Survivorman needs to stop bitching about hauling around the camera equipment.

Man vs. Wild. Bear Grylls is pretty amazing. I love when he was in Africa and spotted some vultures and deducted that there was (relatively) fresh meat around...and he hunkered down on a zebra shoulder.

I'd also contend that I Shouldn't Be Alive should be added to the list, though I haven't seen too many of them. The interpersonal drama in addition to fighting for survival makes for some interesting tension, albeit poorly re-created.

Survivorman's kind of a pussy.

ILE loves it some Bear. Kinda.

Dirty Jobs is a much better show than any of these, but it's more Man vs. I Hope You Get Paid A Lot To Do THAT.

Dirty Jobs vs. Ice Road Truckers vs...

Sad I missed this one.

Dirty jobs really is good. Even though many of the jobs just suck. Mike Rowe just seems like that type of guy where you could put in pretty much any social situation and he would be friends with everyone. Plus he is funny as well.

I like Deadliest catch, mainly for Rowe's narration. It is sort of repetitive other wise.

After hearing from my coworker for weeks about Man Vs. Wild, I managed to catch a marathon on DISC last night and my god is it addictive. I think the pleasure in watching it obviously revolves around what crazed stunt he might pull in order to up the threshold of excitement, but at the same time it's somehow very informative.

Given the stripped-down nature of the program, I think the most fascinating part is that it seems to offer something for everyone: action, adventure, logic, camping, golden showers, cooking, etc.

This one just got the Tivo season pass on the basis of the Iceland episode alone.

Am I the only one who hates nature programs?

Strangely enough I'm watching one now. Ironic self-loathing?

Nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 9 October 2009 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

National Geographic tried doing Survivorman with an amateur doc maker - he had to be hauled out of the wilderness, starving and hallucinating.

Oh man, I'd watch that!

Survivorman's kind of a pussy.

This was the only show of those polled that has any kind of basis in reality or credible information on what survival in the wilderness actually looks like. Les Stroud was isolated far from any nearby aid, ate only what he could scavenge, and had to fight to stay warm with only the barest of clothes and tools. By contrast Bear Grylls was just putting on a show and was eating filet mignon as soon as the cameras were turned off.

Aimless, Monday, 4 November 2013 05:45 (eleven years ago)

Yes, completely unfair assessment. IIRC he had to back away from the whole project because after a couple of seasons of this the physical and emotional toll was too much.
