Tuomas, Thursday, 5 July 2007 13:21 (seventeen years ago)

wow thanks for putting all of these songs in my head

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 5 July 2007 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

Hardest poll ever.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 5 July 2007 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

I cannot believe all the songs you left off of this.

HI DERE, Thursday, 5 July 2007 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

Oh wow. Dom OTM. Kudos Tuomas!

kv_nol, Thursday, 5 July 2007 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

Dan, make your own poll then!

kv_nol, Thursday, 5 July 2007 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

dan is kind of otm tho, i mean if you are going to include ace of base why are you including those particular choices and not the it's a beautiful life song? where is move this? and really my console is the better eiffel 65 song. i don't know, there are many questions here.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 5 July 2007 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

I think this might be the one genre that I dislike the most. However, I have an unbelievable weakness for the Vengaboys "We Like To Party".

joygoat, Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:03 (seventeen years ago)

"It's A Rainy Day" >>> "Think About The Way"

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:03 (seventeen years ago)

I think this might be the one genre that I dislike the most that I love the most

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

many of these are false EuroDance.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:07 (seventeen years ago)

I have voted for the best Eurodance single, not the best single or the best song.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

What the hell is "false Eurodance"? Okay, Moby is American, but that one song is pure Euro. Maybe I should've stuck to early nineties stuff though, and not include later, more ironic stuff like Aqua or Eiffel 65.

Tuomas, Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

The best Technotronic single isn't even there :(

I've got it down to 5: Eiffel 65, Shamen, 2 Unlimited, Urban Cookie Collective, Whigfield. Akshully I think I can lose Whigfield. So 1 from 4. I'm leaning very hard towards Urban Cookie Collective. I can't do this yet tho. I wanna sleep on it.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

Where is "XL" by Fluxland?!

Wait, was that known anywhere other than Canada?

Will M., Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

Never heard of that.

Tuomas, Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

or, apparently, "fluxland" by fluxland. That track was awsome and I had it on cassette on "Dance Mix USA '95," whatever the hell that was (to differentiate it from MuchMusic Canada's Dance Mix 95, I reckon).

It had, like... what sounded like a bunch of dudes in some sort of chorus singing "oh oh, o-whoa-oh oh-oh oh oh-oh oh oh oh!"

Ok, that makes no sense.

Will M., Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

that sounds like you're talking about kernkraft 400

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

naw, that's similar but different.

Will M., Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:22 (seventeen years ago)

Study aid.

Eazy, Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for Eiffel 65 :D

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

yeah it's a little more like "oh oh oh oh oh, o-whoa-ah oh oh-oh oh-oh"

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, the fluxland song was a little bit more, like, you know that beat that's like 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 / 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 ? Like that. Seriously, why do I even try to talk about music? Why did I give up piano when I was like 10? Oh wait I remember, my teacher was an alcoholic who didn't show up half the time.

Will M., Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

Missing contenders:
Sagat - "Fuck Dat"
Captain Hollywood - "More and More"
Robin S. - "Show Me Love" (is this Euro? Easy winner if it is.)

I'm voting for "No Limits".

Eazy, Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:28 (seventeen years ago)

that's kinda heavy, bro

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:28 (seventeen years ago)

I think that Eiffel 65 album was the first album I fell in love with :|

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:28 (seventeen years ago)

The one I am talknig about may or may not have also been a football chant at some point. Many random searches are pointing towards "Italian football chant."

It sounded like it could have been played over, say, "No Limit" by 2 Unlimited.

Will M., Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

hoyl shit! I found this:

fluxland - xl sample

Will M., Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

"Beautiful Life" would have gotten my vote, but "All That She Wants" is a workable proxy.

i love that song so much

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

i would vote for either wiggle it or my console and neither of these are options in this poll, some "authority" you are tuomas

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

Rednex: Cotton Eye Joe

I'm still perplexed by having to hear this at every Yankees game

how? why?

dmr, Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:52 (seventeen years ago)

they play basically every single song that has been mentioned on this thread at every yankees game, though.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 5 July 2007 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

hang on maybe I should go with "I LIKE TO CHEW IT CHEW IT"

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 5 July 2007 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

well yeah, true

was Cotton Eye Joe even a hit though? I think my first experience of it was some MLB douche dancing around in a straw hat.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 5 July 2007 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

for all this poll's gross oversights he at least included "max don't have sex with your ex" and shd therefore receive key to the city

impudent harlot, Thursday, 5 July 2007 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

The Power!

Chris in Belfast, Thursday, 5 July 2007 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

I love Eurodance in an unironically, since I grew up with it. But Aqua were by their own admission doing it in an ironic way. And I think Barbie Girl lacks the genuine emotion earlier, less ironic Eurodance had.

Scooter isn't Eurodance by the strict definition (it's rave/happy hardcore), and neither is Doop (that's house). Eurodance tunes are basically pop songs made for dancefloor, they have to have a sung chorus, most often verses too, and Eurorapping. Also, there's a definite sound to nineties Eurodance, which is why I chose songs that stretch the definition a bit (like Reel 2 Real or Cappella), but which have that sound.

Tuomas, Friday, 6 July 2007 08:13 (seventeen years ago)

2 Unlimited. There's no limit!

SeekAltRoute, Friday, 6 July 2007 08:30 (seventeen years ago)

Tuomas, the hung up thing was a joke.

Aqua were only saying that. They really meant it ;_;

kv_nol, Friday, 6 July 2007 08:31 (seventeen years ago)

4REAL

The Real Dirty Vicar, Friday, 6 July 2007 10:19 (seventeen years ago)

Can you feel it DV? Can you?

kv_nol, Friday, 6 July 2007 11:02 (seventeen years ago)

AWESOME also please note there must be a Wizard of Oz element to all of these songs/groups meaning PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE UGLY PRODUCER FUCKER BEHIND THE CURTAIN. I'm also not at all down with Shamen inclusion here.

I would like Army of Lovers 'Crucified' as a write-in too. Dan, I don't know if you'll love this idea or hate it but Nick Momus used to do a joke medley of that song and It's A Sin at gigs.

suzy, Friday, 6 July 2007 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

Urban Cookie Collective all the way.

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 6 July 2007 11:20 (seventeen years ago)

Shamen has done lots of stuff, but I thought those two songs are pretty much in the Eurodance mold, especially "L.S.I." which has female vocals on chorus and rapped verses. I was considering Army of Lovers too, but their sound and arrangements are quite different from typical Eurodance.

Tuomas, Friday, 6 July 2007 11:26 (seventeen years ago)

Yeahbut there was zero, zip, no CAMP ELEMENT to the Shamen AT ALL, which is ESSENTIAL in Eurodance and AoL has in spades. I'd be interested to know if you'd ever seen Shamen live because then it would make a lot more sense to you.

suzy, Friday, 6 July 2007 11:35 (seventeen years ago)

You don't think there's a camp element to "L.S.I."? Besides, a lot of these tunes don't have any inherent camp value, they're just dance music, if they're considered campy by some, then that value is added to them by people who think they're too cool for this sort of music. (Army of Lovers, on the other hand, were very consciously campy.) Anyway, campy dance music made in Europe isn't necessarily the same as Eurodance.

Tuomas, Friday, 6 July 2007 11:42 (seventeen years ago)

Wherefore art thou Tamperer featuring Maya?

NickB, Friday, 6 July 2007 11:44 (seventeen years ago)

Reel 2 Real feat. Mad Stuntman: I Like to Move It

Alan, Friday, 6 July 2007 11:44 (seventeen years ago)

AoL sound more like the eighties, in my opinion they lack the connection to the nineties Continental European club music that's essential to Eurodance.

Tuomas, Friday, 6 July 2007 11:44 (seventeen years ago)

Poor Blueski, he'd have loved this poll.

I LIKE TA MOVE IT MOVE IT
I LIKE TA MOVE IT MOVE IT
I LIKE TA MOVE IT MOVE IT
I LIKE TA !!MOVE IT!!

kv_nol, Friday, 6 July 2007 11:46 (seventeen years ago)

That Tamperer tune is pop house, I'd say.

What I'm trying to say here is that nineties Eurodance wasn't just any dance music made in Europe (though obviously it overlapped with other forms of club music) rather than a specific genre.

Tuomas, Friday, 6 July 2007 11:49 (seventeen years ago)

I wish I hadn't found out what Ya Kid K looks like now :(

http://www.yakidk.com

Why no Get Up by Technotronic? Ah well, I think Pump Up the Jam just edges it for me anyway.

Madchen, Friday, 6 July 2007 12:21 (seventeen years ago)

Also, there is a giant Blue Pearl-sized gap in the poll.

Also, if Ride On Time had been released a year later, it would have walked this, I suspect.

Madchen, Friday, 6 July 2007 12:24 (seventeen years ago)

I cannot believe Ride On Time was 18 years ago.

Madchen, Friday, 6 July 2007 12:25 (seventeen years ago)

i went for club bizarre, even though that's not the right answer. u96 had a really sinister edge to them.

the next grozart, Friday, 6 July 2007 12:37 (seventeen years ago)

Tuomas, your camp-blindness here is pretty Hongro, no offense (I've written articles for poncey magazines about this topic ooh say 15 years ago). Shamen NOT CAMP too interested in the ingestation of yage and all that Burroughs shit. On your list I vote for Rhythm Is A Dancer.

suzy, Friday, 6 July 2007 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

if Ride On Time had been released a year later, it would have walked this, I suspect.

Maybe a separate 1989-1992 dance poll?

Eazy, Friday, 6 July 2007 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

I mean "Ride On Time" would be right up against "Groove Is In The Heart" and "Hippiechick".

Eazy, Friday, 6 July 2007 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

where's DR JONES?????!?!?!?!?!?

ken c, Friday, 6 July 2007 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

E-Rotic: Max Don't Have Sex With Your Ex

max, Friday, 6 July 2007 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

altho in the song isnt max like choosing btw ex and the singer?

max, Friday, 6 July 2007 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

but the title is still the best advice ive received from a 90s eurodance act

max, Friday, 6 July 2007 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

besides Sin w/Sebastian of course

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 6 July 2007 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

there are a ton here, but if 'rhythm of the night' doesn't win, i'll be surprised. top three, at least.

the table is the table, Sunday, 8 July 2007 01:44 (seventeen years ago)

God I hate this kind of music :(

Trayce, Sunday, 8 July 2007 02:34 (seventeen years ago)

(but in fairness it is for reasons of unpleasant association in early 90s so I'm biased.

Trayce, Sunday, 8 July 2007 02:42 (seventeen years ago)

yeah Trayce, i think if you were a little kid during the early 90s (and REMEMBER these songs, which i somehow do!!), it's a lot easier to like them and remember them fondly. but i have no idea how old you are, so this could just be me.

the table is the table, Sunday, 8 July 2007 02:49 (seventeen years ago)

I'm 36 so I was in my early 20s when much of this stuff was around. At that point I was more into Pavement/SY/grunge/indie :|

Trayce, Sunday, 8 July 2007 02:58 (seventeen years ago)

RHYTHM IS A DANCER!!!

You should do a poll about the US-side of things... Crystal Waters' singles alone shit on everything listed here.

The Brainwasher, Sunday, 8 July 2007 03:23 (seventeen years ago)

but the title is still the best advice ive received from a 90s eurodance act

Better than "Billy Put a Condom on Your Willy"?

(If I remember correctly, Def Dames Dope also had a "use a condom" song. I guess some Eurodance artists felt they had to spread the knowledge, knowing that their main audience was teens.)

Tuomas, Sunday, 8 July 2007 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Sunday, 8 July 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I truly hate everything on that list apart from pump up the jam and the moby track.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 8 July 2007 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

Kudos

So the greatest "nineties Eurodance single" is from 1989. Hmmmm....

("Touch Me" by the 49ers was better anyway)
