Oh screw you. There's no way I can pick from those two.

Ms Misery, Friday, 20 July 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

Why these two only?

Tuomas, Friday, 20 July 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

because it's a FACE OFF that's why

elmo argonaut, Friday, 20 July 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

Of these two, hdm is "better." Though hp is more cozy, which can sometimes be nice. I would have liked to voter for earthsea though.

askance johnson, Friday, 20 July 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

These are my most favorite book series ever. They are each great in their own way and choosing between them would be like having to choose one child over another.

Ms Misery, Friday, 20 July 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

HDM for the smackdown on Christianity, or churches, or orthodoxy, or however you want to describe it.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 20 July 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

The Harry Potter books have been consistently mediocre with isolated flashes of brilliance. The Dark Materials books started out intriguing and went downhill at a rate that illustrates "diminishing returns." Hard to choose, really.

j.lu, Friday, 20 July 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

Can't vote since I've never read a word of either, but from what I understand, HDM has some brains and a lot of balls.

kenan, Friday, 20 July 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

dark is rising, phule

sexyDancer, Friday, 20 July 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

jessie monster, Friday, 20 July 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

HDM is one good novel followed by two crap novels.

Alex in SF, Friday, 20 July 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

Whereas HP is two decent novels followed by two good novels followed by two just get on with already novels followed by I'll find out tonight.

Alex in SF, Friday, 20 July 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

"Dark is rising" is good (except for the silly goddess of the sea bit in Greenwitch)

Heave Ho, Friday, 20 July 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

earthsea otm, shit rules, i could read another 100+ novels in that universe, dragonlance stylee

gff, Friday, 20 July 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

In literature terms HDM is a million miles in front. In creating comforting, addictive worlds you want to be part of, HP does a good job. The writing's still shit, though.

Mark C, Friday, 20 July 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

waht about Xanth??

The Macallan 18 Year, Friday, 20 July 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

Oh god that's the only series on this thread I've actually read.

Got a copy of HDM one tho.

Abbott, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

My daughter's a big nut for Diane Duane's "Young Wizards" series. I gotta say, the two that I read were really good.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:41 (eighteen years ago)

Alex in SF otm, the last two HDM novels are really weak.

Any Diana Wynne Jones fans in the house? Cooper, Le Guin, Alexander, Lofting, Tolkien and Lewis were dear friends growing up, but my greatest love was DWJ. Charmed Life, The Lives of Christopher Chant, Homeward Bounders, The Magicians of Caprona and certainly The Power of Three. Marvels! I'm so glad they're mostly back in print due to kids-who-hunger-for-fantasy.

i liked it when i was young -- especially the bit about about mining memories trapped in isinglass, but on a reread last year i found much of it a bit shitty

remy bean, Monday, 23 July 2007 05:25 (eighteen years ago)

i re-read some years ago & it was even better than i remembered!
