F***. I bought a Blackberry as 'Open Box' (no returns) from J$R in New York and just discovered that the sim card connector piece is missing, rending it inoperable.

I like when they're at least obviously broken on the shelves. Like the stereo I was checking out that wouldn't open its CD or cassette compartments.

i bought my last laptop this way, it ended up only having 15GB of hard drive space, not the 80 GB as printed on the box.

so dont do it

there was a good story around here about a couple who bought a CRT monitor and then when they got it home it was an institutional-sized can of corn or something like that.

WAHT? If it's open box, aren't the items usually displayed outside the box?

A former roommate bought a gigantic projection TV open-box. Best Buy knocked off about $1500 due to a small scratch on the case, but it worked fine for years. I'm pretty sure she tried it out in the store first though.

I would look into the consumer rights laws of NY - I know that in some places you can't sell things 'as-is' or 'open box' when they're actually completely fucked without stating that they're inoperable.

"J&R stands behind our Open Box products with a 30-day, no-hassle return policy. If you are not satisfied with your purchase, you can return the product within 30 days and we will issue you a refund for the full amount of the merchandise."

Anyone who lives within shooting distance of a Fry's knows that open-box == 100% waste of money.

120G SATA = $100. PATA isn't too far off.
