Dear Lovebug,
As a Father's Day gift I received a copy of something called Dad's Own Cookbook. Do you think I can actually learn something from this at this late stage in the game, or is this just a setup of a new trick for an old dog?
Sincerely, James Redd

Have beats gotten better with time, or just louder?
Yours Ned

Hi Ken:
Never heard of Dad's Own, it sounds vaguely British but Amazon identifies the author as a NY caterer. I think cooking is something one can master at any stage of life, unlike say, the pentathalon or particle physics. Are you already doing the cooking for yr family or are you an absolute beginner in the kitchen (who the book is aimed at apparently)? Anyway, give it a go. Mark Bittman's cookbooks are a great starting point too, authoritative and easy to follow. How To Cook Evereything is like the new Joy of Cooking in the Starski galley.
yr pal, lovebug
ps you are not an "old dog"

Hey Ned:
Good to hear from you, we haven't been on the same threads lately. Anyway since I coined the term hip-hop and was present at the creation of rap back in the boogie-down Bronx I am so partial to old school beatz that I can't really judge the new breed w/anything approaching objectivity. (I am an old dog). So better? I don't know but definitely louder if the car stereo that woke me at 3:00 AM today is any indication. And hey, congratulations on Marooned. Will read soon.
regards, lovebug startronic
ps: a couple noize d00ds thought for awhile I was the real DJ Starski!

Dear Lovebug, Thank you for the prompt and informative reply to my earlier question. My question for you this time is the following: if I go to the jazz club and stay around until after the very end and talk to the musicians, as well as their business managers, their personal assistants, their fellow expatriates from their native lands, etc (note: all this is usually only possible when Mrs. Redd and the little Reddettes are out of town)- does this make me some kind of wannabee hipster jazzbo poseur as described by Terry Southern?
Yours, JR

Hm, the self-absorbed navelgazing quality of that last post makes me feel like I did some kind of antipodal Freaky Friday switch with Trayce.

oh hell naw. cause remember "Murray" in Southern's short story adopted that jazz pianist (& his wife) in a condescending/liberal sort of way and where he got in trouble was deflecting their sexxule advances.
as long as you don't go any on picnics w/jazz musicians you're solid.
upon first reading "You're Too Hip Baby" I did feel shivers of embarrassed recognition. I also thought "every pop journo and music bizzer should read this" but the signif would've been lost on em.
