I just found out that I will be in Boston for a few days next week. Having never been before, can someone recommend some things to do? I'll have a considerable amount of free time to walk around and see the city.

I'll have a considerable amount of free time to walk around and see the city.
then the freedom trail sounds right for you.
visit the u.s.s. constitution. go out to castle island. take a harbor cruise or a go whale watching. visit the new england acquarium. MAKE SURE YOU VISIT THE ISABELLA STEWART GARDNER MUSEUM. the courtyard there is the most beautiful place in boston. go record shopping in cambridge (students are leaving/have left- best time to buy the records they don't want to bring back home). go see the turpentine brothers at the abbey in slumerville on the 23rd. have a picnic on the common. ride the swan boats in the public garden.

Kevin's suggestions are excellent. Then again, so is Elmo's. ;-)
It's actually a really pretty city and following the freedom trail sounds like a good idea for you. Then you can decide what you like and want to go back to see again.

I recommend walking Massachussetts Avenue from the South End through Back Bay across the bridge through Central Square to Harvard Square. Also, eat a buritto at Anna's. If there for lunch I recomend the carnitas, for dinner the stewed chicken (not the grilled chicken). eat one for me.

go to the mfa or the museum of science. see if the bosox are in town and get some scalped tix. go on a duck boat tour. walk along the charles on the mem drive side in cambridge from the b.u. bridge towards the mass. ave bridge, it's the best view of the skyline (apart from route 3 south of the city). go to the arnold arboretum. in addition to mt. auburn cemetary, go to the granary burying ground, it's the final resting spot for many founding fathers and patriots (before the word acquired it's unpleasant aftertaste). see if something is going on at the hatch shell, and if not go to the esplanade anyway.

I'm a huge fan of the North End which is Boston's Little Italy. It's very old with a lot of history and also very cute. Many of the restuarants there are excellent.
