We have an exciting new venue!

Its 7pm on a Friday night. Top Of The Pops may be gone, but Poptimism is here to take its place. Five reasons why Poptimism is better!

1) In a great pub with great beer.

2) No disapproving parents tutting and saying “is that a girl or a boy?”

3) 1400% longer than TOTP. 7pm – 2am!

4) Free! No need to buy a TV licence.

5) No Dave Lee Travis! No Fearne Cotton!

Join the Freakytrigger DJ’s on Friday 29th June at The Cross Kings, on York Way, a mere step or two from Kings Cross Station, bringing you the best of lovely modern pop music.

Still FREE to get in, decent range of drinks and, for the first time in a long time, going on 'til 2am!

CarsmileSteve, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

how do you know dave lee travis (who is this?) and fearne cotton won't turn up?!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

Shimura Curves gig in Kilburn that night. :-(

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

But we go on til 2am. So you can come over afterwards!

Pete, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 11:47 (eighteen years ago)

Not when you've stolen all our punters. :-(

Not like anyone would have come to see us anyway, but... wah, etc.

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 11:49 (eighteen years ago)

...and you remember what happened the last time I came to Poptimism after a gig. All my pedals got nicked. Though that was technically Magnus's fault.

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 11:49 (eighteen years ago)

Dave Lee Travis and Fearne Cotton are going to the SC gig! Cool!

mitya, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

2) No disapproving parents tutting and saying “is that a girl or a boy?”

Are you sure?

blueski, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 12:16 (eighteen years ago)

OK, there might be disapproving parents-to-be!

Pete, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 12:18 (eighteen years ago)

I'm only coming if somebody plays "Bastardo"

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 12:18 (eighteen years ago)

CORRECKSHIN!

TOTP2 still going strong in spare Saturday slots to fulfill all your Ray LaMontaigne and Hoosiers needs.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

nOPT TAWKING ABOUT totp 2. tAWKIN BOUT totp

Pete, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

Speaking of which, any chance of playing "Talkin' About Talkin' About" by Bubonique?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 12:34 (eighteen years ago)

I'm only coming if someone plays Tickle Tune. And any one of the several Glastonbury anthems that we have adopted in the next few days. What will be this year's 'George Bush Is An Islamic Fundamentalist', I wonder?

Matt DC, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 12:36 (eighteen years ago)

actually there will hopefully be a fair number of my cow-orkers as it is also my leaving do, so there may be soem gender-based confusion by parental units...

matt, that is a question we just can't answer.

CarsmileSteve, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 12:38 (eighteen years ago)

No Fearne Cotton!

sorry, you lost me at this point.

CharlieNo4, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't know she was from Eastcote.

blueski, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

as is siobhan donaghy and THE SWEET!

CharlieNo4, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

i'm totally moving there </derail>

CharlieNo4, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

Good job this isn't a Club Popular night since you'd have to play the Pol Pot single at the end.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

the cross kings is a very lovely venue.

ken c, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

and so much easier to get home from.

ken c, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

well, a bit easier

ken c, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

as in it wasn't that difficult before.

ken c, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

Yay! Last night in town before maternity leave starts, I can really let my hair down! ...oh, hold on... Still, I'm looking forward to it!

Vicky, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

Fearne Cotton is one the hundred sexiest women according to FHM magazine. Then again, so is the skanky one out of The Zutons.

No I did not buy it.

PJ Miller, Thursday, 21 June 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I did not know you were leaving, Smiler.

PJ Miller, Thursday, 21 June 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

yes, i am off to newham.

HULLO, THIS IS ON FRIDAY! top special guest DJs lined up already and everything.

Steely Dan?

Tom D., Tuesday, 26 June 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

there MUST be a tribute band called Stealy Dan.

blueski, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 12:03 (eighteen years ago)

Where is Winifred Atwell band?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 12:05 (eighteen years ago)

Just cos it is not on the list, doe snot mean it won't be played. Winifred Atwell is an old friend of Poptimism and is always welcome along with her Poor People Of Paris.

Pete, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

oh i have heard that song played so many times at poptimism over the years i don't think i could bear another airing of it. it must be so hard to resist the demands of the crowd who clamour for it every time tho of course.

blueski, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

... play it in celebration of Paris Hilton's release!

Tom D., Tuesday, 26 June 2007 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

It's the storming of the Bastille all over again.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 07:32 (eighteen years ago)

lovely flyer! NOM NOM halftone effects. (is it a hand holding a mic in the b/g?)

Alan, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 09:59 (eighteen years ago)

blueski, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 10:01 (eighteen years ago)

Alan, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 10:26 (eighteen years ago)

PLAY THE BUGSY MALONE ONE

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

no, listen to the question, the words in it.

oh alright it's yet another pic of kylie (from 'spinning around' vid)

blueski, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

"PLAY THE BUGSY MALONE ONE"

do you mean the new My Chemical Romance track?

Alan, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 10:36 (eighteen years ago)

No, the one about sitting at home with a cup of tea watching Corrie.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 10:45 (eighteen years ago)

wish i could be there..
sounds poptimistic!

Wrinklepaws, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 12:38 (eighteen years ago)

Aaah......wrinklepaws.

Pete, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

Goodness me, is this tonight already?

It will be raining, so wear majikal pixie waterproof capes. If you wear enough capes, we will play Hawkwind. And the Girls Aloud Hawkwind cover.

Pete, Friday, 29 June 2007 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

It'll be an interesting journey getting there tonight.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 29 June 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

xpost Are you saying the new venue has no roof?

ledge, Friday, 29 June 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

will you play "voodoo child" by rogue traders??

Tracer Hand, Friday, 29 June 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

If you wear enough capes, we will play Hawkwind. And the Girls Aloud Hawkwind cover.

That isn't Girls Aloud, that's SHIMURA CURVES. And you're just rubbing it in that we can't be there. :-(

Masonic Boom, Friday, 29 June 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

DJ GIVE US THE BUGSY MALONE ONE

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 29 June 2007 13:39 (eighteen years ago)

"will you play "voodoo child" by rogue traders??"

DUH

Alan, Friday, 29 June 2007 14:05 (eighteen years ago)

Will you play hot new Glastonbury anthem 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'?

Matt DC, Friday, 29 June 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

Total Eclipse Of The Heart more like.

TURN AROUND...

Pete, Friday, 29 June 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

I wanna hear the Spice Girls!

marianna lcl, Friday, 29 June 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

That was... yeah. Wow.

ledge, Saturday, 30 June 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

Best Poptimism since the days of the Polar Bear, definitely. As you know I'm no big fan of the Union Tavern but the Cross King's is such a lovely venue and the layout was perfect for Poptimism - best place you've found yet definitely. Bit thin on the ground early on but it was pretty obvious we'd get people arriving later due to the 2am close. I prefer that to being cut off or turned down at 11pm just when people are getting into the swing of things.

Best bit of the night = white umbrella dancing during Umbrella-ella-ella hooray. And playing I Love This Bar right at the end worked really well too.

I have lost my voice from too much singing. Well done everyone.

Matt DC, Saturday, 30 June 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

That whole yacht rock end section went down surprisingly well. Dancing on tables!

ledge, Saturday, 30 June 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

ELLA ELLA ELLA AY AY AY :D

lex pretend, Saturday, 30 June 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

I would like to know what records were played by Starry Sarah AKA DJ GLUEPOT.

PJ Miller, Saturday, 30 June 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

i'm jealous that apparently all my old co-workers were so impressed by the last poptimism (in april or something) that they went to this after i'd moved to america...

i think there should be a chicago poptimism. soon.

colette, Sunday, 1 July 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

colette! oh hai!

Alan, Sunday, 1 July 2007 10:04 (eighteen years ago)

i think there should be a chicago poptimism. soon.

Poptimism BRAND EXTENSIONS! Make it happen!

Matt DC, Sunday, 1 July 2007 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

Can we have one in Glasgow? Take it on tour!

ailsa, Sunday, 1 July 2007 11:32 (eighteen years ago)

franchise arrangements can be made at very reasonable rates ;)

that yacht rock end section in full (having been told by manager to turn it down/slow it down c. 1.35):

Africa - Toto
Rikki, don't lose that number - Steely Dan
Waiting for a girl like you - Foreigner (NB this was A REQUEST by someone i didn't know)
I love this bar - toby keith

CarsmileSteve, Sunday, 1 July 2007 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

"Can we have one in Glasgow?"

someone in glasgow ripped off the name (and kylie featured poster!) for their own night already!

http://www.myspace.com/thegarageglasgow

Alan, Sunday, 1 July 2007 11:43 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, but they aren't you, also worst club ever.

ailsa, Sunday, 1 July 2007 11:45 (eighteen years ago)

Is there any meaningful difference between "yacht rock" and Guilty Pleasures TM apart obviously from T Keith?

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 2 July 2007 07:30 (eighteen years ago)

steely dan are a Guilty Pleasure TM?

no deodato or doobie brothers sadly. thought asking for grover washington jr might have been pushing it

696, Monday, 2 July 2007 07:53 (eighteen years ago)

The S Rowley definition of Guilty Pleasures TM includes both the Dan and the Todd.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 2 July 2007 07:56 (eighteen years ago)

No guilt about playing what is clearly great music. Obv. No "Ha ha I am dancing to Toto", rather "hooray, Toto, Africa!".

Has anyone got a photo of Umb-a-rella - ella - ella - ay - ay dancing then. In particular the chin balancing!

Hopefully they will have us back.

Pete, Monday, 2 July 2007 09:12 (eighteen years ago)

Hopefully I'll be sufficiently non-knackered to go to the next one.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 2 July 2007 09:14 (eighteen years ago)

seven weeks at number one - the real reason this was the first poptimism in 3 months

Alan, Monday, 2 July 2007 09:40 (eighteen years ago)

Poptimism BRAND EXTENSIONS! Make it happen!

i think poptimism should just absorb other brands, and then have 3 shows a week and they sometimes show up on each other's shows to beat each other up and also every couple of months have a huge PPV where they all meet up and fight.

ken c, Monday, 2 July 2007 10:10 (eighteen years ago)

Lovely Poptimism - I had a really good time despite feeling like a dish cloth from heavy drinking the night before. The sofas helped me to recover in time for dancing, including pretending to be a Spice Girl with Marianna.

Anna, Monday, 2 July 2007 10:25 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think we want Russell Brand DJing at Club Poptimism with his vintage March Violets sides.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 2 July 2007 10:51 (eighteen years ago)

i quite like his ball sack

ken c, Monday, 2 July 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

ew
