Anyone see the movie the one guy is in? Eagle vs. Shark or whatever? (I admit I'd written it off mentally as this year's cutesy indie movie.)

The show bit is great -- the strange thing is that some of the songs seem to work way LESS well than they do in their stage act. The "West End Girls" bit was terrific, but then the "Think, Think about It" song somehow missed, underplayed, or just skipped most of the punchlines from the way they perform it.

what was the second song last night? it was amazing.

(10,000 bonus points, though, for how well Jemaine's jacket matched the song.)

Yeah, I saw that. It's funny because when I initially saw the ads for the new show, I thought it was weird that they were advertising a comedy special. Then, last week tooling on-demand I discovered the series! I think the show is brilliant and different and I find it surprising that they were able to turn the stage show into such a perfect little sitcom concept. Muggers was best one so far!

Being New Zealanders makes it easier to do all the soul/rap homages (that second song taking from Marvin Gate) without any icky racial stuff.

Watching last night's episode, with the classic New York guys, I realized how much this show can work internationally as a foreigner's idea of what it'd be like to live in NYC.

that plus cutesy comedy collage marketing is really doing its best to turn me away from this show. which i'll probably like when i actually get around to checking it out.

I also love the ridiculous back-and-forth about the band's gigs. They're always having hypothetical arguments about the gigs, but they don't have any gigs.

Ha, I was actually thinking about how ILX would respond to this show and who would bring up "icky racial stuff" along those lines. The thing is, though, when they sing r&b it doesn't seem to be at all about black r&b -- if those songs belonged to anyone today, it seems like it'd be like John Mayer or James Blunt or something. Always feels like they're just going for "sensitive" pop music, and it's a whole other issue that super-popular music just happens to consist of white people already working in a black idiom.

That said, I do find them significantly less funny when they do rap or dancehall, though I think that's just a structural thing.

My favorite joke in all of these so far, apart from the ending shot joke of the mugging one, is the bit in the "I'm Not Crying" song where he's making a lasagna ... for one.

Re-watching this on dvd, I have been reminded of two things:

1. Todd Barry is very small.
2. Eugene Mirman, on the other hand, is quite large.

Rhys Darby's stand-up is a bit weird. He's a funny noises comedian, with a slightly frat-boyish persona.

Yeah, but still a kind of endearing dork.

Arj Barker is a kind of angry stoner stand-up.

Kristen Schaal's stand-up persona of a demented slut was a little disturbing, which is what I gather she was aiming at.

Eagle vs Shark is a pretty horrible film. Nothing sweet or charming about barely-functional, self-obsessed morons.

I realise the irony of writing that as a FoTC fan, but somehow the show pulls it off.

thought it was ok. there's plenty sweet and charming about the lead female role, lead male is a bit of a stretch in terms of 'looking for sympathy'. good performances from both though.

I found it to be a really queasy mix of misanthropic and sentimental, which is not to say there weren't one or two chuckles.

But you're right, I objected to him way more than here. His character was just a straight-up dickhead.

Their first show was on the BBC, but it didn't stop them taking the premise and some of the songs and scripts to HBO. HBO broadcast this last October and had it available to stream for months, but presumably they either own the entire thing or retained the audio rights, such that they can release it for sale or audio streaming now.

I just looked and it's back on HBO in fifteen days. So, out of seven months, there's, what, one (1) month's holdback where it came off HBO so they can try and sell it in a different format for a fortnight.
