JIMMY MOD THE SACK MASTER (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Sunday, 21 November 2010 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

Would be more fun to hang out with than Pacino, IMO. Maybe James Caan would be rad too.

ralph NAGLer (admrl), Sunday, 21 November 2010 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

and of course

ralph NAGLer (admrl), Sunday, 21 November 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

Speaking of not condoning certain practices, Caan recently completed “Middle Men,” his second film with Luke Wilson – and although he has a “good relationship” with the younger actor, Wilson does do one thing that rubs him up the wrong way.
“Luke is a good guy. I just don't like him texting me. I told him call me, G** damn it, don't text me. When he texts me, I never answer,” Caan added with a smile.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 22:16 (fifteen years ago)

I liked it. Sorta feels like a Coen Bros joint, maybe just bc it's a period piece with a bit of black comedy. Pretty paint by numbers but Duvall & Murray are worth it just to watch them do their thing.

tomorrow is seriously one of duvall's finest performances ... readily available from Netflix and tender mercies fans will probably love it (like that one, tomorrow was written by Horton Foote). the cinematography and mise-en-scene is pretty much filmmaking Ground Zero, but it fits the story well ... and, to repeat myself, it isn't overstating things to call Duvall's performance exquisite.

http://i43.tower.com/images/mm107558365/tomorrow-robert-duvall-vhs-cover-art.jpg

it was recommended to me by an awesome video store clerk back when i was in college ... and it's the kind of film i'd show someone to gauge how much of a film nerd they really are.

He's a sputtering Alabama daddy with a car-accident obsession in the new (well, it's taken 18 months to come out) Billy Bob Thornton movie. It's a wandering mess, but he's still commanding (tho the critic who says he's looking more like an iguana is right).

The Judge was quite an ordeal. Terrible performance from Downey (always want to pin half the blame on the writers for conceiving such a character); Duvall has a few good moments, but it'd rank way down there on the list above.

Some credit to Tarantino's book for getting me to watch The Outfit--generic on the surface, but good performances by everyone, and (intentionally according to Tarantino, which I assumed anyway) a supporting cast assembled as a tribute to classic noir: Robert Ryan, Jane Greer, Marie Winsor, Elisha Cook Jr., Timothy Carey. Superior to Peckinpah's The Getaway, I'd say, though not as good as Straight Time in the recidivist-thief genre.

clemenza, Tuesday, 13 December 2022 21:08 (three years ago)

Not sure why I started with "some"--all credit to the book.
