Potential TS: It's 2009, Leno is gone (praise the Lord!) and Letterman is retiring...Conan is on NBC and Jon Stewart is on CBS. Who do you watch and who gets better ratings?

I'll stick with Conan, but I might switch to Stewart if Conan's a rerun, which I currently don't do. I'd think that Conan will win in the same way that Leno currently beats Letterman in the ratings game. Both Conan and Leno have relatively "populist" (see: non-cynical) personalities for late night talk show hosts and Conan should keep that demographic watching. The fact Stewart has been in favor with college students the past view years is countered by Conan's own following amongst them.

What say you?

chaki, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 06:40 (eighteen years ago)

gr8080, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 06:41 (eighteen years ago)

im going to put this shit on record right now and all yall can quote me on it later: conan will never host the tonight show. something will happen.

jergïns, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 06:45 (eighteen years ago)

but yeah john stewart srsly to answer

jergïns, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 06:46 (eighteen years ago)

Nothing concrete, just speculation. It was reported today that NBC met with Stewart to just engage in light, light talk about the potential for future projects together. The article explored the possibility of Stewart doing the Tonight Show instead of Conan and this got me thinking about a possible Stewart v.s. Conan FIGHT!

exactly while i'll be watching stewart. conan's gotten pretty shitty over recent years and his bits are stale as hell - i only find him really entertaining when he's forced to interact with the public and improvise. but i'd rather stewart stay with the daily show, honestly.

i thought conan already had that deal sealed?

gr8080, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 08:57 (eighteen years ago)

I admire Conan, but the show has seldom made me laugh out loud since Richter left. Not that I've watched regularly.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

gr, deals can always be unsealed.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

stewart on late-night network chat show would probably be a disaster. stewart is one of our sharper comic minds, but the real genius of the daily show is the format and the writing the format encourages. you could stick quite a few hosts into the daily show format and still have it be good. stewart, to my mind, doesn't have the the cornball enthusiasm required of a network late-nite show.

uh, what? 'non-cynical', perhaps, but Conan is not in any way the 'regular guy' Leno is, and I wouldn't rule out his taking Dave's place.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

what the fuck is this thread

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

I thought Stewart was the best Oscars host in 20 years, wtf. (The ratings for that show aren't relevant -- that was the year 'no one' had seen the nominees, right?)

I told a friend who worked in TV for years that Conan was already signed to take over Tonight, and he was flabbergasted. "That'll be a disaster. That guy tries too hard." It's true, he makes comedy look like heavy lifting (which it is, but that's a secret).

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

Honestly, I got bored with The Daily Show after a few years of Stewart-love. I occasionally watch The Colbert Report, mostly because he's so great at keeping the character and it feeds the cynicism-from-all-sides I thrive on. I kind of look forward to a time in my life when I'll look forward to and regularly watch late night tv again :/

Ferguson was a bouncer at Save the Robots?!

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

Actually Stewart has been meeting with NBC execs. There's rumors he may move to Late Night and Leno will either stay on Tonight (wtf) or Conan will move to Tonight.

jessie monster, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

write in: someone needs to murder Carson Daily.

bnw, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)
