james bolam wasn't it? early 80s? set/filmed in leeds? seems to have fallen by the wayside in the collective memory. deservedly? i don't know, maybe you do. maybe bolams likely lads work is too defining for this to get a look in?

opinion?

It hasn't fallen from my collective memory, but all the details have. I thought it was quite good at the time, but I thought everything was quite good. In the hope of stirring up some controversy, I'll say it was better than Spender.

Despite extensive Yorkshireness, TBA was great, as was the follow up Beiderbecke Tapes. I can't remember anything about the third one (the Beiderbecke Connection?). I think Alan Plater was onto something. I loved the puzzled posh copper.

And Barbara Flynn = ROWR.

James Bolam excaliming "Haway the lads" at a critical moment in lovemaking.

I got the book of The Beiderbecke Tapes in my Christmas stocking when I was about 14.

Again, the details have fallen from my mind, but I remember liking it at the time.

The mention of Barbara Flynn, like a televisual Proustian madeleine, has set me to remembering several teenage reveries, as BF was a major lust object for lickle Edna (I think her voice was a big part of this). The majestic series of performances from Professor Rose Marie (?) in 'A Very Peculiar Practice' to Beiderbecke and then Mrs Cracker is peerless. She has slightly spoiled my fondness by doing voice- overs for private healthcare ads in recent years.

very peculiar practice!!! That programme was bloody brilliant, why is it never shown on the digital channels? and what was going on with those nuns? and what was the name of the predatory doctor? Bob someone?

I enjoyed it: the moonstruck outer limits of Leeds, footie references before it became fashionable, leftist sentiments et al.

I think about it quite a lot, coz Barabara Flynn's character was called Mrs Swinburne, and there's a Swinburne Road near me here in Oxford. Lots of good ppl in it...Dudley Sutton plays a teacher, Ian Bleasdale (Josh the ambulance driver from Casualty) plays a vicar etc.

five months pass...
I got my nickname from this show, I just bought the videos, better than Spender true, but a gentle dig at those in power, watered down Jazz but a good series, Barbara Flynn is always great and Bolam of course, give it a try, it's a Sunday night show if ever I saw one.

The Peculiar practice shows were good too as others have said, but what were the Barchester Chronicles like?

Geoff beat me to it. Played by David Troughton (the Dr Who who died at a Dr Who convention's son). But the character never liked being called Bob and always insisted on Robert.

Graham Crowden (later in Waiting for God) was v. good in VPP too.

graham crowden was only ever terrible in Doctor Who and the Horns of Nimon, but then he had to contend with awful story. (Janet Ellis was also in it)

I'll buy it if it is. I had such a crush on Barbara Flynn as a kid.
