A cheesesteak without WHIZ is not a true cheesesteak at all.

ian, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

I've never heard anyone claim that provolone was not an authentic cheesesteak cheese.

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

no, ian is right

ghost rider, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

not to say that i haven't enjoyed many a non-whiz "cheesesteak" in my time

ghost rider, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

I kindly support any non-racist Cheesesteak vendors in the S.Philly cheesesteak corridor (I think Jim's is the best FWIW).

Steve Shasta, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

wow, i am not appetized at all

i will happily accept a false cheesesteak, tho

elmo argonaut, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

you're fucking dead to me, andrew.

ian, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

i'm too old for this kind of pain

strongohulkington, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

ian, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

whiz = false grail

strongohulkington, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

Aren't you from Philly or near 'bouts Jess? My Philly friends have always made this claim as well re: cheese whiz.

Ms Misery, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

I CAST DOUBT ON THE VERACITY OF ENTIRE THREAD

strongohulkington, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

god i miss philadelphia

strongohulkington, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

all i know is that no "real" cheese has the delicious creamy texture of a well-heated whiz.

ian, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

xpost

Oh wait, you're from Westchester right? How does Bam like his cheesesteak?

Ms Misery, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

PLEASE REWORD THIS

HI DERE, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

I've been eyeing this Philly-type place on 9th ave in Manhattan, supposedly authentique. I want to try the roast pork/broccoli rabe sub.

m coleman, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

i don't like cheese much in any form but sub-wise

provolone > whiz

m coleman, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

Whoa, my local Italian sub shop has a great roast pork sub and a great sausage and broccoli rabe sub, and yet that combination has never occurred to me until now (xpost)

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, provolone on steak > whiz
BUT whiz on fries >>>>> anything

Hurting 2, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

^^^ this is otm

strongohulkington, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

pat's invented the cheesesteak

hstencil, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

pat's blows.

scott seward, Monday, 25 June 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

u like gino's? u racist?

hstencil, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

it's gEno's.

pat's and geno's are overrated 4real.

Steve Shasta, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

i don't really like either of them. i don't need their friggin' attytude either. i miss tony luke's though. *drool* roast pork with sharp provolone and broccoli rabe. *drool*. their steaks are better too:

actually if i'm in the area around pat's n' geno's i just usually end up opting for banh mi.

hstencil, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

the secret of a good cheesesteak is that there is no secret. you can get one as good or better at a korean deli in philly as you can at pat's.

scott seward, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

having said that, if you are in philly, go to tony luke's and get the roast pork. mmmmmmmmmmm....

scott seward, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

no roast pork can be better than the pork in the cuban sandwiches at amigos viejos.

ian, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

maybe not. i've never been there. but tony's is delishhhhhhhhh!!!

scott seward, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

plus, tony is a cool dude:

scott seward, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

people who used to live in philly BUT DON'T NOW are always dissing whiz.

da croupier, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

and he has great commercials:

scott seward, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

i only go to pat's when i'm with friends from out of town (it's walking distance between my place and south st bars) so they can see the pics of famous folks and gawk at the glowing vomit on top of Geno's. More tourist traps should have hoagies at them.

i should check out these hoagies ex-pats (har) rep for, though.

da croupier, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:24 (eighteen years ago)

my fave steak is probably a pizza cheesesteak with fried onions and green peppers.

scott seward, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

http://delivery.viewimages.com/xv/71194570.jpg?v=1&c=ViewImages&k=2&d=17A4AD9FDB9CF19396908EAF14430D35B7D26CF53D7526C87F5F86BE1678DF32

sadly all the night pics on google are from before they added that turd on top so you can't see the cardboard hoagie with lit neon around it.

da croupier, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

i worked in a deli in philly for years though. i'd pretty much burnt out on steaks.

scott seward, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

http://boortz.com/images/genos_steaks.jpg

you can kiiinda see it there.

da croupier, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:33 (eighteen years ago)

one time me and some friends got hoagies from Pat's one night, and the next morning we got them from Geno's to compare and then got a second from pat's to make it a more honest taste test. We preferred Pat's, and that was BEFORE they did the "you must speak english" thing. I really don't have steaks when friends aren't around but I have Lorenzo's Pizza on my lunch break all the time.

da croupier, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

steaks, not hoagies. 3 each in like 12 hours. ugh.

da croupier, Monday, 25 June 2007 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

people who used to live in philly BUT DON'T NOW are always dissing whiz.

sanskrit, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

I had one cheesesteak while I was in Philly and it nearly killed me. Australians are not meant to have WHIZ.

King Boy Pato, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 09:46 (eighteen years ago)

I know rite? I just realised til this thread, I misunderstood what a "cheesesteak" was. I thought it was some kinda minute steak with cheese melted on it in a bun like a burger.

Rather than chopped meat with bizarre looking melted GOO all over it. I'm sure done right it could be delish but these pics ain't convincing me or my arteries. :/

Trayce, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 10:09 (eighteen years ago)
