Should this couple be allowed to name their child "4real"?

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- New Zealand authorities have blocked a couple's bid to officially name their new son "4real," saying numerals are not allowed.

Pat and Sheena Wheaton said they decided to name their new baby "4real" shortly after having an ultrasound and being struck by the reality of his impending arrival.

"For most of us, when we try to figure out what our names mean, we have to look it up in a babies book and ... there's no direct link between the meaning and the name," Pat Wheaton told TV One on Wednesday. "With this name, everyone knows what it means."

But when the parents filed the name with New Zealand's Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, they were told names beginning with a number were against the rules.

The government office has opened negotiations with the parents about the name under a policy that says all unusual names must be given case-by-case consideration.

"The name has not at this stage been rejected," Registrar-General Brian Clarke said in a statement Thursday. "We are currently in discussions with the parents ... to clarify the situation."

Clarke said the rules are designed to prevent names that are "likely to cause offense to a reasonable person." Satan and Adolf Hitler were proposed names that have been declined, he said.

If no compromise has been reached by July 9, the baby will be registered as "real," officials say.

New Zealand law requires all children born in the South Pacific nation to be registered with the Births, Deaths and Marriages registry within two months of birth.

should this couple be allowed to name their child "beeps"?

and what, Thursday, 21 June 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

People should be allowed to name their kids Satan or Hitler, or "Four", but probably not 4, simply because a numeric name could easily cause record keeping problems.

My parents named me Small Cat, and I've done very well in life.

jaymc, Thursday, 21 June 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116 (pronounced /ˈalˌbin/) was a name intended for a Swedish child who was born in 1991.

The boy's parents had planned never to legally name him at all, as a protest[1] to the naming law of Sweden (Namnlag (1982:670)), which reads:

“ First names shall not be approved if they can cause offense or can be supposed to cause discomfort for the one using it, or names which for some obvious reason are not suitable as a first name. ”

Because the parents (Elisabeth Hallin and Lasse Diding) failed to register a name by the boy's fifth birthday, a district court in Halmstad, southern Sweden, fined the parents 5,000 kronor (US$682 at the time). Responding to the fine, the parents submitted the 43-character name in May 1996, claiming that it was "a pregnant, expressionistic development that we see as an artistic creation." The parents suggested the name be understood in the spirit of 'pataphysics. The court rejected the name and upheld the fine.

The parents then tried to change the spelling of the name to A (also pronounced /ˈalˌbin/) instead. Once again, the court did not approve of the parents' ideas for naming because of a prohibition on one-letter naming.

jaymc, Thursday, 21 June 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

why are there prohibitions on names in so many countries? are there similar laws in the us?? this is so weird to me.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 21 June 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's to stop people being cunts to their children in lame attempts at being funny and/or radical.

onimo, Thursday, 21 June 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

Doesn't work, of course.

onimo, Thursday, 21 June 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

Who is to decide what is lame ONIMO

humansuit, Thursday, 21 June 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

Lower case please, all caps is LAME.

Teh Rule of Law (though I think most people would agree being named Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116 is the same as being named "my parents are cunts")

onimo, Thursday, 21 June 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

My Parents Are Cunts is a great NAME.

I only object to numerals in names. Everything else can be handled quite well by todays modern-day record-keeping systems. Even lame names like ONIMO.

humansuit, Thursday, 21 June 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Anyone that wants to name their kid something that idiotic shouldn't even be allowed to breed.

Last year I saw some assholes on Good Morning America who named their kid ESPN and were going to pronounce it "Espin".

it must be crazy-baby-naming month in wellington... one of my best friends just had a baby and him and his girlfriend decided on the name L3R0Y H3NDR1X L31TCH. [not with the actual numbers - i'm just paranoid my friend will one day google his kid's name and see this post and know it was me!]

and he will be blonde and blue-eyed... i don't know why, but leroy sounds like a big black man's name to me. the hendrix part came from the fact that apparently they were listening to jimi when baby was conceived...
