SPRINGVILLE, Calif. -- Actor Ned Beatty, best known for his role as rape victim Bobby Trippe in 1972's Deliverance, died today at age 71.

Beatty appeared in over 100 films, and is recognized for his appearances as Delbert Reese, a Tennessee lawyer and husband of Lily Tomlin in Robert Altman's Nashville (1975), Lex Luthor's henchman Otis in Superman (1978), Rudy Reuttiger's father in the 1993 biopic Rudy and as a member of the cast of the television police drama Homicide: Life on the Street. He also had a recurring role on the hit television show Roseanne.

Beatty was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Network (1976). He has also been nominated for two Emmy Awards and one Golden Globe Award. In March of 2006, Beatty received the RiverRun International Film Festival's "Master of Cinema" award.

Funeral services will be held in Los Angeles, California at St. James Anglican Church. A date has yet to be announced.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

Unsurprised that his role in Deliverance was not mentioned.

First famous Ned I ever heard about, so you can bet he was a hero. Seeing his name arc across the screen when I first saw Superman = rock. RIP and thanks for it all, sir.

libcrypt, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

bummer, he was great on Homicide. I honestly did a doubletake and wasn't sure if this was a thread revival and that he'd actually already died like 2 years ago, though.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

O NOES! RIP

bummer, he was great on Homicide.

Yeah, Homicide was when I figured out who he was, and I always wished he did more post-Homicide work.

David R., Thursday, 19 July 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

you had a miserable childhood if you did not know his fine turn as "otis" in "superman," dave.

hstencil, Thursday, 19 July 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

I saw Supes as a kid, but I didn't know who the actor was!

David R., Thursday, 19 July 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

life was rough in those pre-imdb days, i remember.

hstencil, Thursday, 19 July 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

aw, i'm sad now. i love him.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 July 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

my great appreciation for this man came way too late in life. better late than never, though. RIP.

the dean in Back to School

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 July 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

watched this recently. not the greatest movie in the world, but he was so good in it. plus, it was just nice to see him in a starring role. it's more like a play actually:

scott seward, Thursday, 19 July 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, like stence said, I think most people my age first got to know Ned Beatty in the role of Otis. As I got older, I discovered he was one of the most likeable character actors this side of J.T. Walsh.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 July 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

also anybody got a link to the story? can't find anything anywhere.

hstencil, Thursday, 19 July 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

Shit, Back to School-great call. RIP

We should randomly revive those silly birthday threads like this. I wonder how many cold, empty "HB!"s you'd see before someone caught on.

didn't remember Deliverance was his first film.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 19 July 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

TS: people who skip new answers and keep well-wishing on hoax threads after the hoax is discussed make it a) funnier b) more offensive/depressing

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 19 July 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I really wish someone would mod-fix the thread title at this point.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 July 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

agreed. eaten my wolves - what an unexpected way to go.

This is all a stunt to get people to buy Ned's music.

libcrypt, Thursday, 19 July 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

I like how the thread title was changed so people wouldn't fret, worry, or needlessly hang themselves after hearing the (false) news.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 19 July 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

He would have made a splendid Unicron.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 19 July 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

i've just gone through and re-watched the first 5 seasons of 'homicide' and yeah, i'm super sad to hear of his death.

awesome actor, such restrained range...

Mike McGooney-gal, Friday, 20 July 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

The title should have been changed to The fake rip Ned Beatty 1937-2007.

libcrypt, Friday, 20 July 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

ethan's really upset about the michael vick thing, i guess.

hstencil, Friday, 20 July 2007 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe we should just take this opportunity to say our RIPs, saving us valuable time when Ned Beatty actually dies.

(My favorite thing about this is that Ethan was FOILED BY MATH)

nabisco, Friday, 20 July 2007 00:42 (eighteen years ago)

That rape scene really will be the first thing the obituary writers will mention. Hopefully, it won't be depicted on his tombstone.

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 20 July 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

thank fuck

Tracer Hand, Friday, 20 July 2007 11:34 (eighteen years ago)

Aimless, Saturday, 21 July 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

Avuncular, then?

Aimless, Saturday, 21 July 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

He's a guy for whom the adjective "avuncular" was devised.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 21 July 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

his character in The Shooter is really lame and underwritten. that whole movie was a disappointing waste of talent, though.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 21 July 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

not entirely dissimilar to this thread, then
