Explosion rocks midtown Manhattan Wed Jul 18, 2007 6:22PM EDT
NEW YORK (Reuters) - An explosion rocked midtown Manhattan on Wednesday, creating a huge plume of smoke and sending pedestrians fleeing from the scene, a Reuters eyewitness said.
New York City police said the explosion did not look suspicious and ABC-TV reported that it was as a transformer explosion.

So all the power in my building at 46th and Park flickered out for a second, computers restarted, and then the fire alarm went off and we were evacuated. I walked to 7th Ave to get the train home as GCT was closed. Home now. That is all.

Wow, that's my video on Gothamist!
This was really frightening at first--we looked down from our office windows at people running down the street doing the Indiana Jones lookback.
Initially it seemed like something had blown up at Grand Central--a friend who saw it happen said people abandoned their cars and ran through the streets screaming.

I was having early dinner with my mom and the fried squash blossom appetizer had just arrived when a woman ran into the restaurant screaming "there was an explosion at Grand Central!!!" and everybody panicked but I pulled up this thread on my Treo and showed everyone that "New York City police said the explosion did not look suspicious" and dinner returned to normal. Thanks, ILX!

Someone literally ran in screaming?
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 19 July 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)
Literally. At first she was too out of breath to say anything, and I wondered why she had run so hard just for some Italian food, but then she started the screaming.
