They took our actual watercooler away today - I just hope they don't take the coffeemachine or I will die!

I was listening to "Cool in the Pool" when I was a lad and my brother came in and said, "He sounds just like Kenny Everett" and totally 'harshed my buzz'... because he did sound like Kenny Everett. I've never been able to hear a Holger Czukay album in the same way since.
― Tom D., Tuesday, 19 June 2007 10:04 (eighteen years ago)
I guess I'm lucky since I don't actually know who Kenny Everett is. So my buzz cannot be harshed.
― Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 10:05 (eighteen years ago)
The similarity is uncanny

Yet another reason not to go to The Wedding, besides my crippling fear of flying.

Oh! I nearly forgot. I have agreed to go bike shopping with Emsk the weekend after I get paid.
They had a Tour De France themed bike festival on the Common on Saturday, with stunt bikers and French clowns on stilts. It was highly entertaining. I got a Tour De France souvenier pen.
Oh, and I found out I can get bike lessons through Lambeth Council. Hurrah!

They do for entry to Universal/Disney, though.

Ed has a beard. TISSP! has a beard! Lots of people here have beards.
It's just rather anatomically impossible for me to grow a beard. I know that most people rather forget I'm a girl, but uh... I'd have to take hormone supplements to get one!
sorry, I can't d/l anything, the sys admins are on to me and watching my d/l today.

Mr Archel has a lovely beard.
Also I just saw one of my colleagues for the first time in six months and his beard has become positively Darwinesque in the interim, it's fantastic.
I used to be anti-beard but now I am definitely pro. Possibly because I'm getting OLD.
― Archel, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)
as in facial hair or what? :-)
― nathalie, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 12:41 (eighteen years ago)
...and now it's time for the post-lunch slump. :-(
Sudden burst of loneliness this morning, which went away when I got to work and got on the interweb, but now that's worn off and it's back. I suppose I'm just so un-used to having anyone around my flat. That it was really really great to have all these people round and lots of socialising and fun. and now it's kind of heightened the sense of loneliness that I feel all the time in everyday life.
I know it's sooo tedious to go "ooh, I'm so lonely" all the time and even more pathetic than *being* lonely so I've been trying not to do it. But it's getting to me at the moment. :-(
― Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 12:44 (eighteen years ago)
Yes, work has been slow around here for a while, which means I exhaust the internet quickly and start to think, "christ what else is there." idle hands make the devil's work.
― mitya, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 12:46 (eighteen years ago)
I thought you liked living on your own. I suppose it's nice to have visitors but I bet you're glad they all go home and aren't there all the time.

It's like the post-party blues. (Reason to get drunk - so you're too hungover to get depressed afterward.)
― mitya, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 12:48 (eighteen years ago)
I've been spending a *lot* of time around couples recently.
And though they're nice couples, and I'm happy for them, and totally "awwww" about them, it does heighten my own sense of lonelines.
― Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 12:49 (eighteen years ago)
I have the new TSDOLE album at home but I've been too distracted to listen to it.
― Ed, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 10:02 (eighteen years ago)
TSDOLE are playing on Thursday I think. Someone is opening for them who I'm supposed to pay attention, too. At the Metro? There's a million good shows on Thursday - Marnie Stern at Bardens, Chrome Hoof at the 100 Club.
I probably won't end up going to any of them. I seem to have a hard time enjoying things at the moment. It's the depression, I know it. Even when something is really beautiful, it just makes me feel alone and sad.
I should get some coffee.
― Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 10:10 (eighteen years ago)
...OK, if there's gonna be no one around here today, then I'm just going to take my depression off the interweb. It isn't very good for me.

The search for the perfect carrot cake continues. Today - Salad Factory - "Kate's Cakes" Carrot and Orange.
Quite thick-tasting. Nicey grainy quality, and I can feel the carrots in my teeth. Just on the right side of the dry/moist divide. But icing TOO SWEET and way too orangey.
They have two different varieties of carrot cakes, so I'll try the other one tomorrow. It is the "carrot loaf" which claims to have hints of spices, so despite not having icing, it might be nicer.
― Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 13:10 (eighteen years ago)
have you investigated Konditor and Cook yet? They have many many good cakes including a very very good chocolate and raspberry tart.
― Ed, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)
Where is Conditor and Cook?
So far Kate's Cakes is a front runner - and not just for the name. The texture is so lovely. On reading the ingredients, I realised it was not just the carrot that was nice and crunchewy but also ground up orange zest. Lovely. If it were a bit more cinnamonny and the icing less sweet and more cream cheesey, it would be perfect.

Bottom of Grays inn rd so a little walk, but well worth it.
― Ed, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)
Bottom of Grays Inn Road (as in South end) is about 50 yards from this building. Wonder why I haven't seen it?
― Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)
you have to walk past snow and rock, the bagel place and the key cutting place, so not right at the bottom.
― Ed, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)
But not all the way up to Theobalds Road? Still close. Maybe I will walk by there on the way to rehearsal. But then again, it will probably be closed, and you have FULE.
Argh, after saying I want to concentrate more on illustration and art, suddenly I find myself signing up to do loads of writing.
― Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)
Oh, Jesus...
depression often involves pushing people away, because they dont seem to care, so, you know, fuck them anyway...
(anyway, when people push you away, theyre really asking you to do the opposite a lot of the time, to show you actually give a fuck)
― Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)
Lotta people be guessing.
― Mark G, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)
it's not a guess, it's so true it makes me physically feel like throwing up. :-(
― Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)
It's strange, this place has taught me more about 'd' that I can sort of recognise it more. Things where I could take more to heart previously, now I can rationalise things better. Suppose I didn't suffer it myself but was close to someone who did, and it affected me? not exactly the clinical definition, but feeling like everyone needs help and not being able to supply, and feeling almost suic about that!
(gibberishly typed on purpose)

the impossible difficult thing is, recognizing what's going on and trying to stop yourself from pushing people away. unfortunately there are few things so unattractive as a needy person...
in other news, i went a whole day without coffee and was quite proud of myself (a calm mitya is a happy mitya). but i couldn't stop myself today, even though the coffee in the office is terrible and we don't have any cream.

Queens of the Stone Age has just the right amount of ease coupled with good imagery, so that would be good. VEGC would be rather spiffing also.
And yes, mitya is coming on to you, Kerr - he wants to skip through the fields singing Belle & Sebastian songs and eating ice cream with you.

Well, in the continuing saga of my co-worker... Now that his departure date is set for September 7, *his* *vacation* is set for August 20-31, I find him once again taking on freelance editing work (and thus, when he gets near their deadlines and doesn't have someone breathing down his neck about his work here) not doing the work he is paid his salary for.
And while I appreciate his "commitment" to his work, it's the pressure of multiple commitments that has driven him to at least one of his recent breakdowns. The logic, I guess, is that in freelance work he is making a *personal* commitment to his client/employer, whereas he doesn't feel that personal connection as an employee (which is super-fucked-up given the ratio between what we pay him and what he gets for freelance editing).
I am so ready to see the back of all this.
