"Sir Ian" is a fairly bonkers reason to try and "get something out of it" — he is hamming like fury I'm afraid... (though there *is* a good Gods & Monsters link: all Tolkien's teen chums were killed in WW1, and he was invalided out and survived)

Actually, Peter Jackson (director) said that he wanted Sir Ian for the part, due to his stature and Shakespearean-caliber of training: "Tolkien's words are high [minded], and not easy to say, without sounding cheesy...."
It's well worth the cash to see, but pay attention to _all_ the characters, not just him.
