abortion funding? or NIJOLI in THE NATION

nijoli here. i wasn't sure where to post this but wanted to bring it up and see how you folks felt about the subject of abortion funding. Also, are there funds/clinics in your area?

i was thrilled that Katha Pollitt of the liberal magazine The Nation just wrote an article in support if my own non-profit abortion funding organization.

i am posting it below for bragging reasons.
----------------------------------------------------------

Of Groceries, Abortions, and Nice, Classic Handbags
by Katha Pollitt

I was planning to start this blog by writing about The New York Times Sunday Magazine's special issue on income inequality -- Larry Summers (him again!), John Edwards, class conflict on Fisher Island and much more. But a practical instance of what true poverty means was waiting for me in my inbox this morning, in the form of an email from Heather Robinson of the Equal Access Fund of Tennessee, which helps poor women pay for their abortions. Heather writes:

"I just received a very desperate plea from a local clinic for funding for a patient that I will be unable to help. Our fund has assisted 5 women this month and after giving this woman $200, we have depleted our funds without completely helping her at all."

"We need $400 more in order to pay the $850 fee of a 2nd trimester patient in Memphis who simply has to be seen this weekend, or she'll be too far along to be seen in the state of Tennessee. In that case, her fee will increase even more and have to pay the traveling expenses to another state, as well.

"She's raised $250 and we have given the clinic $200 on her behalf thus far. She's a single mom with a 12 month old and her abusive partner has dissapeared. She makes near $800 a month, which is too much to get any state aid. Her pregnancy is a result of birth control failure. She has an appointment at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow morning."

"Katha, can you help us?"

What a world of hurt is packed into this brief communication! And what a lesson in practical economics. This woman's wages of around $800 a month after taxes put her over the limit for TennCare, the state's medical program-- while leaving her not even close to being able to pay for her abortion herself. (Tenncare doesn't pay for abortion, but it would pay for some of the associated costs included in the fee.) Yet this same $800-- a month's expenses for this woman and her child, or the price of her reproductive freedom -- is less than the amount Gabby, one of the Los Angeles teenagers whose views on money are featured in the Times, thinks is reasonable to spend on a purse ('If you want a really nice, classic bag, it's definitely appropriate to spend, like, four digits, because that's something that's really nice").

$800 is about $200 more than the Equal Access Fund has to give out each month to women in need-- money raised dollar by dollar through donations, eBay garage sales and fundraisers. Fortunately, as I've been writing this, Heather e mailed me to say that the $400 this woman still needs has been raised thanks to donations that came in through her e mail. But what about the next woman and the ones after that? $800 doesn't go very far -- it won't even let Gabby accessorize her outfit.

How wonderful it would be if everyone reading this story sent the Fund a donation. Just go to Paypal, and send equalaccessf✧✧✧@gm✧✧✧.c✧✧ whatever you can spare: the price of a latte or a copy of the Sunday Times or a (big) bag of chips or a beer or a movie ticket (Or, of course, for you lucky loaded few, a handbag!). I should mention that the Fund is an all-volunteer organization, so every dollar you send will go to patient care. And it's affiliated with the National Network of Abortion Funds, so it's tax-deductible and you know it's well-run.

You can write Heather Robinson at heat✧✧✧@equalaccessf✧✧✧.o✧✧ or you can check out the fund's myspace page at www.myspace.com/equalaccessfund.

Check out NNAF at www.nnaf.org, and while you are there, browse and see if there's a local fund in your area. Chances are, they definitely could use your help.

And Another Thing is Katha Pollitt's blog--like her "Subject to Debate" column, only shorter, more frequent and (hmmm...) unedited. Topics: politics, feminism, culture, books, daily life

Thanks for reading it and supporting the abortion fund.

The doctor who delivered me decades ago is still, I think, performing abortions. He gets protesters outside his office.

Last week one of the letters the editors of the paper said that one of the horrible things about abortion is those millions of unbaptized babies stuck in Limbo. Uh, okay.

tokyo rosemary, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah someone needs to get up to date on their catechism. I'm sure those babies are all in hell.

Laurel, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

oh my - those "limbo babies"! what a hilariously bizarre thing to be worried about!

ni jo leeeeeee, Monday, 9 July 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

They just need to do abortions w/holy water syringes, hello.

No sorry to be so glib. It's FUNNY and awesome coincidence: I was just thinking how I'd like to donate to a cause just like this! All I could think of was Planned Parenthood, who actually did not much at all for me when I was in that situation. and I thought (15 minutes ago), 'Once I get on the internet, I'll see if there's some reputable charity doing that.' And there IS! Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention & working to help the cause! :D

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks for the thoughts despite the financial crunch.

I was mainly just bragging about being in The Nation, but the donation and support as been a nice bonus for the preg and broke population.

ni jo leeeeeee, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

I'm definitely in support of that. I would love to work in a clinic but I think my current career has taken me to off-course for that.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

Ah. I worked as director of an AB clinic for years with my sister, Roxymuxak. It is the work I have been proudest of and what led me to want to do a funding org in my spare time. Turning abortion seeking women away because they are poor and can't afford the surgery is the hardest thing I have ever had to do and I hope the clinics I serve can do that less and less.

ROXY and i will be working this fundraiser and after looking at all the junk we have collected, I think we could use some more.

Equal Acccess Fund (www.myspace.com/equalaccessfund) is having a huge garage sale fundraiser on Oct. 13th, Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the corner of Fairmont and Broadway.

We could use your donations of old shit you don't use anymore that people who frequent yard sales would buy:

books, dvds, cds , vhs, old kitchen gadgets, your old boxers, tees, purses, scarves, christmas gifts you hated, toys ,mixed nuts

what have you got?

yeah. obviously great news but i kinda hope it isn't celebrated too loudly, like it's an acceptable battleground or cause for jubilation, rather than a straightforward matter of justice.

What staggers me is these priveledged white male fucks saying things like banning abortions/abortion funding "protects women", I mean wtf, what kind of universe do these cnuts live in? It makes me sick.

“this dog won’t hunt” doesn’t appear in the Book of Proverbs (Trayce), Saturday, 11 June 2011 06:37 (fourteen years ago)

i know it isn't crucial that someone swoops in to point out that the above isn't just a guy thing, but:

“This is about respecting women,” said Rep. Ruth Samuelson, a Charlotte Republican who sponsored the bill. “This bill keeps abortion legal. It keeps abortion safe. And, by golly, we know it helps make it more rare. It is still her choice. It makes it her informed choice.”

i think it's more just an attempt to link 'control', and the general principle of being well informed - like you're buying a mortgage & you should really check out all the options & read the smallprint before proceeding - with a woman's decision-making process, and therefore earn a few more days of head-time in a CPC room trying to deter people face to face with graphic distractions.
