"Since the War"

where the War in question is WW2.

will people basically keep on using this expression until everyone who can actually remember WW2 has died?

Jack Straw on C4 news used it this week. context: "public trust in politicians has been declining since the War". He was definitely talking abt WW2 not Iraq, the falklands or whatever.

why are ppl still using this ridiculous term? is 1945 or 1939 still regarded as such a great historical turning point? isn't there a certain incongruity when there have bn so many wars since WW2?

It would be interesting to know if "the War" is still used in this way in countries other than the uk.

In Europe, yes. Europe just hasn't been keeping up its end in the war business lately. You people are falling down on the job. You used to be the champs.

In the UK and on the continent the War did mark a major discontinuity with what had gone before. Maybe in some of Europe the end of the Cold War was a bigger discontinuity, maybe not.
