i love hingis now and in retrospect, i hated her at the time b/c i loved graf (and hence was all like "hingis is only no 1 because steffi is injured") and novotna (1997! heartbreak at wimbledon again!) and majoli (1997 roland garros IN YA FACE martina).

i much prefer her game to the power players though, sharapova and vaidisova and co are making tennis nigh unwatchable.

once i saw her play against novotna at the chase championships at madison square garden. it was tight, but at the end, novotna tanked it. hingis won a vacuum cleaner, which she was expected to hold aloft for the crowd, which she did. i sort of warmed to her then. but i remember that she had said some relatively mean and ugly things in the press some time before that, but now i can't remember what. was it about mauresmo?

Yeah I remember some slighly homophobic stuff, about her being a man or something.

Still, I've always liked Hingis, be it as mean overachiever or as the new reformed sinner.

oh yes the "half a man" comment, proper crossing the line there. other than that i enjoyed her brattishness though, part of her entire appeal was in being a little bitch. i remember her remark to davenport when she won a coin toss before one of their matches, "do you want me to serve first or shall i break you?" and when asked why she'd smiled so much while beating some scrub, replied that "it was sweet, she actually thought she could beat me for a couple of games". the wta actually sent her on media training courses to curb her tongue, on her first tournament afterwards she waltzed into the press conference and proclaimed that they hadn;t taught her anything she didn't know already before making some jibe at serena williams.

i have just always been in love with martina. though i find her physically very attractive (her body is so great), it's really her GAME that has always been so beautiful to me. the grace, the variety, the depth and movement - always. i'm really sad that the game has changed so much that her sortof style doesn't hold up as much anymore, but i'm still hopin.

Davenport and her i think have always had a good rapport tho - i always found that so sweet, that they were good friends, had each other's backs. i remember there was a time when it was almost like the Williams sisters vs. Hingis and Big D (lol Davenport).

OMG STEFFI. i have that 99 french on tape (was it 99 or 2000?) - so crushing for me cuz i really didn't know who to go for! same as you Lex, at first i was like SO hesitant to like martina cuz i wsa in LOVE with Steffi. still am i guess.

I think you'll find the nickname refers to the country she represents rather than the country of her birth.
