Homosocial decadence in West London? Grrrrr what has my militant bi motos of which I am currently in a relationship with been up to eh?!?!?

The oddest museum I have seen is in OXFORD, the Pitt Rivers!!! It has lots of SHRUNKEN HEADS! I am thinking of taking a SUNNY day off to spend more time looking at them when I am not hungover and tired and suffering. You can go and visit it before you go to Toms house for CAKES AND ALE!

Sarah, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, for the true taste of The British Empire go to the Pitt rivers, it's amazing, from the Longboat from the East Indies to the frog that was nailed above Tim's front door to ward off witches.

Wow, you all really do hate the French.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not my Paris backdrop!! How am I gonna make fun of the frogs??

you should go to Seven Dials. Back in the 18th century if you went there you would be killed. Now you won't be.

Actually, a totally top place to go is the area around Christchurch Spitalfields. The Church itself is a great big hulking mass of Hawksmoor scariness, and just round the corner from it is Brick Lane, street of curry.

by the way, I advise against going into London pubs and shouting "Good day Sirrah! I am an aesthetic visitor from the colonies here to try foaming tankards of your real ale, and to sample your quaint English culture"

Can I take it that "The League Of Gentlemen" is shown in Canada?

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes it is

anthony, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

However, it is perfectly acceptable to tap a Londoner on the head with your cane if you are trying to attract his attention.

DV, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DV - only if you are carrying a bail of hay. Are you trying to get him into trouble?

N., Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought the bale of hay went without saying - Anthony is Canadian, after all.

one year passes...
New answers?

two months pass...
the Wenlock Arms is a GRATE pub in a wonderfully seedy area of London. I had a pint there with Rener, Carsmile, The Pinefox, one of my Frank's APA pals, and some people who LIKED THEIR OWN KYNDE.

Mrs Carsmile was there too, keeping Mr Carsmile in check.

the Wenlock Arms is a GRATE pub in a wonderfully seedy area of London.

Haha - if I remember correctly, the Pinefox described said area as - quote "a shithole".

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm surprised tim hopkins has not posted to this thread.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

That area IS a shithole.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

bit harsh on Tim there Ricky

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

did the Wenlock Arms used to be called the Beckton Arms? (he says, trying to discern the relevance of the pic).

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 27 November 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

No. There is no relevance to that pic unless it is to be a quirky and slightly seedy corner of London, as requested by the questioner.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 27 November 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i suppose the shape of the building could be considered a quirk

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 November 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

is the world's smallest beer garden behind that wall?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 27 November 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Aldgate. I like how St Botolph's Church is all old and creepy and even though it's surrounded by all those 'new' buildings sometimes I think you can still see the Victorian hookers circling it. And then there's Kellys Food Hall, which is on the spot of one of the Ripper murders (although not Mary Kelly, that's a car park on Commercial Street).

Catty (Catty), Friday, 28 November 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but there are, like, seven different St. Botolph's Churches for the seven original gates of London!

Citizen Kate (kate), Friday, 28 November 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think the beer garden looks especially small.
