the fighter jet one's an elephant hawkmoth. their caterpillars eat rosebay willowherb leaves.

Not sure why I'm not more freaked out by moths; I despise all kinds of insects. Maybe I feel sorry for them, they're so slow-moving.

for me it's because moths are beautiful, and they don't play the crawl-really-fast-all-over-the-floor-and-freak-the-shit-out-of-me game.

Saw an amazing moth on the window the other day. Larger than most. (Sort of) Red admiralish colours on its underside. Went outside to have a look and the top was all pale browns, barely noticeable.

Recommend any books about moths? (For identifying UK moths and/or a good read).

i use Photobucket a lot, it's free and seems pretty easy. other people will probably have their own recommendations.

second one looks like a cabbage moth?

i recently stumbled across this site that chronicles one person's adventures into home sericulture, also has a bunch of information about what common silkworms look like once they turn into moths and other varieties of moths that produce silk filament - like luna moths. it's WORMSPIT.COM so how could you not be intrigued

is that the same type of moth in the first three photos? a couple that resemble that first photo but not the other two have been hanging around in my house for a few days now, weirdly lumpy looking when viewed side on. we're not too bothered about getting rid of them but i suppose if they breed things could get a bit horrifying.

the last is a hummingbird hawkmoth. the first 3 photos contain a privet hawkmoth, or Sphinx, which has a sepulchral aspect and a shrouded, hunched form at rest, although its hindwings are brightly striped orange-pink and black and will be visible in flight as such. the body is striped more finely in similar colours. you need not be alarmed, unless you fear portents

these moths are the simple pish of mothkind though - like identifying a flamingo or a kingfisher. not even sport - dilettantish indulgence perhaps

have got loads of six spot burnets at my allotment at the moment, they have this beautiful crimson underwing when they fly off
