Where at? I grew up in Stony Brook, then Cold Spring Harbor (near Huntington). I'm going to Cold Spring Harbor tonight for a party hosted by a girlfriend - gonna see all the old peeps, so excited. And her parents are away! So high school.
Anyway, I love the Island - I loved Stony Brook and Cold Spring Harbor. I know there's a Defend The Indefensible thread, but I want a new one, chock full o' personal experiences. Thanks.

I grew up at the other end of Nichols Road from Stony Brook. LI is an ok place to grow up - the beaches are great, Fire Island is amazing, and NYC is so close. That said, when I go visit my parents now I'm bored to tears. I haven't kept in touch with anyone from high school though, I guess that could be why. Cold Spring Harbor is beautiful. Have fun at the house party.

Geographically, yes; psychological and socially, nuh-uh.
― Michael Daddino, Sunday, 22 July 2007 01:43 (eighteen years ago)
Grew up in North Bellmore, heart of darkest suburbia, next door to Levittown. Loved the many things that people typically find banal about it (tree-lines streets with split-level ranch homes, malls) and found beauty in its corrupted natural landscapes. This may be 70's nostalgia talkin' but most of Nassau and a lot of Suffolk are now far too overdeveloped to be very useful or interesting places to live anymore,. The McMansions and tracts of squooshed-together housing without front lawns and the strip-malls and the mall-malls are the fucking plague only a rise in the ocean level or worldwide energy shortage can possibly get rid of them now.
I went to Mepham High back in the eighties, home to a football team with an unseemly hazing/male-rape incident in its recent past.

― cutty, Sunday, 22 July 2007 02:01 (eighteen years ago)
Fucking Cold Spring Harbor, I thought its itsy-bitsy shopping district -- the uh more tree-lined one, not the one surrounding the main town drag -- rocked so hard. Haven't been there in twenty years.
― Michael Daddino, Sunday, 22 July 2007 02:01 (eighteen years ago)
Surmounter - to answer your questions from earlier, I went to The Academy of St. Joseph in Brentwood for H.S. and now live in Boston.

On the other hand...a family member of mine, along with a few homeowners, helped prevent a black family from moving into our neighborhood in some way that has never been fully explained to me. (I only found out about years after the fact.) The joke was on him anyway: a family from India now lives in our house.
― Michael Daddino, Sunday, 22 July 2007 02:09 (eighteen years ago)
My family has lived on Long Island since 1640. I spent a lot of summers on the North Fork.
― tokyo rosemary, Sunday, 22 July 2007 02:28 (eighteen years ago)
that's a lot of summers!

― maura, Sunday, 22 July 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)
xp michael, i just drove through that itsy bitsy shopping district for the first time in YEARS - my old house was a block up from that strip! such a beautiful area. so lush, i felt like i was living in a giant garden.
i just got back to brooklyn and somehow the trees here don't look as nice. i had such a good fucking time. nostalgia...
― Surmounter, Sunday, 22 July 2007 20:20 (eighteen years ago)
my mother grew up in rockville centre (after spending her early years in jackson heights in queens). she went to high school there and then went to farmingdale university. that's as close as i get to long island. that and the fact that i have picked up some of her accent from her. which is kinda weird. she says hunk instead of honk. don't know if that's from queens or long island though.
― scott seward, Sunday, 22 July 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)
negative, but my sister lived in long beach for about a year in a tiny little house.
― Steve Shasta, Sunday, 22 July 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)
i forgot to mention that my grandmother grew up in cold spring harbor! don't know how that slipped my mind. that was like a hundred years ago though. she had an accent too, but it was more like the queen of england. i love the ancient pictures of her and her brother and sisters there. her uncle ran the state fish hatchery. he was very fishy looking.
― scott seward, Sunday, 22 July 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)
hahaha this was one of my dad's favorite fun facts, he'd wind up people from brooklyn & queens by telling em they were actually from L.I.
― m coleman, Sunday, 22 July 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)
ha! so neat scott
― Surmounter, Sunday, 22 July 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)
Dude, that Billy Joel picture is amazing. At my prom everyone broke into a chorus to Scenes From an Itlaian Restaurant. No joke. It was pretty Long Island. Also, I love that duck.

Thanks Facebook - I'm so proud!
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/expatrica/guido3_profilejpg.jpgYou are totally Long Island! You have lived here all your life and never want to leave. You hate upstate NY, NJ, and pretty much all the other states. You probably have a fake tan and if you're a guy, a blow out.
PS - I left, never want to go back, have no real problems with either upstate NY or NJ and I do not have a fake tan.

Hmm, I lived in Stony brook for 9th grade and part of 10th. One of the worst years of my life.
― Dr. Johnson (askance johnson), Friday, 22 May 2009 04:28 (sixteen years ago)
under this definition, i have lived on long island. under the common definition, no, but i've spent a lot of time out there.
my dream house is grey gardens as it was in the '70s (although i hate the hamptons). dilapidated manse, crazy overgrowth, and lots of cats.
― elliot easton ellis (get bent), Friday, 22 May 2009 05:19 (sixteen years ago)
Ok but you mean like after they cleaned it up not when it was disgusting, right?
I actually sought out and drove by Grey Gardens on Mothers' Day since we were having lunch out that way anyway. The house looks very much the same and there is still crazy overgrowth. So much so that I couldn't really get any pictures because the house is a bit hard to see through it all.
― TAT THY SAD EAGLE (ENBB), Friday, 22 May 2009 05:23 (sixteen years ago)
the 1975 grey gardens, not the 1971 grey gardens. :-)
the current grey gardens is yellow, ffs.
― elliot easton ellis (get bent), Friday, 22 May 2009 05:28 (sixteen years ago)
oh wait shit don't tell me I drove all the way out there and saw the wrong house. I was sure that was it but I don't think it was yellow. :-(

I grew up in Southern California, but spent most of my summers with my grandparents, who lived in Plainview. I have a cousin my age who lived in Merrick, and we would spend most of our time mocking/trying to correct each other's accents. It never got old.
― naus, Saturday, 23 May 2009 02:36 (sixteen years ago)
JBR - Ok, I do think that's the one we saw. At least I'm just going to keep telling myself that because otherwise it would be too sad ;-).
― TAT THY SAD EAGLE (ENBB), Saturday, 23 May 2009 02:58 (sixteen years ago)
So my parents moved off the island 2.5 years ago and I am going back next weekend for the first time to visit a friend and I'm surprised by how excited I am. Also going to fire island for one day/night. Can't fucking wait. Pizza! Bagels! Fire Island!
