Did anyone here ever have a pager? Why page when you can text? What are the merits?

They predate mobile phones and texting and were more reliable at the time the first mobile phones appeared (and even now, during busy moments mobile networks can be unavailable). Also, in hospitals where mobile phone signals can disrupt sensitive (heart support) machines, pagers are vv useful.

I think they've mostly disappeared from regular civilian use, only emergency personnel still use them. (and people who work for mobile phone networks that wouldn't be reachable when their network had a problem to tell them their network had a problem)

I had a pager watch, in the days before mobile phones. It could only do numbers, fucking pointless.

And yes, I had two once. Computer network trouble was expected and they were next to my bed all night but they didn't beep, luckily. :-)

Some of our server guys still use pagers, I've had to call the pager service once or twice and talk to sleepy people who more than likely got my message wrong.

I'd like to be a pager person.

My dad used to have a pager that instead of numbers, would "broadcast" a fifteen-second message recorded by the caller. Usually the message was along the lines of "Hey call me at 433-1037, I need to talk to you". However, we all discovered that you could hold one of the buttons down and hear everybody's recorded messages as they were sent.

How else would you know when your Cheesecake Factory table is ready?

Like others have said, I had a pager pre-cell phones.

Drug dealers still like them.
