I imagine I am probably forgetting several movies I've never heard of/seen...

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 9 July 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

2LBT is a race not a chase

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 July 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

You forgot Brewster McCloud! But it's forgiven. (Stupid Warner Bros.)

C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 9 July 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

...and I guess The french Connection doesn't count since it's a car/train chase.

C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 9 July 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

I've been trying to find a rental DVD of Brewster McCloud for some time now and still haven't seen it :(

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 9 July 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

my qualifiers for this poll were mostly that the movie must take place primarily on the road, with the car/drivers as the central plot focus

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 9 July 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

I've been trying to find a rental DVD of Brewster McCloud for some time now and still haven't seen it :(

...cause there isn't one! Hence the "stupid Warner bros.". It's been out on laser disc though.

C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 9 July 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

... and the VHS copies I've found for rent have been totally worn-out/unwatchable.

I am annoyed that large chunks of Altman's catalog do not seem to be on DVD.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 9 July 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

I guess Smokey and the Bandit is more watchable, but I'm going with Death Race 2000 for the awesome awkward sex scene in the night between the days of racing, and because of the Stallone factor.

milo z, Monday, 9 July 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

I'm surprised there haven't been any "I can't believe you forgot ________" posts, surely there's more...

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

anyway I suspect Two-Lane Blacktop will win but all love for Dennis Wilson aside I prefer Vanishing Point

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

I have only seen Vanishing Point, it was pretty alright

Jordan, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

I'm surprised there haven't been any "I can't believe you forgot ________" posts, surely there's more...

Okay then:

Gumball Rally
Gone In 60 Seconds
Smokey and the Bandit 2
Cannonball Run

everything, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

..not forgeting mention Duel, Race With The Devil and Mad Max.

everything, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

and Grand Theft Auto.

everything, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

most of those aren't from the 70s... plus Duel was strictly TV-movie, right...?

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

good call on Gumball Rally tho, I've never seen that

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

They are all from the 70's except Smokey 2 - 1980 and Cannonball Run (1981).

everything, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

haha wow I had no idea Nicholas Cage's "Gone in 60 Seconds" was a remake!

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

Being 7 years old in 1975 I saw most of these first time around - this was the principle genre of interest for my friends and I, along with the works of Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill and James Bond films. Star Wars changed that a bit.

The original Gone In 60 Seconds was the ultimate movie ever made for us at the time. I recall spending a summer "playing" Gone In 60 Seconds.

everything, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

Longest Yard?

Bill Magill, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

Jeez, how did I forget Cannonball? Two Carradines!

everything, Monday, 9 July 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

Le Mans

dan m, Monday, 9 July 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

Hooper is another good one as it is a car chase movie about guys making car chase movies.

Of course you could just name about every Burt Reynolds movie, as there are also big car chases all over White Lightning and Gator.

Then you also have the Sam Pekinpaugh epic Convoy which fits into this genre somehow.

earlnash, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah, you also might could include Spielburg's first movie Duel, which is Dennis Weaver being chased down by a mad semi driver for 90 minutes.

earlnash, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

For shame! How could you forget The Driver? 1978, dir by Walter Hill, Ryan O'Neal as "The Driver", Bruce Dern as "The Detective", Isabelle Adjani as "The Player", Ronee Blakley as "The Connection". Just so damn cool!

ExtensionsOff, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

Smokey and GoodFellas are the only movies I regularly quote lines from.

too bad bullitt is 60s.

calling two-lane blacktop a car-chase movie is like calling l'avventura a suspense thriller.

Edward III, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 02:18 (eighteen years ago)

I wouldn't even say it's a race, it's more like a prolonged mental breakdown.

Edward III, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

Freebie & the Bean, COME ON!

Dr. Superman, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 06:36 (eighteen years ago)

Death Race 2000 for me, which had more social commentary than i expected

kingfish, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 06:46 (eighteen years ago)

The Hunter, available for a dollar or two at any Walgreen's.

Eazy, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 07:09 (eighteen years ago)

Le Mans

Unbelievably OTM.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 08:23 (eighteen years ago)

The Seven-Ups = 70s version of Bullitt

And yeah, The Driver really needs to be on this list.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 08:24 (eighteen years ago)

plus Duel was strictly TV-movie, right...?

Not exactly. It got a theatrical release in Europe.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 08:26 (eighteen years ago)

This movie also needs to be listed: http://www.rendezvousdvd.com/

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 08:28 (eighteen years ago)

All of you are wrong. You must look to England.
Luckily some blogger has put the record straight because I was in despair at not being able to find photographic evidence of this marvel. I give you, the
the car chase from Confessions of a Driving Instructor.

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 08:34 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, there's a lot that's missing from this list, need to add:

The Mechanic
The Car (Satan IS a car!)
Corvette Summer
THX 1138
Highway Racer
Race With The Devil
Crash!
The Destructors
Big Guns (lots of 70s Eurocars in this: Citroens, BMWs)
The California Kid
Speedtrap
What's Up Doc?
The Cars That Ate Paris
Cleopatra Jones (the ubiquitous chase down the LA River)
Shaft's Big Score

most of the 70s James Bond movies had pretty good car chases too.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 08:48 (eighteen years ago)

most of the 70s James Bond movies had pretty good car chases too.

And great boat chases in the case of Let and Let Die iirc.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

wtf THX 113 is a sci-fi film. Cleopatra Jones and Shaft's Big Score are blaxploitation films. Film with car chase /= car film.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

vanishing point is devastating and made me think u_u

Besides, you didn't even know that Gone In 60 Seconds was a remake. What kind of car movie fan are you? Come back after you've seen Gumball Rally then I'll take you seriously.

This poll desperately needs to be redone.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 6 December 2013 23:11 (twelve years ago)

Continue to be puzzled over the general antipathy towards The Sugarland Express.

clemenza, Saturday, 7 December 2013 00:05 (twelve years ago)

jesus how muddled were the terms defined here? car-chase films includes some films w/o car chases but disqualifies some w/ car chases. anyhow would've voted the seven ups if it had been included, maybe my all time fave car chase -

four years pass...

Puppet on a Chain has a pretty entertaining boat chase

also watched The 7 Ups last night, I'd never heard of it until YT recommended it to me. Liked it, car chase was okay but not the highlight.
