marmotwolof, Monday, 18 June 2007 05:36 (eighteen years ago)

seriously though is this the best am talk show or what? does anything come close?

marmotwolof, Monday, 18 June 2007 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

I remember listening to talk radio at night as a kid in the 80s... it was like financial advice & Sally Jesse Rafael.
Had I heard David Icke talking about Al Gore drinking blood at the behest of his reptilian masters I would have lost my shit.

Sparkle Motion, Monday, 18 June 2007 05:48 (eighteen years ago)

also the only show on radio or TV to have georgio moroder as its theme song.

gr8080, Monday, 18 June 2007 06:26 (eighteen years ago)

Made liberal use of "Baker Street" as well.

Sparkle Motion, Monday, 18 June 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

I miss Stan Major and his use of "Ride Like the Wind" as his intro.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

Was known to break out Classical Gas from time to time.

ART BELL

George is okay but he ain't no Art.

This used to come in real good in the podunk town I lived in 5 years ago, but it doesn't come in here in Denver at all. So sad :(

homosexual II, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

does anyone subscribe to the streamlink on the website? i am thinking about it.. but only if they cut out the commercials.

homosexual II, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

i was listening on the clock radio the night he went off the air due to vague threats made against his family. dead air. i got up the next day and wondered if i'd dreamed it.

also, who was the time traveler he communicated with? didn't the guy figure out a way to communicate with art via fax or something? and didn't art stop receiving messages from him at some point and feared he'd been killed whilst hanging around in civil war times? i don't think this is mentioned on wiki.

also, art bell v. jeff rense! lotsa entertainment during late night driving in the mid-90s.

andrew m., Monday, 18 June 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

I started listening to this earlier in the year after discovering that XM carries it, then I found the local station. It can be soothing at night, but i don't like it as much when people start talking about politics, cuz that's usually when the real xenophobia and complete cluelessness shows up.

kingfish, Monday, 18 June 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

great show, except i wish my mom wouldn't listen to it all the time, she has enough anxiety to begin with.

I really like the 3rd stringer host, can't remember his name but he's been on a few times in the past couple of months.
I am tiring of George "MR NICE" Noory.

wanko ergo sum, Monday, 18 June 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

HOLEEE SHIT ITS A SIGN

i started this thread on Art's birthday w/o even knowing it.

gr8080, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, the politics talk is really dull.

a few years ago during one summer i was really, really into paranormal/conspiracy theory crap. it was during the whole planet x approaching thing in may of 2003. i would read zetatalk message boards and www.godlikeproductions.com and it was soo life-consuming.

i miss those days!

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

Like I've noted elsewhere, Art has a cameo in the upcoming Lindsey Lohan film I KNOW WHO KILLED ME.

Art's book The Art of Talk(ing?) is pretty great.

I respect both of their abilities to successfully truncate the ramblings of the rambliest ramblers ever to know how to use a telephone. WILDCARD LINE BITCHES!

one month passes...

TONIGHT! OUIJA BOARD SHOW! GN has been playing this up for a couple of months now. I'm not sure how host playing Ouija translates to good radio but Noory won't let us down, he's too nice for that!

wanko ergo sum, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

haha, all the callers are seriously freaked out about this, too.

kingfish, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

Oh man, I thought LAST Wednesday was going to be ouija board night. He'd been talking to a Catholic exorcist last Monday & was all advising George not to do it, and so of course were the callers. "George no I'll get possessed through the radio!" When it did not come last Wednesday I thought he copped out. But no! Thank you Coast to Cooast.

Abbott, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

I just hope it's played straight. C2C characters and bits tend to lose me.

wanko ergo sum, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

i played with a ouija board once and my microwave exploded! no joke!

chaki, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

This is your final reminder.

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 26 July 2007 01:07 (eighteen years ago)

now he's just dicking around. GET TO IT, dammit!

kingfish, Thursday, 26 July 2007 05:44 (eighteen years ago)

so i only heard the last 1.5 hours... did he change his mind mid-program?

gr8080, Thursday, 26 July 2007 08:51 (eighteen years ago)

He didn't do it after all. Open lines were pretty great, though - best caller was either the psychic who got attacked by a water bug (?) while the show was going on and had to do a sage ritual to cleanse the evil spirits or a guy with an incomprehensibly thick upstate NY accent complaining about the cop-out, only to be rebuffed by the resident Ouija expert: "If you've spent 46 years of your life studying the occult, then you might know more about this than I know...Ouija is NOT a game!"

govern yourself accordingly, Thursday, 26 July 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

if that guy was a hilight, i'm glad i didnt listen to the whole show.

gr8080, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

Not that reason and consistency are hallmarks of C2C or anything, but George was kinda contradicting himself by admitting that he didn't think the Ouija board had special powers and then deciding not to do the experiment "out of respect for the Ouija" or something along those lines. IIRC these were among the reasons he gave for not wanting to disturb various continua:

- Somebody's mother dying earlier that day
- His own near-death experience seven years ago
- People getting trapped in the St. Louis arch
- The earthquake off Indonesia
- Not wanting to get blamed for opening up a time portal/letting demons loose in the world (cf. Art Bell and Heaven's Gate)

Definitely a little bit of a bummer.

govern yourself accordingly, Thursday, 26 July 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

That is amazing that a Ouija board could be a scapegoat for any of those things.

Abbott, Thursday, 26 July 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

True, and yet, not that surprising. Belief in magic is strong enough in america that some people hold book burnings of Harry Potter.

kingfish, Thursday, 26 July 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

waiiiiit what? art bell ---> heaven's gate?

Oh Christ, tonight's 1st topic is Obama's stimulus plan, and the first caller I heard had to mention BOTH immigration AND not paying your income tax as a form of protest.

Can they get back to the lizard people who are openly supporting Franken's election to Senate now?

The Secret & Shocking Underground World of Streetwalking Gummi Bears (kingfish), Friday, 9 January 2009 06:50 (seventeen years ago)

Art Bell was on New Years Eve and had nothing but good to say about Obama.

Does Seacrane (C-crane?) radio still advertise on this show? Their LED lightbulbs and handcrank radios seemed unspeakably elegant to my sleep-craving brain. I never bothered to look at the actual radios or lightbulbs lest my image be spoiled. No one show me. I am so out of touch with the ads on this show – used to have them all memorized. My current state is probably more intellectually healthy.

offee is for losers only, do you not c? (Abbbottt), Thursday, 28 April 2011 03:48 (fourteen years ago)

I quit listening to this show after it turning into right wing nighttime talk radio and was only like .5º away from being Glenn Beck show.

RIP Art. A legend.

Let me say his greatest and possibly only grave failing was giving the reins to the colorless, preternaturally dull Noory.
