Everybody's favourite comic book uncle or credit-hogging huckster?

Andrew L, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Every field needs one. The blatent self promoter who manages to enliven the whole scene by their mere presence (is he comics Don King?) Artistically he is pretty bankrupt - was always the weakest link in any of the books he was involved in.

Pete, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

His cameo appearence in Mallrats was brilliant.

The man is a genius. As far I'm concerned, beyond classic.

he is classic. his early comics where he just throws out bonkers idea after bonkers idea are complete genius.

DV, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

B-but they're all Jack Kirby or Steve Ditko's ideas and characters!! Lee just wrote the dialogue after the artwork had been drawn! What did Lee create after Kirby left Marvel in 1970? (Ans: fuck all!) Don't believe the hype etc. etc.

Andrew L, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I got to interview him a few weeks ago. He's REALLY charismatic & pleasant--I can see why Kirby, Ditko, Romita, etc. spent so many years working with him. He was also very careful to give all the artists lots of credit. (He noted, for instance, that after he & Ditko had been doing Spider-Man for a few years, he'd stopped giving Ditko any kind of guidance, story-wise: Ditko would just turn in 20 pages of whatever he felt like drawing, and then Stan would write the dialogue.)

following a bizzarre series of events involving bruce forsyth (don't ask), stan lee was, at one point, going to come to borders in oxford to do a signing/talk thing, but it seems to have fallen off the radar. i shall investigate, see if it's still happening or not.

Was his name a real name?

Or merely a pun on "Stanley"?

PhilK, Sunday, 9 December 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

Stanley Lee sounds odd. Kind of like a verbal stumble.

With Lee and Ditko both gone this year, these are the only people I know of who contributed to Marvel Comics in the 1960s and are still alive:

Joe Sinnott
Larry Leiber
Roy Thomas
Denny O'Neil
John Romita
Sal Buscema
Jim Steranko
Neal Adams
Tom Palmer

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 09:11 (seven years ago)

Marie died two months ago, too

Larry Leiber

my local paper growing up credited strip authors for years and years after they were dead. wonder how long the ghosts stay hidden on Spider-Man?

Sing The Mighty Beat (sic), Wednesday, 14 November 2018 09:35 (seven years ago)

I was wondering about that too - I'm guessing they have a stockpile of 'Stan Lee' Spidey dailys still to run, but it would be weird if they carried on crediting Lee forever afterwards (tho not unprecedented). I have no idea how popular or otherwise the Spidey strip is, but as it's been going for 40 plus years (and is one of the few remaining non-funny newspaper strips) I suppose it's successful enough not to just cancel it.

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 09:41 (seven years ago)

And yes, Marie Severin too - I was never a fan of her artwork, which maybe accounts for my oversight, but she's obviously a significant figure in the Marvel story. I guess it's good that most of the main Marvel players did at least live long enough to give some fairly in-depth interviews, Ditko obviously excluded (and also Tom Palmer, who was very young when he started working for Marvel in the 1960s, and seems extremely reticent when it comes to interviews and so on).

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 09:48 (seven years ago)

One wonders whether Roy even has a contract with the syndicate, vs one with Stan.

Sing The Mighty Beat (sic), Wednesday, 14 November 2018 14:15 (seven years ago)

You've probably seen on the interweb those very recent photos of Roy visiting Stan one last time (apparently they're the last ever photos taken of Lee) - Funky Flashman and Houseroy, together 4ever.

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 14:28 (seven years ago)

I hadn’t, but googling brought up Roy breaking kayfabe (and sounds like he has been contracted directly for some years now, without even the nominal figleaf of telling Stan about the stories)

His Bullpen Bulletins are where his true legacy lies, imo. I believe a compilation of them was printed at some point.

This is the Viet Nam issue of Daredevil that I think Thus Sang Freud is talking about - beautiful Gene Colan and George Klein artwork, Stan at his bleeding heart best:

http://www.idoc.co/read/64280/-daredevil-47-brother-take-my-hand/1

Pretty sure the Bullpen Bulletins were also ghostwritten after the 60s.

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 15:28 (seven years ago)

I believe a compilation of them was printed at some point.

about ten years ago Marvel did a collection of Stan's Soapbox columns, benefiting the Hero Initiative, so that a couple of artists whom Stan had denied fifty years of royalties could afford one doctor's visit

Sing The Mighty Beat (sic), Wednesday, 14 November 2018 16:31 (seven years ago)

Might be a case of 'too soon', but I'm surprised I haven't seen more of this quote from the great Bernard Kristein on Stan Lee... from 1965:

"I was delighted to learn that Lee has attained the status of an authority in the comics field. Twenty years of unrelenting editorial effort to suppress the artistic effort, encourage miserable taste, flood the field with degraded imitations and polluted non-stories, treating artists and writers like cattle, and failure on his part to make an independent success as a cartoonist have certainly qualified him for this respected position."

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 16:39 (seven years ago)

Might be a case of 'too soon'

nah

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 16:45 (seven years ago)

Sing The Mighty Beat (sic), Wednesday, 14 November 2018 16:47 (seven years ago)

I'm unaware of when Krigstein and Lee may have crossed paths?

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 16:54 (seven years ago)

Glad to see that even death is no bulwark against the unbridled vitriol we all feel for the Pol Pot of comicsdom.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 16:54 (seven years ago)

Krigstein did a lot of work for Atlas in the 1950s, he was definitely speaking from bitter experience.

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 16:56 (seven years ago)

I can’t deny Lee’s dark side - but imagine receiving this letter:

My proudest moment! Stan Lee writing to Marvel UK with words of praise for the first issue of Death's Head. Nuff said! pic.twitter.com/origCdv0pw

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 17:11 (seven years ago)

honestly surprised and pleased to see that, the first indication I've ever come across that Stan ever read a comic book after moving to California

Sing The Mighty Beat (sic), Wednesday, 14 November 2018 17:34 (seven years ago)

Friend of mine saw Stan pay a royal visit to the Marvel UK offices at about the time of that letter. Apparently Stan was very impressed by Judge Dredd, and wanted to know why Marvel UK weren't it.

This, btw, is an (extreme) example of the kind of manic sub-divisioning that Krigstein was doing to Stan's rudimentary scripts (or more likely, plot outlines, as per 'the Marvel Method') at Atlas - 75 panels for a four-page story, obviously knocked out at great speed, but so full of energy - looks very modern, to me, still

Thus Sang Freud, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 22:02 (seven years ago)

I got that page from the Lambiek website. Krigstein definitely applied zipatone to many of his EC stories, which were all printed in colour of course, so I wouldn't be surprised if the tinting was on the original art (long since lost, I would guess)
