how many of those "sick days" were for real sickness?

devoted employee?

Zeno, Sunday, 17 June 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

Not especially, I'll just feel guilty all day if I try something like that.

same - didn't use one sick day, and the only day I took off was when I realized my wife had taken my car keys to the Bronx and I had neither spare keys nor adequate public transit options to get me where I needed to go.

It's just more of a pain in the ass to miss work than to go.

Super Cub, Sunday, 17 June 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

yup

I don't even know what "sick days" are anymore. I just work toward existing press deadlines and slack off or pick up the pace accordingly. I had to work through some gastric distress last week, but there are plenty of times when I hit the couch even though I feel fine.

I've only ever taken 1 sick day because of actually being sick. The rest is to extend vacations, make a gig, or recover/sleep the next day.

Jordan, Sunday, 17 June 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

OK after reading all these replies I am so not answering this.

The rest is to extend vacations, make a gig, or recover/sleep the next day.

I don't understand how people get away with this - isn't it obvious that you don't just happen to get sick the day before/after you go on vacation?!

The working world "owes" me at least 60 sick days over the past few years, because I've always come in if I could. Starting this year I started to call in sick occasionally, just because. I think of it as "mental health" and don't feel bad about it at all.

Uh, honest to goodness sick? I always feel guilty for staying home with a migraine cause I know my mom wouldn't. (She once had a migraine attack for a couple of weeks, she still continued to run the shop anyway. Heck, when she had cancer she still opened the shop.) But how many times have I stayed home? Hmm, probably quite a few. Maybe about a week in total? It's kinda hard to tell cause I don't have to keep track - I run the shop now and if I stay home then there's still my husband who takes care of it - and... well, I have a crap memory. But staying home being fine and saying to the boss I'm sick? Uh, kinda hard to do since I'm *sort of* my own boss. (My parents still own the shop but I don't really have to let them know as they are doing their business in Japan.)

nathalie, Monday, 18 June 2007 07:35 (eighteen years ago)

Also, during spring and summer I work (or rather am in the shop) seven days a week. So, I'm ahead of most people anyway. ;-)

Does being hungover count as being ill?

Hello Sunshine, Monday, 18 June 2007 08:10 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

Damn. Home today and tomorrow, gastroenteritis. Slept on the couch since it's closer to the toilet, had to stay on my couch all day, wonder where it all comes from. (TMI, sorry)

Anyway, I hate staying home from work for illness, even now it's really necessary. :-/

I suffer from depression so although I might come up with a lie of some other ailment I'm 99% of the time sick. (e.g. not going to beach after calling in sick)

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

four months pass...

C/D: Calling in sick to work while not actually sick, then receiving good feedback from your boss on work you did last week?

otrbjk93y, Monday, 10 December 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

ha he knows you're lying, it's a guilt thing. i tend to call in sick a few days a year with things like cold or flu, then feel guilty because i could have gone to work if i'd really wanted.
