I have questions:
* How long should one plan to prepare to take the GRE before taking it?
* Theoretically, could a tattoo artist go over my tattoo to sharpen the lines and brighten up the color?
― n/a, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)
I just posted to the old thread because I wanted to tell you guys something but did not want it to be in the first 5 posts of new thread.
― La Lechera, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)
Mornin' Chicago. I'm not tattoo expert N1ck, but I've had a couple friends get their tattoos brightened up. Not sure of the process though.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:38 (eighteen years ago)
Hi Chicago. I'd like to live in you, zitty summer notwithstanding. However, my husband had to go and start a business in Austin TX. (I always put TX in as if people are gonna think of another Austin instead)
― earthbound misfit, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:45 (eighteen years ago)
Hello, earthbound. Have you been around ILX before?
Sra Lechera, you are still in the first five posts! Anywho, it turns out a ton of people I knew were at Pitchfork. They just didn't try calling me. OTOH, I didn't try calling anyone else either. I just expect people to come to me I guess, to flock to me and my blanket.
I am tired. The dueling pianos at H0wl@ the m00n were entertaining.
― KitCat, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)
Hi KitCat! I just posted for the first time today but I've been lurking for a couple of months off and on.
― earthbound misfit, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)
oh jesus, jeff. You're as bad as jesse. I don't mind a thread that's gross to everyone else because it's about sex and embarrasses people (OH NOES!), but zits are on the short list with warts and hare lips of things that I DO NOT NEED.

more than theoretically, it's one of the things tattoo artists do

A little while ago, Noon o Kebab got referenced in the Chicago Restaurants thread (I think Toby and Colette were looking for a Persian place). Katie, Matt, and I tried it last night and man oh man... best meal I've had in a while.
I like the thread title.

However, I hate the bbcode.
Word.
― KitCat, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)
Who does that 'Suicidal' song that's over the chords to Stand By Me? I can't tell if I like or hate that song.
― Jordan, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)
I don't know who does it but I know I hate it.
― n/a, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)
It's called "Beautiful Girls" by Sean Kingston. I hate it, but parts are growing on me after repeated exposures.

Jesse, I finally got around to watching Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf last night. There is some hilarious shit in that movie.

Even bitter, angry alcoholics who are soaked in liquor down to their very last cell can have a few laughs.
― kenan, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)
That's the lesson of the play, I think.
― kenan, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)
We went to this dueling pianos thing with Sarah's work last night where you could request songs for them to play. Everyone kept insisting you could request whatever you wanted and they would play it. I could have been an asshole and requested something superobscure, but instead I chose "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath. They did not play my request! But instead, they played a pretty bitchin' version of "Crazy Train," which I think was a reasonable replacement.
― n/a, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)
Dr. Morbius, what game are you looking for?
― Jeff, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)
I am not in favor of the dueling pianos trend.
― Jordan, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)
Monday the 30th, Jeff (6pm start). The Cub site only has single seats upstairs left, but if I can't get in any other way I spose I'd cough up $42! for my first bleacher seat.
― Dr Morbius, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)
Jordan, you and Dan should start a Dueling Drummers show in a bar.

I think the GRE prep time is pretty variable. I'd go out and buy yourself a book and cd and start working through it. When I did it, I think I put aside an hour or two after work to study. Once I was scoring in the ballpark of what I wanted, I signed up for the test. Start to finish it probably took me a couple of months, but I also tend to overprepare out of fear.
― sisut, Thursday, 19 July 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)
I have this sneaking suspicion that Jordan would kick my ass in a drum duel!
That said, I'm a big fan of the Fugazi dual-drum stuff, and some friends of mine pull it off pretty well in their band: http://www.myspace.com/sah
― dan m, Thursday, 19 July 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

The cornhole.
Oh I bet there's some real assholes in that.
― dan m, Thursday, 19 July 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, it's pretty tasteful and tight on the Argument, almost to the point that it's unnecessary??
I haven't seen many two-drumset bands that I really like, but love situations where the parts are split up between multiple drummers (brass band obv., salsa, African shit, etc.).
― Jordan, Thursday, 19 July 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)
I kind of want to sign up for the social/first-time division of cornhole but I'd want to practice first. I've only ever played once.
― n/a, Thursday, 19 July 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)
I saw Ibrahim Ferrer a few years ago, and his band had the block guy, the castanet guy, the ribbed-seashell guy, etc.
― Eazy, Thursday, 19 July 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)
I'd just wing it. I'd get a little drunk first though. Works for darts.
― Jeff, Thursday, 19 July 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)
Couple of months, maybe? I don't remember studying all *that* much, and though I didn't do as well as I'd have liked, I don't think studying more would have boosted my score.
Of course, I took it in 2000, so my statute of limitations is up, I think, if I actually want to apply to grad school again.
― jaymc, Thursday, 19 July 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)
For anyone watching the news this evening, Leaf & I are okay. We are checking in with friends & have heard back from most of them (thankfully). Right now we're still in a state of shock over the collapse of the 35W bridge. Life is so precious. I nearly ran an errand after work that would have taken me over the bridge that collapsed right at the time of the collapse. Thankfully I just headed straight home to work on the vegetable lasagna I told Leaf I would make us for dinner. Our hearts go out to those who are helping at the scene. We may try to donate blood tomorrow, but it's unlikely that we'll be able to since we were in China within the past year.
― Jeff, Thursday, 2 August 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, that shit was shocking. I just heard about it this morning.
― kenan, Thursday, 2 August 2007 13:58 (eighteen years ago)
A friend of mine, matttt & Katie's apparently drove over 1.5 hours beforehand. He crosses the bridge at least twice a day.
― dan m, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)
Thanks Nick & Jeff. Leaf & I are fine - it's so scary though. If I had run the errand I was planning on running after work, I would've gone right over that bridge b/c it's right next to my office!
Now we're just checking in with friends & co-workers . . .
― sweet tater, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)
Still haven't heard back from my friends there, but I haven't heard anything bad through the grapevine either...
― Jordan, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)
I was having dinner with some folks and got a text-message from Kelsey saying "L&I are OK" before I heard anything and I was like oh no what happened in Mpls.?
Somewhere I read that the bridge had been closed down to a single lane on either side for construction, luckily.
― Eazy, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)
Ok, sounds like my peoples' friends/families are safe.
― Jordan, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)
having that money go into a fund that pays the penalties that they will incur for breakin' the law, breakin' the law.
regulars at my local were talking about doing the same, assuming the penalty stayed $100-$500.

that reminds me, what will marshall mcgearty's do? doesn't rj reynolds underwrite them or are they a subsidiary or something?
― chicago kevin, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)
Btw, I can't remember the proper names of the Korean dishes I had last night, but it involved:
-marinated beef, rice, and lettuce as main dishes/conduits for sides
-pickled cucumber & radishes
-kimchi
-dried seaweed things
-black beans that were pickled or fermented or something
-little rice cake things for dessert
― Jordan, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)
That sounds awesome. I am kind of obsessed with the idea of kimchi, though I almost never eat it.
― n/a, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

― Eazy, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)
I love kimchi.
― Jeff, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, it was pretty awesome. She cooked the kimchi because she thought the smell of the raw stuff might gross me out.
― Jordan, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)
Kimchi, a staple of Korean cuisine, is believed to be a healthy food with many nutritional benefits. This claim is being disputed by emerging research, however, which indicates that fermented foods such as miso and kimchi may cause gastric cancer [1].
---
Kimchi has been cited by Health Magazine as one of the world’s five “healthiest foods,” for being rich in vitamins, aiding digestion, and perhaps even preventing cancer.[8]
I think maybe I should pickle the carrots we got yesterday.

I want a burrito from El Cid. I do not want the stupid cheese sandwich I made for lunch today.
― n/a, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)
the lodge and the lounge on milwaukee ave are two different things though, you have to be 21 to enter the lounge (with it's 44' burled walnut bar and leather club chairs that they are oh so proud of) but can enter the lodge if you're 18.
xpost- i would kill for a cheese sandwich.
― chicago kevin, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)
Maybe Kevin can go get Nick a burrito, then Nick can pay him pack and tip with a cheese sandwich for his troubles. Burrito delivery guy.

HOW FAR FROM THE UK VILLAGE ARE YOU NICK????
― chicago kevin, Thursday, 2 August 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)
If Kevin wants to deliver an El Cid burrito to Evanston by noon, I will gladly pay him and give him my cheese sandwich.
So I'm sure this is old news for most of you, but I hadn't actually watched it yet - the Kanye West video starring Zach Galifinakis and Will Oldham? Masterful: http://www.kanyewest.com/?content=video_cant_tell_alt (audio NSFW, has a "motherfuckers" in there somehwere)
― n/a, Thursday, 2 August 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)
i can get an el cid burrito to evanston by noon but i can not guarantee i can get a hot (or even warm) el cid burrito to evanston by noon.
― chicago kevin, Thursday, 2 August 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

THERE'S SOMETHING IN MY PANTS!!!!
also, i've been at the marshall mcgearty's website for about 15 minutes now and i don't know how i'm going to go to reckless without stopping by and picking up a pack of the somkes they roll on site. especially the one that's a blend of brazilian leaf, malawi burley leaf, annise, & currants. sounds tasty!
― chicago kevin, Thursday, 2 August 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)
That song does suck.
― Jeff, Thursday, 2 August 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)
I like the song with that video over it. They work well together.
I would feel bad if Kevin brought me a burrito. I should just eat this stupid cheese sandwich. Stupid.
― n/a, Thursday, 2 August 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

― n/a, Thursday, 2 August 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)
ok, if i'm not going to el cid i suppose i should just go to the grocery store. maybe i'll splurge on some cheese. i wish i could type that without giggling but if i haven't grown up by now i guess i never will.
― chicago kevin, Thursday, 2 August 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

― chicago kevin, Thursday, 2 August 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, I've been there a few times. Decent food and drink -- typically sort-of-high prices other than weekday happy-hour deals. They've got a nice outdoor area. And big enough that even on weekend nights it's not packed.
― Eazy, Thursday, 2 August 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)
