Norman Rockwell - C or D?

Recently flipping through a book of his work, I realized how much I love his paintings. My parents had prints in every house when I was growing up and I never paid much attention, but as an adult, they resonate pretty strongly with me. What sez the ILX?

racist old codger with a heart of gold and a flair for inoffensive illustration projecting an exclusive and never-existent america for the welfare of the self-approving pseudo-lib.

(my parents have a bunch too)

"an exclusive and never-existent america"

Can we have a moratorium on this kind of talk at least until the people who actually lived during the time depicted in these paintings are no longer alive to swiftly and ably refute such groundless claims?

i dare you to find 3 Mexicans in NR paintings, excepting that self-conscious dribble he did for the UN.

oh wait, there's that one ruby bridges print.

Maybe he just didn't want to paint Mexicans.

Can we make this a S&D thread to avoid off topic political arguments?

Besides, it's pretty common knowledge that Rockwell was actually the opposite of a 'racist.' Hating on Rockwell is like hating on Fred Rogers or Winnie The Pooh, and just as boring.

he did a bunch of fairly powerful pictures depicting southern apartheid/the civil rights movement, IIRC.

Rockwell himself would later say of his change in subject matter: “For 47 years, I portrayed the best of all possible worlds – grandfathers, puppy dogs – things like that. That kind of stuff is dead now, and I think it’s about time.”
