Some of these are interesting to me because they're not so much attempts at styles, and more just things that certain social and personality types seem to just independently invent?
1. Young male, skinny, fluffy mustache attempt, tan raincoat, unfashionable button-downs and high-waisted khakis: "that kid who wears the fedora"
2. Young male, medium-long hair, bad facial fuzz, unfashionable glasses, baggy black/camo Army-style pants, black trenchcoat or duster, perceived by adults as a school shooting waiting to happen

Is the kid who wears the fedora involved in drama club?

3. NABISCOS POSTING STYLE.
― KANTLIPS, Friday, 29 June 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)
Drama club, D&D, computer programming, A/V -- I think the main personality trait is kinda "geek who aspires to be adult-like?" Cf Schweiber from Freaks & Geeks.

young male no. 1 just wears whatever his mom buys him. except for the fedora, which he got from his grandad after he died or something.

How about the eastern european / russian immigrant kid, fresh off the boat in like a disney or bugs bunny shirt, except they are like 14-15.

School-aged girl who gets a little too Punky Brewster with the colors / accessories -- this is still a constant, right?

Homer: Marge, the boy was wearing a hawaiian shirt. Marge: So? Homer: There's only two kind of guys who wear those shirts: gay guys and big, fat party animals. And Bart doesn't look like a big, fat party animal to me... Marge: So, if you wore a Hawaiian shirt, it wouldn't be gay? Homer: Right. Thank you.

a kid who tries to dress jock-ish, but he clearly doesn't play sports and all of his team gear is funny-colored teams like the ol' charlotte hornets or older anaheim mighty ducks

Fat guy party animal in short-sleeved print shirt
are they similar to the guys who are ready to hit the town in their black polyester flame-print "camp" shirts? http://www.hidebay.com/catalog/images/flame-shirt.jpg
― andrew m., Friday, 29 June 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)
if anyone should ever wear those shirts, people who are pear-shaped should not wear those shirts.
― kenan, Friday, 29 June 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)
those guys are like slacker-guido. never seen that.
― wanko ergo sum, Friday, 29 June 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)
yes, but how do you splain it to them? they probably consider the shirts an act of defiance, symbols of their individuality. like the snakeskin jacket in _wild at heart_. xp

i can't find any pictures of a popular variant during my HS years-- the printed silk shirt with marvel or DC characters/logos, or samurai
― Will M., Friday, 29 June 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)
we have a "fedora guy" in college--i thought it was the kind of thing you grew out of by age 19, like rat tails or something.
i think the key with the fedora isnt just that his grandfather left it to him but that he think its really cool--like v. independent and maybe even sort of "quirky." hes also under the impression that he's a much better dresser than most other ppl his age.
― max, Friday, 29 June 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)
big HOOS aka the steendriver also OTM; that's the girl who "casts spells" and writes long and involved fantasy novels during class. she's usually friends with manga girl, and they both never got out of/over the "horse phase"

There's a guy I work with (in a different department) who has long blond hair he ties into a ponytail and usually wears a trench coat, black jeans, and long black combat boots. Maybe an earring, too? Anyway, there was some office party a while ago at which he made a hasty exit, and someone turned to me and said "Where's he going?" I said, "I think Neil Gaiman's doing a reading at the Borders down the street."

the printed silk shirt with marvel or DC characters/logos, or samurai -- 99% of my seeing these has been either on the South Side of Chicago or in Harlem (i.e., black men)

- older-guy "bohemian" / "artsy" look that consists of like cheffy pants, sandals, oversized black long-sleeve t-shirts, and weirdly colored berets or other odd hats -- looks kinda like a sculptor who plays bass in a reggae band, carries multiple pledge-drive tote bags at once -- how does this one still exist and not get any older?
― nabisco, Friday, 29 June 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)
was neil gaiman actually having a reading? either way it's funny, just changes the funny.

xpost I mean, when I was a kid, That Guy was in his 40s/50s. I'm now nearly 30, and That Guy is still in his 40s/50s. People are apparently adopting this style, but from whom?

― andrew m., Friday, 29 June 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)
nabisco I totally have one of those guys as a client, he looks like he woke up from a 20 year coma and someone gave him a flipbook of every fad he missed which he ordered from/wears at random. His house is like an Silver Spoons mansion 2007 with like every square inch packed with something awesome/weird/fun.

Guy who's really into Pink Floyd, The Doors, and Led Zeppelin. You know, reeeal music. Wears faded, torn jeans and stained "American Poet" t-shirt. Has the Shakespeare facial hair.
