Out of those I chose Scarborough cos it combines elements of several of the others. But I would've liked to vote Ilfracombe.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 9 June 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

the ones i would have liked to vote for aren't there either, but i tried to pick the biggest 10, ive been to 6 of them, im not sure which i would vote for yet

696, Saturday, 9 June 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

Whitby is cool.

chap, Saturday, 9 June 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

Gah, I just voted for Brighton by mistake (not that I don't quite like Brighton, but it'll get loads of votes anyway).

chap, Saturday, 9 June 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

Brighton has the Volks Railway going for it, but not much else - it's a shame the Brighton and Rottingdean Seaside Electric Tramroad didn't survive very long, because it was ace - basically, a mobile section of pier.

Whitby has goths, of course, and hot goths are always a bonus. But I went for Scarborough just because, as Noodle said, it's the archetypal one.

Places you didn't list: Cleethorpes (I have to say that even though it's shit, cos I live there nominally) and Hastings (my top choice cos of many childhood holidays. Hastings ranks alongside Scarborough as having everything a seaside town *should* have: beach, tacky arcades, miniature train, boating lake, ruined castle, cliffs, cliff railways (only 2 to Scarborough's 3), and gruesome legends about local smugglers.

(I think Scarborough might be missing the smugglers and boating lake - but Scarborough Castle's past is more gruesome than Hastings Castle's, which kind of makes up for the smugglers)

Forest Pines, Sunday, 10 June 2007 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

Whitby has the best fish and chips.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, Sunday, 10 June 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

No, Cleethorpes and Polperro both have better fish and chip shops.

Forest Pines Mk2, Sunday, 10 June 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

There used to be a pub in Scarborough called The Smugglers I think. (Goths was a reason I marked down Whitby lol)

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 10 June 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

how can goths ever be a positive??

weston-super-mare is one of the grimmest places i've ever set foot in.

lex pretend, Sunday, 10 June 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

Because lots of goths are hot, as stated above.

Clearly the reason Scarborough has little smuggling heritage (compared to Hastings or Cornwall - or Lincolnshire even, New Holland got its name from the amount of contraband gin passing through it) is that they all sat in the pub getting pissed.

Forest Pines Mk2, Sunday, 10 June 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

southport. full of posh scousers and has the cleanest beach in britain. larks!

pisces, Sunday, 10 June 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

There's a road in Whitby that smells of smoked kippers (or at least there was in 1989) and I love it/the memory of it. Scarborough rocks also.

Zoe Espera, Sunday, 10 June 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

im leaning towards whitby, goths or no goths.

but what about morecambe? no boosters for morecambe? i remember liking it, but it was a long time ago

morecambe - jug of tea?

696, Monday, 11 June 2007 08:10 (eighteen years ago)

only been to whitby, scarboro, southend and brighton - the latter wins for numerous reasons that eclipse any cons about the place.

blueski, Monday, 11 June 2007 08:54 (eighteen years ago)

I don't really want to vote for Brighton despite hometown affection, because I don't think it's very good at being a seaside town any more. But I haven't been to any of the others :(

Archel, Monday, 11 June 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

Whitby has jet

C J, Monday, 11 June 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

the gladiator?

Ste, Monday, 11 June 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

No, the Wings track.

C J, Monday, 11 June 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

southend has kit

g-kit, Monday, 11 June 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

Jet

C J, Monday, 11 June 2007 14:13 (eighteen years ago)

The Jet draws the Goffs.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 11 June 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

Probably the most enjoyable weekend I've had traveling was in Whitby. K-classic.

Ms Misery, Monday, 11 June 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

i've only been to brighton on the list there

g-kit, Monday, 11 June 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Archel, i agree. Brighton is really more of a town by the sea than a seaside town these days. It thinks of itself as too alternative to be "traditional". Still beats Newquay and WSM which are the only other ones I'm familiar with from that list.

Uptoeleven, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 14 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

disappointing results

696, Friday, 15 June 2007 06:26 (eighteen years ago)

Wells-next-the-Sea has the best fish and chips.
Cromer is my favourite english seaside town although Lyme Regis is a close second.

Ned Trifle II, Friday, 15 June 2007 06:45 (eighteen years ago)

lol southerners

Noodle Vague, Friday, 15 June 2007 06:46 (eighteen years ago)

that was an xpost

Cromer's nice but slightly Morrissey. Mind, I've only been in March.

Noodle Vague, Friday, 15 June 2007 06:47 (eighteen years ago)

good memories of cromer over here

696, Friday, 15 June 2007 06:57 (eighteen years ago)

very predictable results

blueski, Friday, 15 June 2007 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

Out of those options I've been to Weston-Super-Mare the most :'( Stupid childhood in the West Midlands. It was either there or Tenby. We did go to Newquay once though.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 15 June 2007 10:31 (eighteen years ago)

Another predictable shout for Cromer.

I somehow missed this poll.

30 years ago I would have gone for Blackpool but now I would probably have picked Whitby.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 15 June 2007 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

i thought brighton was rubbish it looked just like southend

g-kit, Friday, 15 June 2007 10:40 (eighteen years ago)

out of the choices available (self xpost).

Never been to Southend so I can't back you up on that.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 15 June 2007 10:49 (eighteen years ago)

I am going to Brighton this weekend. I have no idea what to expect.

aldo, Friday, 15 June 2007 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

rain, I think

Ed, Friday, 15 June 2007 11:22 (eighteen years ago)

Oh joy.

aldo, Friday, 15 June 2007 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

g-kit, Friday, 15 June 2007 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

g-kit, Friday, 15 June 2007 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

Wd lv to come but we are car-less. And lazy.

aldo, Friday, 15 June 2007 11:42 (eighteen years ago)

that's ok i was guessing about the sun but will have A+++++ singstar again anyway

g-kit, Friday, 15 June 2007 11:44 (eighteen years ago)

the view east from the train as you pull into brighton is one of my favourite things about the place (only works if it's sunny tho).

blueski, Friday, 15 June 2007 11:45 (eighteen years ago)

You can see my house from there. No shit, you can. London to Brighton bike ride on Sunday so expect swarms of lycra-clad (not so) lovelies. Not naked though, that was last weekend.

Uptoeleven, Friday, 15 June 2007 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

I went to Dungeness last weekend, it was beautiful, but in no way a town.
