if we haven't already done this thread... what do you prescribe?

my personal recommendations: sugary tea and a wank.

di, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

suicide by drowning.

duane, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Here's my anti-hangover regimen (and no, I'm not some psychotic health-nut):

Antioxidants. These include things like Vitamins A-C-E, pine bark extract, or grape seed extract. A regular antioxidant-rich multivitamin should do the trick. I take the normal recommended dose--(don't overdo, make sure to read labels)--with a glass of water. Then I go out drinking. When I stumble back from the bar, I drink a bit more water. Go to bed. Wake up the next morning with Slowdive or something else sedating on the stereo. Drink tea, read New York Times, leave to office. lather rinse repeat

geeta, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Duane, but I don't want another drink! ;-)

helen, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Beer.

toraneko, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fried egg sandwich, brisk walk (haha i am english), then juice and coffee and pleasant inactivity till lunchtime

actually i have never had a *hangover* hangover, as i only began drinking five yrs ago and am still a virgin peachy teen liver- wise — but i do get fuck-awful air-pressure migraines now and then

mark s, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fried food juice and coffee. Bacon is the miracle cure, not to crispy though, it doesn't work so well.

Ed, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"fried food juice" = my favourite thing evah!

mark s, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Irn-Bru.

powertonevolume, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i found out rather accidentally this morning that rice with a lot of curry sort of works. also chocolate soy milk and watching heavenly creatures on video.

ethan, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So you followed di's reccomendation then?

Andrew L, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alternate hangover cure strategy: Call in sick to work the next day and watch cartoons. Works every time. I also know someone who swears that tequila will get rid of a hangover, but I don't think I'd recommend that one.

geeta, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ew that movie is much too creepy for wank fodder you freak and also as was vigorously discussed before i am not attracted to winslet (well okay sorta)

ethan, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Orgasms good, but only offer temporary relief. Lots of tea and eggZor better, more booze best but that ways lies alcoholism.

RickyT, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

heres a real cure: drink a BIG glass of water before you go to bed.

chaki, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hey i met melanie lynskey once, she was nice.

duane, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sure-fire guarantee: marijuana. they should make it legal on this basis alone.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a nice swim

rainy, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

so duane and rainy agree about this.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah i agree with rainy about pretty much everything now. you know! you've just gotta.

, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There was this one, sick minute when Duane stopped agreeing with me about Destiny's Child, but then he realised.

rainy, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's nice, Rainy.

We bought this HANGOVAH CURE from HEALTH FOOD SHOP on V______s Street. I intended to use it after the ILE Awards, he intended to use it after a somewhat viscious post-rugby drinking session. Needless to say we both forgot to take it having left it behind in the office but upon reading the instructions WHOT A SWIZ! It involves a) drink a pint of water. b) drink a pint of water with some DRIED URBS in it. c) sleep d) repeat a+b. So in other words... DRINK SOME BLUDDY WATER! I feel ripped off outta my 99p.

Sarah, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Milk thistle. It tastes foul, like wet hay smells, but it actually works. I keep a bottle in my desk drawer.

Anna, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alka Seltzer. I keep forgetting in all this hangover cure mythology that there's actually a product designed for it and it actually works.

N., Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
I'm alone in the house, and testing out a new hangpver cure because I don't have the usual imposed list of things to do. I woke up, felt like crap, and took an experimental shot of gin. I hear this works for alcoholics. It didn't quite work for me. It made me very drunk again, instantly. This is not what I wanted! I want to be *not* drunk and also *not* hungover. I guess that's not really possible.

Kenan (kenan), Saturday, 13 November 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Upside: I'm a little giggly.

Kenan (kenan), Saturday, 13 November 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

don't wake up! or don't stop drinking!

lucifer, Sunday, 14 November 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

do you have access to straight oxygen? that's supposed to do the trick in about 15 min.

why woody harrelson tried to sell his oxygen bar as some feel-good health thing for hippie-dippie assholes instead of drunks trying to recover the morning after is exactly why it failed. i'm gonna re-open one next to a greasy mexican diner and have it be open 8am-4pm and get rich!

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Sunday, 14 November 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I imagine straight oxygen'd also be marvy for those of us who have godawful ciggy hangovers. I always feel crap just as much from the whole pack of 30 I smoked in 3 hours straight the night before, as I do the half a cask of wine I've guzzled (nb I very rarely do this anymore, I just cant handle it).

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 14 November 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Any of the ideas on this thread are better than the one I had yesterday morning. Around 6pm, I was seriously thinking I might die. I went and got the phone and put it in bed with me, so I could call 911 if I started, I dunno, bleeding out my eyes.

Kenan (kenan), Sunday, 14 November 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

heres a real cure: drink a BIG glass of water before you go to bed.

OTM - and if not before bed, when you wake up and have the hangover. Even better: substitute Gatorade for the water. If no Gatorade, 50% whatever fruit juice you have and 50% water.

Also, breathe fresh, cool air.

Finally, if you have a friend who's a nurse and can get the equipment, get them to give you a saline IV. That will definitely work.

Fatty fat fat diner breakfast: ie omelettes & hashbrowns, and soda or coffee, and two excedrin. But the WATER advice is best of all. Good luck trying to force puking in bush dranked buddy to down a lot of water, tho.

pappawheelie gets hangovers because he's a vegetarian and can't eat bacon the next morning. that's all there is to it!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 7 July 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

More sleep, I think. If you can just stay unconscious long enough for the crippling nausea to pass, you'll only need a few glasses of water when you wake up and no one's the wiser.

chuck norris-approved EMERGEN-C! it really helps. like every day.

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 7 July 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

1 glass water, 2 tums, 2 advil, sleep for 20-30 more minutes. wake up feeling much better. then drink 1 glass water + emergen-C and some coffee for a boost, and possibly have a piece of toast. continue with water/coffee all day.

tehresa, who will here remain anonymous (tehresa), Friday, 7 July 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

a housemate gave me emergen-c once in college and I HATED the taste of it so much, spent all day trying to get rid of it. I think I'd rather have the taste of last night's scotch and bile on my tounge then the fizzy grossness of emergen-c.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 7 July 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

depends on the flavor! i love the raspberry, but the lemon-lime (or something yellow) is kinda gross!

tehresa, who will here remain anonymous (tehresa), Friday, 7 July 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

sometimes i hold my nose and just shoot the thing

ai lien (kold_krush), Friday, 7 July 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

making yourself wakeup and go back to sleep is u/k!

Machibuse '80 (ex machina), Friday, 7 July 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

being able to sleep as much as possible is by far the best cure. otherwise, a .5mg ativan/xanax/valium will set you straight.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 7 July 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

In addition to water before bed, I recommend some food to go with it, preferably in the carby/fatty area that the breakfast dudes are mentioning. So yeah, get that 4th meal at Taco Bell, or just some breadnbutter.

sounds like an oxygen tank, lots of that "performance" water with potassium ions etc, and l-cysteine is a pretty encompassing remedy.

i actually used to have some cysteine tablets around the house that seemed to ameliorate my mind-crushing hangovers... it was also bundled with like 3000% of your daily intake of various B-vitamins, so that might have helped, too.

i think ive hit on the perfect hangover monkey mix. bottle of wine and 4 pints of guinness and loads of gorgonzola, bed at 1. awoke at 6.30 still pissed and thats always going to be the worst pain all day so took drastic action with a berocca, a lemsip and a sachet of diaorolite in a pint of water and snoozed for another hour. facemelting turkish coffee courtesy of my housemate and cycled 5 miles to work. Its now 11am and i feel absolutely powerful, no sweats, pain, weakness or fear. Plus charity buns on the go with an honesty box (take that Lenny henry)

for a not too bad hangover:
1. water
2. a couple hours lying around not doing much
3. 2-3 mile run
and when i get back from that, i feel pretty much back to normal!

but for a bad hangover, i've experienced no cure but sleeping until it's over.

my husband has these foul-tasting yellow jelly-ish cubes that he makes me eat before going to bed after a night of drinking. i can't remember what they are exactly, but some kind of intense electrolyte replacement, maybe? anyway, they seriously work.

Bacon egg and cheese biscuit from McDonalds does the job for me every time. Actually any bacon sandwich works well. There's been scientific studies on it and it seriously works. Google "bacon sandwich hangover" and see for yourself if you don't believe me.

In my drinking days, I bought GT's Original Kombucha by the case (no, really) and always kept a bottle of pediatric electrolyte on hand for the especially bad days.

It never really made the hangover go away, but it did make the day navigable (as opposed to just alternating between the bed and the bathroom all day).
