I thought this one was going to be really hard but then I looked very closely at the options and I voted with my heart.

nickalicious, Thursday, 14 June 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

I remember really enjoying Mosquito Coast, it's like for the requisite hollywood actor trope of playing someone mentally challenged, Ford chose to play a manipulative genius bipolar aspie adventurer.

ICE IS CIVILIZATION.

Dude walked into my gallery five minutes ago. I looked up from browsing the boards and he's looking at a painting two feet from the front door. So I give him a half-assed wave and the kind of confused look I'm sure he gets all the time and he shoots me back that gruff "hey" he always gives in the movies. He took off right after that.

I must be brain-dead, because there was some basic stuff I didn't get in the quite pointless Random Hearts. Why is Ford so obsessed with knowing every last detail about his wife? What happened with Bonnie Hunt near the end? What is the Dennis Haysbert story about? I've only seen a few Harrison Ford films past Apocalypse Now. But enough to know that Harrison Ford Looking Grim is a genre I should avoid.

It's short, but two choice quotes:

Between Ender's Game and the Hunger Games franchise, why do you think we're so entertained by kids killing one another?
[long pause] Beats the shit out of me. Ender's Game is a very different kind of movie and a very different kind of warfare.

Is there a trick to making seemingly ridiculous dialogue like “When the aliens first invaded...” work?
Yeah. That's my job. That's why I get paid.

one year passes...

Was thinking about Harrison Ford when we were watching "The Last Crusade." The guy (especially for his first 20 years of work) was handsome, charismatic, had great comic timing, great chemistry with his actors, solid dramatic acting chops, could play charming really well, was a box office draw, and yet with very few exceptions (like the misbegotten Sabrina remake or maybe Six Days, Seven Nights, both flops) was never really cast in traditional romantic leading man roles. Just action roles or loner-dramas like in Witness, Mosquito Coast, Blade Runner, Presumed Innocent, et al. That seems unusual, doesn't it?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 14 July 2016 12:24 (nine years ago)

Working Girl is pretty trad leading man, but I do agree that post-Raiders til that point he picks some pretty unusual projects. After Working Girl, it's mostly actioneers or thrillers and he's pretty much type-cast as Harrison Ford.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 July 2016 12:40 (nine years ago)

I think there's something about his habitus that makes him better suited for drama or action than for romance. Some kind of undecidedness, a perpetual sense of ennui that would make it somehow feel disappointing for the climax to be him settling down. I mean, even in Frantic, where he (SPOILERS!) ultimately ends up with the "safe" choice, his wife, and the person representing the dangerous life he'd become mixed with, the French woman, gets killed, the ending feels somehow wrong... Like he should've chosen the other woman and the other life, and killing her is just a convenient way to avert him facing that choice.

Though of course this reading is probably informed by all those loner-dramas, and in an alternate universe where he chose a more romantic career I might be feeling differently.

Tuomas, Thursday, 14 July 2016 12:45 (nine years ago)

Yeah I think he could have done both (Cary Grant seems like he's sort of the template here, although Ford made some way odder choices).

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 July 2016 12:48 (nine years ago)

After Working Girl, it's mostly actioneers or thrillers and he's pretty much type-cast as Harrison Ford.

My Harrison Ford theory is that he tried hard up till Mosquito Coast, but when he didn't win anything for that, he just gave up.

trishyb, Thursday, 14 July 2016 14:17 (nine years ago)

he should have retired after the fugitive tbh

brexit through the rift shock (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 14 July 2016 14:20 (nine years ago)
