Are you scared of them (I am!) What's the biggest/best one you've ever been on? Do you keep yr eyes open or closed? Ever thrown up on one?

Personally I prefer 'The Ghost Train'...

Rollercoasters are WONDERFUL. I'm not sure what the best one I've been is; either Superman: Man Of Steel at Six Flags New England, the big marquee coaster at Six Flags Great America, or Space Mountain at Disneyland. I have the beginnings of plans to visit Kennywood, Cedar Park, King's Island, Universal Orlando, and Walt Disney World within the next ten years.

I think a trip to Alton Towers should be in order this year, who's with me?

chris, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I heart rollercoasters. I think the biggest one i've been on thus far is the wooden one at Six Flags, Giant I think? the best is the Judge Roy Scream. The first rollercoaster at Six Flags. nothing big or fancy just classic g-force fun.

Samantha, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I heart rollercoasters. My cousin said his friend was on a rollercoaster and a guy next to him threw up all over him. He got free clothes and could get five free rides.

WHEEEE i love them they are ACE and this is most unlike me. i fear getting into cars for chrissake. worst rollercoaster experience = going on the Blackpool Big One whilst v. hungover - the photo you get taken at the top of the ride showed the rest of my family, arms in the air, grinning like like loons, and me cowering, face in hands, crammed into a corner of the car (or as crammed as you can get with those restrainer things). best rollercoaster experience = all the other ones WHEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

katie, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Samantha the Judge Roy Scream YES!! No twists, no turns, no loops, no fancy gewgaws! Just drop after drop until your intestines come out your mouth. The sign when you finally reach the very top of its inital, anxiety-filled chinka-chinka-chinka lift reads "APPEAL DENIED"

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a complete wimp and always have been. The lurching movements of those things (even the moderate ones) make me feel unwell and somewhat fearful. I remember disliking children's roundabouts and swings for similar reasons.

David Inglesfield, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The ones where you dangle are truly cool. They're so different though. So much of the fun/loathing of coasters is the DREAD and anticipation when you see where the track is going and you're like "oh God no". You're on a runaway train with no one at the brakes. But the dangly ones (Six Flags over Texas has one now, the "Batman", with admirably entertaining waiting ramps), the dangly ones give you zero idea of what's happening next - since the track is above you - so every full twist or steep loop is totally unexpected and out of the blue. It kind of feels like you're flying. But not as a human - as an RC helicopter with the controls in the hands of a sadistic freak. * barely fights back urge to draw historical/cultural conclusions *

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you like the coasters, you should go to Cedar Point.

Kim, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't mind Rollercoasters, although really I am not the kind of person who would ever be in the vicinity of one (unless yr average pub starts getting in the things). However, I have a big fear of the upside-down ones _purely_ because I can't stand the idea of things falling out of my pockets. And my bag, where would I put my bag? I don't trust anyone else with it, all the badges would fall off, you bastards. So yeah, I'm happier just staying indoors, thanks.

emil.y, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the rickety old Cyclone at Coney Island. Once a week they'd run it backwards and forwards. I wonder if they still do that?

Arthur, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, I didn't know they did that! I do know that on the Cyclone you can stay in your seat after the ride's over and do it all AGAIN for a reduced price. (& I faintly remember tying this fact to some surely unfunny speculation here on David Beckham's stamina)

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never been on a rollercoaster, but a lot of people have vomited on me in the past and I didn't mind too much. Also I am not really scared of heights or speed or carnies, so I am going to say 'yes' to rollercoasters in the future.

rainy, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rollercoasters of the Future - what will they be like?

rainy, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rollercoasters=Classic! I love them all, including the upside down ones. The most sketchy rollercoaster I've ever been on was the 'Yankee Cannonball', which claims that it's the "oldest rollercoaster in the United States". Even the most slick new rollercoaster couldn't match the feeling of death emanating from this old pile of wooden sticks. "Wow, this ancient, rickety rollercoaster is going to break down while I'm on it!" Intense panic. Wonderful stuff.

geeta, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

life *is* a rollercoaster.

rener, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I too have been on the Big One - SHEESH the worst bit of it was it creaking and trundling it's way up right to the top of the biggest peak! Arrgh! If there had been a way to get off, I would, as I was absolutely PETRIFIED! The up and down bit was TOP LARKS though. The rollercoaster in Blackpool is TINY but very amusing. You can see the WOOD ROTTING. Yeah! The Black Hole is a rollercoaster but IN THE DARK, tis jerky and crap. Don't even bother. GO ON THE GRAVITY WHEEL INSTEAD! YAY FOR GRAVITY WHEELS!

I DO NOT like Rollercoasters!! My husband calls me the biggest chicken in the world. I will go on mine train coasters, but that is it. I have always been afraid of them and I don't know how to get over my fear. Anyone have any ideas?

Rumpie, Thursday, 21 April 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

I love Nemesis but I hate the falling feeling.

I would never go on Oblivion for that reason. I need to get over my fear of negative G's cause I love everything else about rollercoasters.

Rumpie, Thursday, 21 April 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

I guess I like them, but they're NEVER worth the waiting in line to get on. EVER!

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 21 April 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

I like to watch the rides. I'm normally the one who offers to hold everyones bags when they go on rollercoasters.

Rumpie, Thursday, 21 April 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

they make me sick, so no.

So, despite my love for coasters, I have mild acrophobia (that ironically, years of riding coasters helped ease), and falling from a coaster is a death I wouldn't want. I have to admit for me, the scariest part of the rollercoaster ride is not the ride itself, but the moment when I'm being strapped in. I'm always afraid of that Bart Simpson "that ain't good" moment, no matter how irrational and even minutely possible it would be for that to happen.

And then I read this article and....

http://thescoopblog.dallasnews.com/2013/07/arlington-police-fire-working-a-fatal-incident-at-six-flags-over-texas.html/

On Facebook, a woman who said she was next in line to ride the Texas Giant wrote that “the lady whose seat I was about to get into on the Giant wasn’t there when the red train came back!! Seriously! People in front row screaming when they came back that their mom was gone. We waited about 50 mins & now kids are freaking out.”

That is not just a tragedy, but a horror story. Fuuuuck.

Massive crack on Fury 325 at #Carowinds. I emailed the park and they told me, "The park’s maintenance team is conducting a thorough inspection and the ride will remain closed until repairs have been completed." Credit Jeremy Wagner pic.twitter.com/YrP0zhm3kJ

I just rode the “Top Thrill 2” coaster at Cedar Point two days ago. It might’ve been the most scared I’ve ever been in my entire life.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 3 June 2025 17:41 (seven months ago)

hell yeah!! I got to ride it twice a few weeks ago (though I was cold and grumpy so didn't fully enjoy it as much as I should have). It was excellent, much better than Kingda Ka which I assumed it'd be very similar to. Steel Vengeance still prob my fav coaster of all time tho, and Maverick in the top 5

I like them but don't know much about them and I almost never go to any parks! There's a pretty big theme + water park in my home down, I should try to go there next month.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Tuesday, 3 June 2025 18:26 (seven months ago)

which one??????

music for A★TEENS’ musicians (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 3 June 2025 18:29 (seven months ago)

Idk maybe it's not THAT big, but considering when I was little it was just a place where you could hand-feed actual deer in an enclosure and it had, like, 1 teacup ride for kids, it seems big to me now!

Went to Alton Towers many years ago and while in line for the then-new "Nemesis" we were nervously smoking and reading graffiti on the fencing. Someone had written "My brother died on this and no one will listen."

xp fyi I asked my coaster buds the best rides at Michigan's Adventure and was told:

1. Shivering Timbers
2. Shivering Timbers
3. Shivering Timbers

i only really go to Dollywood these days. my favourites there are Lightning Rod - a very fast, wooden coaster - and Wild Eagle, a coaster where you dangle your feet down.

apparently there's a new one called Big Bear Mountain which is the longest one in the park. Dollywood has really majored on rollercoasters lately - i think there's 9 in total.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 17 June 2025 15:01 (six months ago)

dollywood is probably the only theme park i would consent to go to if i was in the area. i like rollercoasters but the whole theme park experience is v heavily NOT WORTH IT for me.
