Teletext (gleefully luddite retro forerunner to the internet) works much the same way. According to a girl I knew once who wrote news articles for Ceefax, not only do rigid para structures need to be kept to but also number of words/ characters, as the templates they use are ultra rigid.
Knowing this, teletext news assumes a haiku like aspect.
