The Great ILX What Do You Do (mainly) In Your Spare Time? Survey

Message Bookmarked

When you come home from Work/College/whatever how do you mainly spend your time?
And partly inspired by some posts on this thread The Record Industry's Decline how have things changed in the digital age?

In the 1960s music was the big passion for youngsters, but that all changed. Since the 1980s computer games and videos/dvds seem to have taken over. But what about YOU?

The Twisted Pollstarter, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

I don't see "Making Out" as an option.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

Aye, Alfred and I 'make out' a lot.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

It really seems like "wasting time on the Internets" should be a poll option.

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I said "Making Music/Listening To Music" but the real answer is probably ILX :(

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

Also "browsing the internet while listening to music" RWALLY ought to have been an option.

As should be "Playing Animal Crossing on DS while listening to postroc on expensive headphones and thinking about reading Kurt Vonnegut books".

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

where's the "directing amateur pornography" option?

milo z, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

I second milo.

And knitting.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

You should combine your passions.

milo z, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

I couldn't specify my other.

Knitting needles and sex really don't work out too well. Well, maybe circs.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

It's already in the works, milo. It involves knitted cozies for the nether regions.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

*wishes she had a picture of her vibrator/dildo cozy*

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

srsly, I bet hipsters would pay big bucks for tattooed naked girls knitting (and kissing)

milo z, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

maybe suicide girls already has a subgenre for this. i, however, would throw in the librarian, and take it to the next level.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

buns optional.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

If you're really good of course the knitting covers the fake half-balls. Amateurs can only protect the shaft.

humansuit, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

shit, I forgot vandalism!

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

this thread has taken a sexy turn

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

srsly, I bet hipsters would pay big bucks for tattooed naked girls knitting (and kissing)

You mean similar to this? (tiny pic but it is an Elvgren knitting pin-up)

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

(x-post)
Yeah, Curt1s is correct as usual.
Like, I've been pondering for awhile this:

Knitting needles and sex really don't work out too well.
-- Ms Misery

...and I still amn't able to get my mind, let alone teh body, round to said "knitting sex" wondrousity.

t**t, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

Should've had a mess around on the internet while listening to music option.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

I have a job

RJG, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

just kidding

RJG, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

you?

RJG, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

What about boring shit like cooking, housework etc? It's not all fun and games, you know. (also, the music-listening options are surely an accompaniment to the drugs/drinking/reading/gaming options)

ailsa, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

I knew I had forgotten something.

The Twisted Pollstarter, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

WTF?! No entry for Watching TV AND Getting Drunk at Home?!

Saxby D. Elder, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

Um, is the assumption that all ILXers are single and/or childless? Children take up the bulk of my "spare" time. Of course, I do subject them to my music so I suppose that's combining interests.

Mr. Odd, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 03:23 (eighteen years ago)

I cant pick one of these, I do lots of them! Mostly making/listening to music but also cooking, writing and watching DVDs. Oh and intarwebs lol.

Trayce, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 03:57 (eighteen years ago)

self-destruction.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

^^ this

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 04:05 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah wait I didnt see the drinking at home option. Hm.

Trayce, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

That's the option of last resort. Surely you're doing other things?!?

kenan, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 04:27 (eighteen years ago)

What? hell no I drink at home al the time, its fun! :)

I mean obviously I'm doing other things at the same time like music and Simpsons and internet and stuff. Last resort? Pft.

Trayce, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 04:33 (eighteen years ago)

internet

gr8080, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

I had to say 'other', drinking at home is a kind of side-activity. It can be done in conjunction with most of the other options, as can taking drugs.

In my 'leisure time' I visit friends and relatives and tour (for want of a better word) scotland.

Shagging isn't on the list either.

*rumpie*, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 08:52 (eighteen years ago)

Oh well, just tick "other" if it's not on the list.

The Twisted Pollstarter, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 09:35 (eighteen years ago)

I did, don't take it personally, I think your poll is great. It's up there with the best.

*rumpie*, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 09:37 (eighteen years ago)

Hehe. If "other" was to get lots of votes I can always do another poll with those suggestions.
But it's not really meant to be definitive, it's just a bit of fun.
A quick poll to see what (hobbies) people do outside of ilx. (I suppose I should have included ILX as an option), but the reason for the poll was because of posts on the other thread about how music doesn't seem to be the lifestyle choice that it was some years ago. And I wondered what most ilxors got up to in their spare time, and maybe to see why music wasn't the main choice. ILX has a broad range of ages so it would be interesting to see comments on whether it was age was the reason music wasn't important for them or of course the other reasons that they just enjoyed doing something else.
I kind of expected dvds to top this as I find more people are interested in DVD collections than music, but you never know with all the gamers around here.

The Twisted Pollstarter, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 09:53 (eighteen years ago)

Any reasons why music isn't as important these days or why dvds or games (or anything else) are would be much appreciated. I am genuinely intrigued.

The Twisted Pollstarter, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 09:53 (eighteen years ago)

I listen to a lot less music now compared to even a year ago, I don't know why. I guess I'm finding it harder to 'get into' new music, I don't really have the patience to listen and re-listen to tracks like I used to.

Now when I get new music and a track doesn't grip me straight away I skip to the next one, it's a habit I've only recently picked up and I'd like to shake it.

*rumpie*, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 10:07 (eighteen years ago)

I can't really choose any of these as my main pastime either - it's all about the multitasking baby!

(Baby being the operative word actually - she has changed how I spend my time more than any other factor.)

Archel, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 10:14 (eighteen years ago)

I know what you mean. If I watch a movie I'll see it all the way through, with a cd it's too easy just to skip a track. It's worse if I am listening to an ipod, I don't think i've ever heard an album all the way through on one go, even when on a train or bus journey.
x-post

The Twisted Pollstarter, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 10:17 (eighteen years ago)

in light of this morning's topicality, i move that 'cheating on S.O.' be included in this poll.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 10:26 (eighteen years ago)

'Fantasising'

*rumpie*, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

Perhaps I should have included a "I don't have any hobbies or spare time" option.

The Twisted Pollstarter, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

I have to say cooking, which is a hobby/passion of mine. I started cooking last night for a party this Saturday. And I cook a lot on the weekends too.

Jaq, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

I went with computer games, but a close second is watching TV (downloaded) and a not-so-close third is sports-related etc (kick ball around)

Will M., Wednesday, 27 June 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

I had to pick "making music/listening to music" because "going to gigs and sitting in the back drawing" wasn't one of the options.

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

I can't please everyone!

The Twisted Pollstarter, Thursday, 28 June 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder how many will choose the get drunk at home option

The Twisted Pollstarter, Thursday, 28 June 2007 11:34 (eighteen years ago)

sports activities

Just got offed, Thursday, 28 June 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

euphemism?

g-kit, Thursday, 28 June 2007 12:02 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

I can't choose. ;_;

jessie monster, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know why, but these two options strike me as hilarious:

Taking Drugs
Getting Drunk at home

yet, I know they are perfectly valid choices.

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

I would be surprised if they got zero votes. Would it be sad if people did choose them?

The Twisted Pollstarter, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

I CHOSE ONE OF THOSE OPTIONS.

jessie monster, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe it's just the particular wording. I don't know why I find it hilarious.

Actually, it reminds me of the other day when a coworker (old lady) came up to me and said, "Do you take drugs?" and I gave her an annoyed "pfffft, no." And she said, "Oh, because this fax came and I just thought if you took any drugs you might be interested in it." It was some bullshit solicitation fax about saving $ on pharm's and she's a retard.

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

Will it be more hilarious if one of them win?

The Twisted Pollstarter, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

Knitting needles and sex really don't work out too well.

There's a book publised about knitting and SM or something.

Getting Drunk at home

My gran did this for years. However, I think I'd label it more as addiction than "doing in your spare time."

I didn't see knitting while watching telly as an option. :-(

nathalie, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, it never occurred to me to have knitting as an option. Too late now.
All those who would choose knitting post now saying so.

The Twisted Pollstarter, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it's a bit strange that "crafts" or the like knitting/sewing isn't on the list, come to think of it.

Also, no gardening. Is that a function of age group? I mean, if we were a bunch of normos, we might well have "DIY" on the list. What a shame that "tinkering in the shed" is no longer a spare time activity.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

Only because I don't have a shed.

Ed, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

"tinkering in the shed" usually = "taking drugs" or "getting drunk at home"

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, I can def understand knitting not being an option, but CRAFTS?

nathalie, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

As someone who left Claire of the hottest Losties poll I can defend Mr. Twisted and say it's hard to remember/think of every reasonable option.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

internet nonsense

Ste, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

i'm hoping GAEMZ is gonna be an unexpected frontrunner, but i'm fairly sure ILX0rs will play down their gaming habits.

g-kit, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

fishing, bmxing, photography

Ste, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

all at the same time.

Ste, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

g-kit, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

Sam, I know and I don't mind really. :-)

nathalie, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

actually in order of usage it probably goes from top to bottom:

internet nonsense
photography
gaming
fishing
bmxing

Ste, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

Everyone yelled at me for leaving out Claire though. :(

xpost
(I thought photography said pornography.)

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

ms mis, leaving out claire on a hottest lostie list does not equal forgetting a reasonable option.

g-kit, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

I chose "Reading books" - although I'm also including reading magazines and newspapers and things online in that category.

o. nate, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

That sounds perfectly ok with me.

The Twisted Pollstarter, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

My kinda gal! :-)

stevienixed, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Only 6 hardcore gamers?

The Twisted Pollstarter, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 08:36 (eighteen years ago)

i don't believe it either.

g-kit, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 08:45 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe they were too busy playing games to vote?

The Twisted Pollstarter, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 09:34 (eighteen years ago)

even i managed to get a vote in. i think they just chose something productive to look cool.

g-kit, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 09:41 (eighteen years ago)

I feel bad now for not picking painting/drawing. Because I do that, too. And no one voted for it.

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 09:42 (eighteen years ago)

Only two people besides me clicked "pubs"? Though I would've chosen "hanging out with friends" if there would've been such an option, it doesn't necessarily have to be in pubs.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 09:43 (eighteen years ago)

I was going to have the option "hanging around street corners drinking".

The Twisted Pollstarter, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 12:53 (eighteen years ago)

g-kit, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

It's a bit biased towards Nintendo

The Twisted Pollstarter, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

at least HL2 is in there

g-kit, Thursday, 5 July 2007 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

I'm surprised drinking didn't score higher.
