I don't know.

N., Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not especially.

Apparantly in these situations the thing to do is smile and ask the person why they want to know. I dunno bout that though I got it in one of those lotus totus forward things. I mean has any one tried this sucessfully and wouldn't you look like a bit of a twat if the person gave a perfectly good answer and then you had to 'fess up and say that you didn't know?

nic, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, never.

Anna, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No - but on the other hand bullshitting is generally fun and harmless. There's nothing wrong with not correcting people who THINK you know more than you do.

Tom, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am afraid to admitting I KNOW about things as then ppl try to make you DO things. Oy vey.

Sarah, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not really an issue: i DO know things

mark s, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But, most important thing I learnt from writing essays is...no right or wrong or answer, as long as you justify your answer. Though, I guess this can't be applied to facts.

Rockist.

N., Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Generally not but I do bullshit all the time for pleasure. The difficult cases are when you kinda think you know something (obscure facts) and have no way of backing it up or even knbow where you got it from. STuff like that can kybosh me all the time.

I bluff my way through almost everything in life.

Ally C, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know everything, but I also don't like seeming to be a know-all. So I usually let people spout nonsense without interrupting to say things like "Actually, Germany *lost* the Second World War".

I don't mind admitting I don't know things, because then people might tell me those things. And then I would know them! winner.

DV, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not afraid. but then it helps if, like me, you know everything.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have ways of getting around admitting not to know things, but they're trade secrets. I find that fessing up to not knowing something every so often also helps.

suzy we have noticed this :)

katie, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

;-p to you too Grocott...

suzy, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is a point of contention with me. I have come perilously close to blows with people who insist that I refuse to admit that I don't know everything. A lot of this is down to conversational style, though; if someone references something I don't know about and my immediate understanding of said thing isn't necessary for me to understand what they're saying, I'll usually say, "Okay," and allow the person to finish their story. This apparently makes some people think that I think I know everything. (NOTE: The previous example is a gross oversimplification, but captures the gist of the situation.)

i am starting to worry that dan and me will turn out to be the same person.

ALANEDA: The three headed monster!

N., Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Err... ALANEDAN

N., Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wasn't he in M*A*S*H?

Andrew L, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was there, yes. We were there. We are the Alpha and the Omega, we are the Holy Trinity.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoops! I meant: I bluff my way through almost everything in life.

Yes! Me too. I'm lying right now, actually.

Mandee, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if i don't know something, i will ask. i don't know how to lie so i can't bluff my way through things.

di, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think "I don't have a bloody clue" is one of the most common things to come out of my mouth. So, no, not afraid.

electric sound of jim, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what Sarah said.

rainy, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm guilty of every vice: imperiously demanding that people define their terms, pretending not to understand something to flatter the other person, pretending to understand just for the pleasure of guessing and solving a puzzle, pretending to understand in order to be ingratiating, pretending to understand in order to seem equal or superior

maryann, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Once my nana's friend left a message for her on the phone and you have to dial up all these numbers to get the message and I knew she wouldn't get it if I tried to explain it to her. So I dialled up the message for her and then held the phone out to her and said, 'Nana, listen to this message for you.' Then she started listening and saying, 'hello ... hold on, slow down ... ' and then she got really upset and said to me, 'She hung up on me!' And I was deliberating quickly over what to tell her and I just couldn't think how to begin, and just comiserated with her.

Mind you, Duane talks to phone messages - for effect! He says it's just for effect, but sometimes he talks to them when he thinks there's nobody around. He says 'hurry up, get on with it' and gesticulates, and says 'oh yeah, whatever.'
