I'll start.

http://www.dreamboatrecords.co.uk/images/catalogue/bird/bird-500.jpg

The image is a crop taken from a botanical engraving (I have no drawing talent). I had them letterpressed in Pantone 350U on these great chipboard sleeves by Stumptown in Portland, who were a pleasure to work with.

nathalie, Friday, 15 June 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

That looks awesome Caek!

Nath, trumps thread.

I would show my latest fabric creation but it's sister is meant for an ILx0r so I don't want to spoil the suprise.

Ms Misery, Friday, 15 June 2007 13:00 (eighteen years ago)

OMG CUET

(and wicked, caek!)

G00blar, Friday, 15 June 2007 13:02 (eighteen years ago)

I lose! : )

caek, Friday, 15 June 2007 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

hahahaha the baby pic trumps everything! ILX is just like America's Funniest Videos.

i love her no-nonsense look.

latebloomer, Friday, 15 June 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

OK, I know that DDBs are not as cuet as babies, but this is what I have been working on most recently:

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/206/493469805_c9c249741c.jpg

Have been asked to do album artwork and tour posters for other bands off the back of it, so I'm quite pleased.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 15 June 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

(just to say i appreciate the attempt at a thread with content amongst all these polls. unfortunately i have nothing to add - working 7 days a week does tend to sap my (already limited) creativity)

nat's cheating - that was a joint effort 8)

koogs, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)

Is that pen and ink or Photoshop, Kate? I like it!

caek, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

Pen and ink, scanned into photoshop. I did it very drunk in the back of a pub, while Teh Early Yares were playing - am trying to set up doing a proper version but have been out of drawing order with my wrist, and we don't seem to be able to set up a sitting becuase they are flaeky.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

Does this count? maybe. not really.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1007/541495689_f6a37236f0.jpg

The only real creative stuff I've been doing lately is writing but that's not really showable. And php/MySQL coding. I've been fobbing off all of my graphic work to the intern lately.

Ms Misery, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

I designed and did the photography for this:

treefell, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

Ooh, I like the colours of the spinny fairground wheel thingy!

Masonic Boom, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

Kaet and Cake: your drawings/engravings are great!

StanM, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

Ophelia is great too of course, Nathalie, but you didn't actually, like, design her, or did you?

StanM, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

xxpost It's the Big Wheel at the Links Market (an annual event in my hometown where the esplanade gets taken over by a fairground for a weekend in April). It looks much better on the album cover after all the post-processing because in real life it looks a bit shabby.

treefell, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

Is the Links Market still going? Blimey. Most of the other Fife coast fairs have dwindled away to nothing.

aldo, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

Kate, your pen and ink would look great as a woodcut. Probably not if you carved it with with a busted wrist though.

I love the green/brown tiles. Art+Design-y home decor is definitely on topic.

And the colours on that ferris wheel _are_ pretty.

caek, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

treefell, it's a great image and a great font, but the placement of the word "saint" really bothers me. it just seems to be hanging out by itself too much....a little to the right and a litte closer to 'jude', maybe? i dunno, but gosh, it's really bothering me.

the table is the table, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

xpost
It's just the way it worked out. I was trying to put more life into the font so I printed out each word onto a separate piece of paper, photographed it and imported it into photoshop for post processing.
Each word ended up being off horizontal and out of scale with the others.
So when I first put them together on the image they pretty much came out looking like that against each other. I liked it - the words were independent and part of the whole at the same time and it gave the logo a unique look.
I suppose the 'saint' could be a bit distracting, but I'm so used to it now that I can't imagine it any other way.

treefell, Friday, 15 June 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and yeah, the Links Market is still going strong. God knows why...

tiny photos too!

it's a 30's building so we wanted to give it a kind of cruise liner/ art deco feel without doing a pastiche.

jed_, Friday, 15 June 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

Great banquette tufting, jed!

I DIED, Friday, 15 June 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

thanks I DIED, i like yours.

the banquet is actually a bit of a disappointment to me - the buttoning should be deeper but hey, you get what you can afford. also i'm quite pleased that there are actually more seats than there were originally but the place looked absolutely full of chairs before.

jed_, Friday, 15 June 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

Love the flier, Abbott.

StanM, Friday, 15 June 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

Abbott, that flier is awesome. Nice tits!

I DIED, where is your restaurant? Does it exist yet?

caek, Friday, 15 June 2007 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

Those restaurants are both Washington DC area, one's in permitting right now and the other's in construction. I don't really care for either of those project phases.

six months pass...

(Have to admit that last one, the levels were auto corrected and colours have gone ever so slightly more 'colourful', but it's not far off)

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:10 (eleven years ago)

Yowza! Was that last one painted (or initially sketched) on location?

ledge, Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:13 (eleven years ago)

It's painted from a photo I found online, unfortunately.

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:15 (eleven years ago)

Never mind! Drawing or painting from life is great if you get the chance but nothing wrong with using photos.

ledge, Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:18 (eleven years ago)

How did the oil painting go?

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:19 (eleven years ago)

Ah the course two years ago? Went ok but stalled afterwards, doing another portrait course now and getting into it more, hopefully will keep it up after the course finishes. Here's my piece from the last session:

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7473/15522143749_5005786d2c_b.jpg

And a couple of watercolour sketches of Venice, one on location and one from a photo after I got back. More illustrative, I didn't pluck up the courage to throw away the pen and just rely on tone & colour.

wonderful, keep it up for sure.

Love watercolours + black pen. What kind of pen have you used there?

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:31 (eleven years ago)

just an unfancy hard tip liner pen. need to get a dip pen for more exciting & energetic lines.

ledge, Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:35 (eleven years ago)

I was hit with redundancy a couple of months ago, so I decided to use the opportunity to get serious with painting. Enjoying all the experimenting and finding my style but struggling with sources.

One thing I realised after rifling through my truck load of photographs for sources is, as you mentioned, how much better it is to paint from live. Also it made me understand the importance of taking a decent photo (looking at composition especially) if it's going to be used for painting. Literally had nothing to go on.

The painting above of the colourful buildings on the coast is the first one I've sold.

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:45 (eleven years ago)

I only ever tried oil painting once, I was fairly young and just recall someone had given me some unwanted oil paints and tools. Had no idea and just got them out and started to paint. Yeah got messy very quickly. Scared me off.

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:52 (eleven years ago)

Good on you for making a go of the painting, I foolishing and/or courageously chucked it all in last year (!) to try and become an illustrator, success and clients have not been beating a path to my door yet. I struggle to inspire and motivate myself tbh, have not done as much work off my own bat as I could have. But hey this is ilxor gallery not ilxor artists' therapy. If I may be forgiven the self promotion, I have a portfolio site at http://tom.ledger.name/

Thanks guys, really appreciate the feedback. Trying to do more of the star wars droid things, something that people recognise. And generally looking at droids and spaceships from other famous movies/tv shows.

I'm dying to do a painting of the red dwarf ship, hard to find a decent image that has the detail though.

Great stuff, Ste. Here's the final portrait from my class, she looks a bit too mean, hair is too flat, etc etc. Definitely want to get more impressionistic in future.

bizarro gazzara, Thursday, 18 December 2014 16:18 (eleven years ago)

I've watched some fascinating interviews with Simon, where he talks about how when he paints it's almost subconscious, and that if he comes out of that trance then the lines he's drawing just lose their power.

Totally on board with that.

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 18 December 2014 16:33 (eleven years ago)

Hey Ledge, did you ever get that dip pen you mentioned? Been practising with one myself this week.

A little bit scratchy, probably a cheap nib, but really impressed with the type of natural line it produces. Also wanted to use better ink, not keen on those design pen inks (always say their waterproof but hmm not sure) and my fountain pen (with converter-cartridge) just struggled to get the ink flowing and always clogged up.
