I got the thread title from Googlism, if you're wondering.

dan m, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

I like it.

n/a, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

More friendly than German AIDS ads.

Jordan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

Fortunately, a huge stack of boxes came between my screen and the meeting behind me.

KitCat, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

2.5 hours

KitCat, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

prolly about 5 hours. :(

kenan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

Do you get overtime?

KitCat, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

Hi folks. I'm back. No hard feelings?

Jesse, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

Wow this is a lovely T-storm!!

Jesse, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

I am quite fond of the German AIDS ad, as it is rather twisted, but in this mixed-message way that's also rather hot. It's like an anti-heroin ad that features heroin chic.

kenan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

Three or four hours

Jordan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

My day started at 6:45 and god knows when it'll be over. Meeting in Kenosha starting at 6 tonight, scheduled until at least 10. DO NOT WANT.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

T-storm? The sun is shining over here.

Ivan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

K-TOWN IN THE HOUSE

Jordan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

I drove through Ktown (on the westsiiiiiiiide of Chi) the other night. I saw a big fight in the street around Cicero and Jackson and, a little farther north, what looked like an evangelical revival gathering in a parking lot that was covered in a lot of broken glass.

dan m, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

My dad just invited me to this thing on Thursday at Millennium Park. Anyone else want to go?

Remembering Fela: Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, with special guest DJ Rich Medina (Music Without Borders)
Date: 6/28/2007
Time: 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Park location: Jay Pritzker Pavilion

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nigeria’s Seun Kuti is a great exponent of Afro Beat, the explosive political music invented by his father, Fela Kuti, in the 1970s. Seun plays with Egypt 80, his father’s original band. The 22-piece band boasts punching brass and rocking bass sections with a big band jazz/Afro funk sound complimented by a pulsating rhythm and incisive political messages.

jaymc, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

A little over 4 hours for me. I should really stay later, but I'm meeting my mom for dinner in Lincoln Square.

jaymc, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

It's over now, but for about 10 minutes we had a blasting downpour with thunder and brimstone.

Jesse, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

xpost I mean 3 hours.

jaymc, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

That sounds cool. I wonder how many of Fela's kids have afrobeat bands.

Jordan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

I know, when my dad first mentioned it, I assumed he was talking about Femi.

jaymc, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, John, you might run into Nick in Lincoln Square. He's going to his first guitar class tonight.

WOW! IT's crazy out the wazooo outside!

KitCat, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

It's dark.

Jesse, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

WHOA! Now it's crazy out the wazoo here! Street lights are on, power is failing.

Jesse, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

jeezy creezy. This is some muhfuggin RAIN.

kenan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

would someone care to sing at a wedding for me on saturday? or perhaps play the piano? or maybe you just want to come to work for me.....

sisut, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

Allah, why are you punishing Chicago?

kenan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

outhouses are SO sexy! The stink is like S&M and stuff.

So proud of myself, you guys.

KitCat, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

HAHAHA

That's way better than you posting about your nipples.

kenan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

I love thunderstorms.

KitCat, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

I'm near Belmont & Sheffield and Belmont's pretty flooded.

Eazy, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, this is not as bad as I had feared.

http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/31534

Still, it's a pretty steep phone plan.

Here's the damage: $60 a month for 450 minutes. $80 for 900 minutes. $100 for 1350 minutes. If you need even more minutes, plans continue to climb up to $220 a month for a whopping 6000 minutes. The good news: All plans include unlimited email and web, rollover minutes, unlimited mobile-to-mobile, and 200 text messages a month. All except the cheapest plan include unlimited nights and weekends minutes; the cheapest plan includes a mere 5000 of those. Contrary to earlier rumors there is no voice-only option for the iPhone: Remember you need data service to do all the cool email/web/mapping business that makes iPhone an iPhone, otherwise you've pretty much got a pretty brick in your pocket that can play Avril Lavigne tunes.

kenan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

It comes pre-loaded with Avril Lavigne?

dan m, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

haha not really.

Hall and Oates.

kenan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

Well at least they're not posers.

dan m, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

Does anyone happen to know if the Congress Plaza strike is still ongoing?

Jordan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

Still on strike.

Jeff, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

What has it been, like 3 years?

Jeff, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

More like 4, I think?

Jordan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

Check that, 4 years.

Jeff, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

yes.

Jeff, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

OMG can I gush about a record? Sometimes I feel like I just come here to gush about records.

anyway: Nicole Willis and the Soul Investigators - Keep Reachin' Up

It's out of time and place. It's from Finland, but not Finnish by any stretch. It's a mix of 70's soul and funk and 60's girl groups... sometimes in the same track, but the album covers a whole lot of ground from song to song, and it's all KILLER (and I guess it goes without saying, no filler). I'm having a hard time thinking of someone who WOULDN'T like this record. Certainly all you guys would dig it.

kenan, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 00:12 (eighteen years ago)

Jordan why are you asking about the Congress strike?

The strategy now is to shut that fucker down since there is clearly no hope for a contract and maybe once it's out of the absentee owners' hands it can be returned to some semblance of its former self. At the commemoration of year 3 they held a "funeral" for the hotel, carrying a coffin around the block while making a racket and playing drum and trumpet then having a "burial" with a really rousing sermon.

http://www.congresshotelstrike.info/

The stories on that website about its having turned into a shithole seem true enough considering what you can see from street level: the lounge area is still in shambles, with half torn up carpet and floring, and yellow caution ribbon blocking parts of the room.

Jesse, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 05:03 (eighteen years ago)

I walked into the office today at work and there was a huge Pakistani flag propped up in the corner. Turns out the F0re|gn M|n|st3r of P@k|st@n and a prince from some former Soviet state plus a bunch of other VIPs came into my work on Friday while I was away! It was a big fucking cluster fuck and the management fucked it up but good, with the help of the officials representing the dignitaries.

The representative called a couple of weeks ago and I answered the phone and when I transferred him to the manager I said, "May I tell her who's calling?" and he got in a big fucking huff, asking why I was asking so many questions (I only asked one).

Anyway. They had US Secrt Svc guys all over the place, and they refused to fax us a guest list until 2 hours before the event was to start. Then 1 hour before they sent an ammended one in tiny, tiny script and they were supposed to correctly transcribe these for name plates.

The management fucked up by having 2 very different plans, and then attempting to squeeze in a few early reservations into the section where this party was to sit. That did not work out well at all.

The SS guys were apparently super jaw-droppingly hot and most of them were very aggressively hitting on the women--all except one guy who came back in today with his mother. My gay co-worker who waited on them and who has been celibate for 18 months was uncharacteristically smitten (to the point of saying repeatedly, "I'm honestly in love with him at first sight") was joking around saying that he was going to wait at the host stand outside the bathroom and make his move. Well, turns out he didn't have to because the SS guy made his move first. He stopped and very clearly hit on this waiter, saying that he really couldn't wait to come back and he would be back frequently and when did he (the waiter) work next, etc.

Ha ha!! The waiter just called me asking me to go out with him (to the fucking Granvil Anvil!) b/c something snapped in and he needs to fuck someone immediately (not me).

If you respond, be careful to not make this Googlable since I might get in trouble for talking about this.

Mornin' Chicago.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

Mornin'.

Dear coworker: Please do not comment on my wet hair (too late). You are the only other person here this early. Surely, you can stomach it.

KitCat, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 13:13 (eighteen years ago)

Dear Chicago property developers,
Please stop building "luxury" condos now. There are still a few of us left that aren't pulling down six figures salaries and we'd like a decent place to live too.

kthxbye,
me

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

I may have to try Adium, depending on how it handles voice and video.

kenan, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

I know nothing about how it does those things, as they are beyond my needs from a chat client.

dan m, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think it does voice or video.

gbx, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

Of all the risks in life, I think that the head buzz is a great one. It's different enough to feel like you did something a little crazy but it's low-risk in that it will grow back. I think it would look like a natural fit on you. Leaf loves shaving his head because of how easy it is. I think the biggest risk is falling in love with it & never going back to the head o' hair.

As for facial tattoos, I must say that I have never seen more in my whole life than when I moved here. TONS of face tats in the Twin Cities. Unbelievable!

I am slowly considering a tattoo on my forearm.

sweet tater, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

Rly? I didn't notice any face tats when I was up there last, wasn't hanging out in the cool places obv.

I like forearm tattoos but won't get one because of work/family :(

Jordan, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

mad face tats at the triple rock, both employees and customers

dan m, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think it does voice or video.

Well then. There are only a couple of people that I do voice and/or video with, but they're a couple of my favorite people. :)

kenan, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

The face tats are not really in any particular area, I just notice folks who have them from time to time. I never saw any in chicago only in seattle before now. the seattle face tat looked like a teen runaway & i felt really old when i thought, "poor dear will sure have trouble finding a job with that."

i hear you on the forearm tat. i kinda think they're sexy but the one i want (a horseshoe crab) runs the danger of looking really weird & freaky if it isn't done right. i wish there was a way to get a fake tattoo of it first - something that lasted a week or so - so i could see if i liked it.

sweet tater, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure there is one. I've seen people with temp ones before trying them out before they went in for the real deal.

KitCat, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

Dudes, I swear this is the zittiest summer ever. :-(

KitCat, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

I thought at first you meant that the tattoo was *of* a teen runaway, and I thought that's a weird tattoo to put on your face.

jaymc, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

My zittiest summer ever too!!!

sweet tater, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

Me too. Also, I thought you meant that you saw multiple people in Seattle with this same face tat of a runaway.

KitCat, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

It's a community action project. There's a lot of missing kids out there and the face tats are showing real results in getting them back to their homes.

dan m, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

i totally need an editor on here. sorry for the confusion. i saw one teen runaway in seattle with a face tat. i don't remember what the face tat looked like. it was the first face tat i ever did see.

sweet tater, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

Bigger/better than the Runaway Train video?

KitCat, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

zittiest summer: '97 or '98

gbx, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

I don't remember when my zittiest summer was, but that time I worked as a bus-boy in an Italian restaurant was probably my zitiest summer.

jaymc, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

I've been slightly zitty this summer, but this has NOT been my sweatiest summer ever, so I am immensely thankful.

kenan, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure I've had zittier summers in my life, but this is probably the zittiest summer of my adult life.

sweet tater, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

Yep.

KitCat, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure I've had zittier summers in my life, but this is probably the zittiest summer of my adult life.

3x!

Jordan, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

OKAY, DUDES:

I have received the cd of the pretentious coworker. His band is called RECONS1D3RATE and he has helpfully included instructions, i.e. "for example, you might say something like, "At about 1:43 deep in track#7, there seems to be a bit too much high end on the vocal track. It was kind of distracting."" Also his signature is UNBELIEVABLY elaborate. The signature of a genius.

I'm about to put the cd in.

Jordan, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

OMG there is a little card inside that says "original artr0nic for those who walk the path of s0litude"

dan m, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

It kind of sounds like Pretty Hate Machine if Weird Al was singing.

Jordan, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

Not to be crass, but that's akin to almost getting me off & then throwing on a clown wig & dancing around in rubber boots. I can't think of anything clever at the moment so it's clowns & wigs, dudes.

sweet tater, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

this guy must REALLY like you if he's TRUSTING you with HIS SOUL.

sweet tater, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

The programming is actually pretty competent in a bedroom IDM sense, I kind of wish it was worse. It's the vocals that are silly.

(fwiw I've never actually met this dude)

Jordan, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

oh, and to clarify, it's whomever is getting me off that dons the wig & shoes. Not me, dudes.

sweet tater, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

haha

His vocals are like this talking-with-long-pitch-bends style that gives the illusion of singing but is not actually singing.

Jordan, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

I want to know what Jeff thinks.

jaymc, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

Jesse, Thursday, 19 July 2007 04:26 (eighteen years ago)

OHOH, I wanted to tell you about my train ride.

There was a drunk group of 40 to 50-somethings, including one very scruffy looking fat flamboyant gay guy. His group got up and left him, and he finished off his 22 of Miller Lite. At some point he stood up and went behind me and after a few minutes I noticed a weird sound that I thought was just Kurt Cobain hollering, as I was listening to In Utero, but then I heard very clearly, "DEAD NIGGER--" and I didn't remember that being a lyric in "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter."

The guy was alternately and yelling. One black guy on the train told him to watch his mouth, and he said, "FUCK YOU, YOU'RE A DEAD NIGGER." The world came to a halt and I heard a woman say "uh-oh." The black guy handed his phone and cigarette to a bystander and walked over to the drunk dude, stood chest-to-chest with him and said quietly right into his ear, "You. watch. your. mouth. Understand?" The guy had tucked his chin into his chest and was finally quiet. Then the train pulled into Belmont and he shambled off.

Kind of nerve-wracking, the whole thing.

HAY

I know there's a new thread and everything, but I am not going to be the first post.

1. Also, I thought Amanda was going one day.

-- KitCat, Monday, July 16, 2007 1:30 PM (3 days ago) Bookmark Link
I was there! I saw Jaymc in the VIP (or, once he saw me, the "IP") area and I think he was talking to Nabisco. Thanks for introducing me! ;_;
Anyway, SY was really great from where I was standing. I saw the muscles around Kim G's knees and they were impressive.

2. I read a wee bit upthread and while I know that no one wants to talk about this anymore, if D and I can afford a condo, I can assure you that you guys can too. When we bought this place our combined income was <$45K a year. We put 5% down, which amounted to just about $8K. You do the rest of the math. That was years and years of plotzing pennies into savings plus a wee bit of cash that I got from my grandma's passing. It's not chump change, and boy do i know that, but it's not $20K. We have 2br 2 bath with deeded parking. Not THE most beautiful or most convenient place in the entire universe, but it's ours. And it also explains why we live north of Touhy. But there's a nice, clean neighborhood bar across the street, a produce market 3 blocks away, several parks, a convenient (albeit malodorous) el stop and it's 1 block west of the lake.
