I'm always torn by the idea of charity. On the one hand, I care about people, I see that they're not getting the help they need, and want to contribute in some way. But on the other, charity has traditionally been a force for maintaining the status quo, allowing government to escape its responsibilities and being generally anti-revolutionary.

emil.y, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

but only you see that. all those saps giving money charity would, of course, be storming the barricades but they've been duped by the charities into expending all their energy in that direction.

I haven't given a cent.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

i gave $75, which adds up to infinity percent

abanana, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

My parents gave me money earlier this year, so their liberal impulses were assuaged.

I gave to tithing for years & years (10 per, before taxes even), and now that I'm starving and srsly having to go to the food bank sometimes, I figure I've done my part while I could & I'll pick it up in the future once I have the ability.

Abbott, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

Before taxes? Fool!

ledge, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

Well, my dad was the church accountant & he felt that was the right way to do it, and he got to see my tithing statements. And damn, when you're working at Taco Bell, that +taxes bit really eats up your check.

Abbott, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

A few hundred dollars a year, so probably 1-3%. Sometimes it seems like a stretch to consider WFMU a charity, but there you go.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

I used to give more time than $, recording for the blind/2nd harvest/big sisters, but now I have less time and more $, so that's what I give. Though the most fun thing I did was cooking for the blogathon 2 years ago, which raised $, then having a bake sale of all the stuff I made the next day, which raised even more $, all donated to Heifer.

Jaq, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

charity is the fucking burden of the rich.

Dandy Don Weiner, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 02:23 (eighteen years ago)

Dude, WFMU is a great thing to contribute to.

Abbott, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 02:25 (eighteen years ago)

Oh I agree, it just doesn't feed the hungry or anything.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

Can you have a negative amount then, for those of us who take money from charities by working for them?

Wow, that sounds very generous. What do they do with the money?

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 09:56 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know the exact percent, but I have a direct debit to An Charity - well, basically to assuage me of my guilt of not giving to beggars, and well, first world, middle class guilt.

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 10:12 (eighteen years ago)

I used to give to Shelter so I wouldn't feel guilty about not giving money to beggars. And Oxfam & Amnesty International, but we've been pretty broke lately so I cancelled the direct debits a while back. If financial circumstances changed I'd probably start them up again.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 11:24 (eighteen years ago)

npr, barack obama, a couple of animal related charities and taral get my money. I used to give to the united negro college fund and the national hispanic scholarship. Should start that again.

Not much volunteering lately mostly due to transportation issues. But I plan on getting involved with a minority college student mentoring program soon, have volunteered my web skills to a another such program and am thinking of working every other Saturday in a free spay/neuter animal clinic. I will be the next Bob Barker.

For me donating money is something to do when I can't volunteer time which I think is probably more important.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

not sure about money wise but time wise I contribute about 4 or 5 weeks a year on aggregate.

Ed, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

I am too lazy and misanthropic to donate time, so I try to assuage my guilt with cash.

ledge, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

About £150, but that's still less than 1%.

Madchen, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

I live in NY, I am a charity.

I'm thinking about volunteering with nPower again. It was a fun, techie way to get involved with organizations, and a really welcome service. I chose projects that were way different from my daily work, so it never got too tedious.
