Sola scriptura is a silly doctrine. Mere primary scriptural texts in absence of context can be (and are) taken to mean anything at all. Therefore the tradition that has been handed down from generation to generation is much more likely to represent the original teachings as compared to new "interpretations" of modern day liberalized/secularized people.
However this defence only applies to the traditional catholism and not to modern day catholism. I don't understand exactly how this "update of christian doctrine" thing works. Did God phone the pope one night to tell him that He's no longer pleased by the burning of heretics?
