Bytemark are pretty good, but the low-end plans are stingy on the disk and memory space. Amazingly competent and helpful, tho

stet, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 00:21 (sixteen years ago) link

no need for much disk space. i'll look into that, thanks!

does that matter though? it's not like you're going to visit them.

I never suggested using fasthosts, I suggested registering a domain with UKReg and you signed up for fasthosts, anyway I am with gnhosting because of 696 or whippet mangler or broxbourne leisure centre or whatever he is today, so you can blame him if it all goes wrong.

i use redfox they work

I'm afraid I know very little more about them than that

From a finding in google co uk having a uk host is slightly better

cheapest bytemark plan - 15 pounds a month?? too much for me

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:17 (sixteen years ago) link

six years pass...

i signed up to bytemark

it's pretty great, if you're an experienced sysadmin

if you're not, and someone hijacks your virtual machine to send spam, you get emails from bytemark saying "please fix this problem"

i need something a little more..... managed to host about 6 domains on. any suggestions?

eight years pass...

Looking for advice!

I never moved providers, and Bytemark got bought by iomart, and the customer service has suffered somewhat. it's still very much a "you are left to your own devices" service, like, you have a VM with Plesk installed and it's up to you to manage everything. which works... okay? except when it doesn't there's not any hands-on support. they do reply, but it's to send links to forum posts and a 'good luck'.

What I need:

- A place to host about 5 websites, two of them Wordpress
- A place to serve email - one business domain, the others personal/smaller projects

One of the slightly strange things about my setup is that the business domain's website is hosted externally on Wix but I still want to host the email, including webmail.

But I am open to people telling me I'm mad for hosting my own email and that I should use a standard commercial provider. Would totally consider that, particularly since email issues are what's giving me the most hassle these days i.e. dealing with blacklists, quirks of the server, making sure the certs work right together. That said I would love to avoid the tentacles of Big Tech.

ANYbody?

I host less than a handful of websites inc. Wordpress on Dreamhost, they do email and they claim to have support (live chat not phone) but I leave everything in their hands / do minimal maintenance through their web control panel.

a few years ago my hosts were bought out by names.co.uk
i was dreading it, but for my basic low tech wordpress set up it has been pretty much painfree.
i have had to reach out just the once, and the support was pretty good.
a friend of mine who has required them to help quite a bit said that they have always been very helpful.
no idea re the costings as i am on a very basic set up.

going to check out names.co.uk on your advice mark.

anybody else have any recommendations? friendly, helpful customer service a must!

clook have always been good for me - when I've had trouble, they've been helpful and I've never had a reason to move

woof, Monday, 21 March 2022 14:57 (two years ago) link

Thanks

I like their offer of free migration!

Tracer Hand, Monday, 21 March 2022 15:06 (two years ago) link

Quite low disk space on offer though - 40GB at the top end

names.co.uk will do 100-300GB for a similar price

Maybe worth a phone chat

Tracer Hand, Monday, 21 March 2022 15:25 (two years ago) link

Talked with them, they are very reasonable, will tack on 50GB for a bit more per month. The free migration is a godsend.

woof I can't thank you enough for your Clook recommendation. The few times I've had an issue e.g. email put on a block list, etc - they have responded instantly, and knowledgeably.
