This article, from a Hawaiian newspaper, is funny in many ways.

Quote: "On a recent shopping trip the father of an emo high school student was surprised (and delighted) when his formerly goth son wanted a V-neck sweater, white button-down shirt and fitted jeans. And for Christmas? He asked for a narrow necktie."

That article is so gay...

(BTS and Weezer aren't emo, anyway...)

Isn't Emo Hair meant to be messy?

How helpful! I feel so hip and in the know now.

I like this:

Do you know an emo kid? Intentionally unshowy, these guys often ride bicycles, keep diaries, write poetry and hang out at coffee shops. They prefer art films to Hollywood blockbusters and frequent independent music stores. They are usually shy and introspective.

Hilarious. Replace 'emo' with 'beatnik' and this could have been written fifty years ago.

Do people still actually write poetry?

Emo kids look like they need a kicking.

After reading through it again, I have a new favorite line:

Emo is more like Mr. Rogers.

geeta, Sunday, 24 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i write poetry , take transit , watch art films , prowl obscure rcord stores and wear v neck sweaters with buttondown shirts . am i emo ?

You are 'Tickle-Me-Emo'!

On the basis of this description, Edna W. is so Emo, clique fans.

I like the idea of Hawaiian goths. I hope they haven't all converted to emo like the son of the surprised (and delighted) father mentioned above.

fritz, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Said father will get much disappointment when he realizes his son is still listening to "that whiny garbage that you can't understand the words to. Why can't he like real music?"

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, I'm only a chic geek.

suzy, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there a rockist chic look then?

Graham, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rat Pack.

suzy, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Frighteningly, N. is right re: the EW/EMO style crossover - only the return of THE QUIFF now stands between me and listening to Modest Mouse.

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

God, the kid in this article looks so UPSET. Is that part of the emo look?

Mandee, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and he's got lousy posture.

mitch, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But it notes that he's a staffer who's been recruited to model, so either (a) he is not happy about that, or (b) he's trying to capture his perception of what emo kids are like, in which case it becomes a big funny diss on emo.

The word "emo" is like kudzu or Australian rabbits or something: if we're already at the point where Built to Spill are "emo" (in Hawaii, anyway), I fully expect Britney Spears to get the tag sometime soon. Or -- oh dear -- it could end up following the great "alternative" to "indie" transition of the early nineties with an "indie" to "emo" transition. This would be sad as hell.
