Am I the only one who loved the first season of this show? I thought it was brilliant and definitely one of the best things that I watched last year. I watched the entire season these past two weeks and have been blown away, to the point that I am going to be sure to order Showtime before the season 2 premiere in September. Michael C. Hall is an incredibly talented actor; I actually had no idea that he also played David Fisher in "Six Feet Under" because the characters are so different both physically and emotionally.

I was a little put off by some plot contrivances, but mostly really enjoyed the show. I'll see what arrangebittorrentments I can make to see the second season, too.
Based on a series of books, right? Anyone read those?
― Oilyrags, Monday, 2 July 2007 17:02 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, it basically followed the first book quite faithfully but from what I hear they are going to diverge quite a bit from the second book in the series in the second season.
― youcangoyourownway, Monday, 2 July 2007 17:09 (seventeen years ago)
I've been wondering what they're going to do with the second series - I haven't read the books, but
SPOILERS
if icetruck is dead, and all the childhood/father exposition is out, the only real option they have is to have his girlfriend or coworkers slooowly figure out that he is actually a killer while he kills more. Hopefully they'll surprise me though
― robertwolf8080, Monday, 2 July 2007 17:47 (seventeen years ago)
They're starting this on TV in the UK. Perhaps I will watch it, to fill the empty hours till my real shows start again.

How he made himself increase so much in attractiveness between SFU and Dexter I will never know.
accentmonkey, you must watch it.
― youcangoyourownway, Monday, 2 July 2007 19:06 (seventeen years ago)
I started watching Dexter the day I finished watching SFU without knowing Michael C Hall was in both.
Dexter started off quite nicely but it let me down from the third episode onwards. It felt rather obvious who the icetruck killer was from quite early on and the whole backstory of Dexter + icetruck guy really was a bit too much over the top for my liking. Fancy that, the two of them becoming killers. Also, I kept wondering all throughout the series if the deaths of people Dexter killed were actually noticed by anyone. Not that that actually needed to be dealt with, but you know it had me wondering. All in all, Dexter was OK-ish but i probably wont watch the 2nd series unless im really bored.
― Jibe, Monday, 2 July 2007 21:49 (seventeen years ago)
It's pretty lifeless and stretched a quick read way too far.
I was hoping, initially, that the series would take the general idea and run with it, him killing bad guys in a monster-of-the-week-stylee instead of following one case.
― milo z, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:00 (seventeen years ago)
i loved all the characters in this show, except maybe for dex.

And so I did. It just finished in the UK last week.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you look at it objectively, I suppose you could say that it seems obvious who the killer was, but the whole thing was so much fun and so kind of different that it didn't really matter.
― accentmonkey, Thursday, 27 September 2007 07:17 (seventeen years ago)
any news on series two?
― CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 13:44 (seventeen years ago)
The first few episodes leaked online (probably from a critic's screener) a month or two ago. Looks like the focus has shifted to the cops looking for Dexter (although they don't know it). And Dex has lost his killing mojo... Plus the ex-Marine cop (the one who intuits something's up with him) is not letting him out of sight.

just started watching this and am not sure how I feel about it; it certainly isn't up to, say, SFU or Sopranos (or even Weeds) standards; and there is something distancing about it. I guess this is the result of having a sociopath as your main character; it's not so much a 'problem' as 'the point', I guess. But I'm more annoyed by the boss character and his sister who are both annoying as all hell.
― akm, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

― Simon H., Tuesday, 29 January 2008 19:26 (seventeen years ago)
Ya, i got bored of SFU pretty quickly - but think I enjoyed the 2nd season of Dexter even more than the 1st. It's no Wire or anything but still easy to like imho.

Dexter is great. Especially season two. I've never been as thrilled/stressed about an episode of TV as I was during season 2, episode... I think 9. Amazing, amazing episode of a great show.

― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 21:18 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, I like this show, too. Michael C. Hall is great, his sister is good, Angel is also really good. Matsuda is great, too. Nothing too heavy or "dire" like SFU...just a good, sometimes action-filled, hour of television. Occasionally, with tits!
Now, you want to talk about lame Showtime series, lets discuss "Brotherhood"...what a shitty, shitty show.

Prolly for some language, for some of the gore, and for some content.
Not terribly, but probably similar to how much A&E had to edit the Sopranos

Also best opening credits sequence ever? It's so perfect for the show.

Anyone else watching season 3?
― Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Wednesday, 8 October 2008 07:35 (sixteen years ago)
Well I watched season 2 this summer even though I didnt really like season 1. But I had nothing else to watch. Anyways, season 2 wasa a bit better than se1, but that's faint praise. I probably wont watch it as it airs and may give it a go next summer if I hear good stuff about it.
― Jibe, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 08:07 (sixteen years ago)
yeah it's a fairly bodgy show, but I found the first two seasons engaging enough.
― wilter, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 08:10 (sixteen years ago)
Some bits I do find engaging too. For one I really like Michael C. Hall. But it's the whole that kind of bugs me. Everything that happens always seems a bit obvious and you usually see plot twists coming a few episodes before they actually do. Also, seeing as they got rid of Doakes, it doesnt feel like there's too much counterweight to Dexter. Even though I'm sure they'll find something.
― Jibe, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 08:16 (sixteen years ago)
like this show a lot - yes you do see plot twists coming a mile away but it's usually pretty funny and I really really like the Dexter character. Maybe that's a weakness though. I feel as if Dexter should be a bit more unlikeable than he is but he's not, not even when he was being a complete idiot last season with Lila and Doakes. mostly he just comes off as trying too hard.
the female characters on the other hand... ugh. They can't seem to write one who isn't irritating as fuck - Maria, Rita and Deb have grown on me but they still can be pretty annoying in their own ways. see also the IA chick who's currently hassling Deb.
― Disco/Very (Roz), Wednesday, 8 October 2008 08:45 (sixteen years ago)
Nobody in this show has any friends. Deb has to tell Dex about her sex life because she doesn't have any friends. It's as though they all live in a great microcosm.
― I'm Richard (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 24 November 2008 00:20 (sixteen years ago)
love this show immensely. esp opening sequence. puurffect.
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Saturday, 6 December 2008 14:50 (sixteen years ago)
Just caught up with the show this summer, tore through it pretty fast. Season 1 was probably the best, and season 2 was probably just a little bit less good, but Doakes' angle and, surprisingly, Lila, was pretty entertaining. Season 3 OTOH was just slightly above mediocre - I place the blame largely on Jimmy Smits for being so one-note, but even so, the writers didn't really come up with anything really compelling towards the end like they did for the first two seasons. I've definitely grown to like the cast a lot, though Hall and Benz were pretty excellent from the beginning.
Also, super lame DVD extra alert - on the last season 3 disc, instead of including cast interviews, they put on two episodes of The United States of Tara. They actually weren't bad, but you actually had to put the disc into a computer so it led you to a WEBSITE to watch a streaming flash clip of the interviews, lazily edited. Pff.
Definitely enjoy the show, but I almost can't believe they're managed to stretch the premise out to (now) a fourth season.
(and yes, it quite possibly is the best opening sequence ever)
― Nhex, Saturday, 5 September 2009 01:46 (fifteen years ago)
I haven't seen Season 3 yet ... it should be out on DVD soon. I loved the first two seasons ... I think I even cried a couple times.

I was surprised how much I liked Lithgow as a creepy killer, but could've used less naked scenes.
Right now I think I'd rank the first four seasons as 1 > 4 > 2 > 3
― stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 5 March 2012 22:16 (thirteen years ago)
Warning: it gets mildly shit then UNBELIEVABLY FUCKING TERRIBLE in the next two seasons. 1-4 are classic imo. I thought I'd have been all over this thread with my complete bewilderment at the direction this show took and the goodwill they spunked away, but I guess I vented elsewhere.

haha I just marathoned season 6 and am catching up on this season too. season 6 was absolutely terrible but this one has been surprisingly good so far. Love the killers this season - I always liked Yvonne Strahovski (who plays Hannah) when she was on Chuck, and the guy who plays Isaac is great.
Decided to catch up because someone told me Deb found out about Dexter, but looooool I hadn't realised they went for the whole incest angle (about two seasons too late imo but way to go, writers, for trolling all the Dex/Deb shippers). poor deb. still so very fucked up.

Anyone watching the last season? Was tempted to watch because of Charlotte Rampling, but really I can't be bothered.
― Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 4 August 2013 19:38 (eleven years ago)
I'm still on board, gotta see the conclusion, but this season hasn't grabbed me yet. The Rampling character is interesting, she knew Dexter's father and counseled him about "what to do with the boy," so that aspect is good. This season's long arc killer hasn't developed into much yet.
― nickn, Monday, 5 August 2013 05:43 (eleven years ago)
just finished S7. Couldn't get worse than S6 and I liked the angle they took (not the gangsters or fire guy because what was that) although the last few eps were back to usual 'is this finished yet'. I like how they've abandoned the idea of anyone doing any actual police work ever.
― kinder, Saturday, 31 August 2013 20:10 (eleven years ago)
Is anybody still watching this? I just read a review that called it the worst final season of TV ever.
I gave up awhile ago - but now I want to see it in a car crash kind of way.
― brio, Friday, 20 September 2013 18:42 (eleven years ago)
Not me. Gave up early last season when I realized literally the ONLY thing I enjoyed about it was ogling Dexter's crazy killer gardener girlfriend. The season before that with the "doomsday" plot was also basically some of the worst TV I've ever intentionally watched.
― Øystein, Friday, 20 September 2013 18:58 (eleven years ago)
halfway through doomsday was where i checked out, it was bad even before that but holy shit

I think much of the love that Michael Hall gained from 6 Feet Under has evaporated after 8 seasons of this garbage. How it has lasted this long I do not know.

wow people were not kidding about how bad that finale was. Holy shit, was it bad.
― Roz, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 11:26 (eleven years ago)
It didn’t help that I just watched a couple of episodes from season 1 on TV the other day, and it was already depressing to see how much the tone of the entire show had changed. Earlier seasons were a lot funnier, a lot darker and more cynical. Dexter felt like a proper anti-hero, as terrifying as the psychopaths he killed. What the actual fuck.
Anyway, anyone seriously considering taking on this show, stop at season 4. Really.

Sadly, there wasn't even much car crash quality to this season until the finale, it was very by-the-numbers before that. The first episode was promising but it got bad quickly. I liked Charlotte Rampling's character until the writers couldn't decide if she was supposed to show Dexter that he's good or that he's not good. The finale is where it gets ridiculous but only near the end. Watch just that if you want a laugh.
my curiosity remained (despite everything) until i heard she fell in love with her brother
I skipped the doomsday season but I read about this in a review and it was what got me intrigued in the show again! But they didn't do anything with it. This show needed to be more over-the-top if anything.

Dexter Producer: Showtime Wouldn’t Let Us Kill Dexter
The Dexter series finale enraged many fans for many reasons; chief among them was the fact that Dexter lived — and became a logger? — despite having driven his boat into a hurricane. "How about that finale?" said Dexter producer John Goldwyn at the NYFF premiere of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty this weekend, when we asked how the writers decided on that ending. "They won't let us kill him," he told us. "Showtime was very clear about that. When we told them the arc for the last season, they just said, 'Just to be clear, he's going to live.' There were a lot of endings discussed because it was a very interesting problem to solve, to bring it to a close. People have a relationship with Dexter, even if it doesn't have the size and the ferocity of the fan base for Breaking Bad. But it has a very core loyal following." Yes, and a mostly disappointed one.
