Party of Five: the nadir of Western civilization?

The posting of Jennifer Love Hewitt pictures reminds me just how very bad Party of Five was. Jennifer Love Hewitt is terrible in it, but her acting was actually much better than the horrible whining schtick that Scott Wolf attempted each week, or the squinty eyed stuff Neve Campbell would do.

Nicole is my kind of peoples.....Scott Wolf looks like the kind of guy that invites you to the get-together the varsity rowing team is throwing and says WEAAAAAAAK!! and gives you a little charley horse that still kind of hurts when you say No Thanks.....and this would be the first time you've ever met him!

i used to love the way they resolved every fucking crisis before the credits roll...and then after whatserface grew tits and baily sobered up, it just wasn't fun anymore.

Bailey has got to be the most painfully self-righteous (and hilariously hypocritical) television character ever created

it was smart to tart up the youngest girl for the last season.

I've only watched it once or twice. I remember it being very grim and depressing, and friends corroborated that it rarely had a happy moment. But here's the thing .. while I found it boring, like most television, I like the premise a lot better than, say, "Friends." Probably for the same reason that I like the Brady Bunch better than Leave It To Beaver.

I've always wondered whether Neve Campbell was simply incapable of closing her mouth.

This is the true nadir of Western civilization. (nb Link should be avoided in your more PC workplaces)

Adam's link is worse than "Party Of Five". For the first couple of seasons, I liked "Party Of Five". Then again, I had a huge gonzo crush on Neve Campbell at the time. Once she met Griffin and became a screeching harpy with no redeeming qualities, the show lost some of its sparkle.

Dan Perry, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well that link brought back some violent memories of high school.

Ethan: is that coz when people said stuff like that you beat their ass? I hope so.

a screeching harpy with no redeeming qualities

She was channeling Nancy Reagan, then.

It's better than 7th Heaven, which seems to be on about ten times a day here in LA. At least the Party of Five gang didn't have parents.

Arthur, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well, we would try to.

ethan, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sometimes violence is the answer.

Dan Perry, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

tell that to my nose, left eye, and two front teeth.

ethan, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe that should say, "Violence is the answer when you win."

Dan Perry, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hey now they didn't WIN.

ethan, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Violence is only the answer if you get to say, 'You should have seen the other guy!'"

Dan Perry, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i love in fargo when buscemi comes back in after getting shot in the face and says that. actually maybe now i should tell my story that's like that too.

It's better than 7th Heaven...

You fool! Nothing is better than 7th Heaven! It's the creepiest show on television and also the funniest. Yesterday I saw a rerun of the one where Lucy gets her period and the Simon gets a dog (unrelated events, I think)--a classic no doubt. The recent ones are good too, 'cause the kids are old and trying to get married and stave off those sinful natural urges, as well as Ruthie's development into some kind of oracle/font of wisdom spouting inane recycled self-helpisms in a smug manner that would lead to swift and deserved beatings from any other family. Good stuff.

seven years pass...

It figures that I'm the one who started the thread on this show. And yet for all of the haterade I poured on Party of Five upthread I still ended up watching it, so...

Not seen this for years. I used to watch it at the time as an obscenely angsty teen. I doubt it would stand up at all to me now though.
