crazy town

Don't get me wrong, I'm as intrigued and awed by the insane as the next guy (and I'm probably not the mental health poster boy by myself) but ILE is starting to be more nuts than not nuts. It's all rambling disjointed messages that make sense only to their authors (if that), paranoid conspiracy theories, poopoo caca scatalogical fixations, threats and cuss-outs. Jesus, if I wanted to hear crazy people yelling about nothing I could just spend more time on public transit. Or read some blogs.

Was it always like this and I'm just more aware of it now?

Is this "fun"? Group therapy? What?

fritz, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hey, DG, delete this please. It'll only make things worse.

fritz, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think there are peaks and troughs with it, like with anything. i think its got so big and unwieldy now, there are so many threads that any ones you find nasty or uninteresting for whatever reason, you can easily avoid. there are plenty of threads to please everyone, and they're often very different in tone.

gareth, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, it's all gone a bit potso. But the Duran and White Goods threads aren't. Oh, hang on. They probably fail the 'about nothing' test.

N., Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What it is is FANTASTIC!!!!

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Marcello, there's this thing called other people..

N., Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There are, Dastoor - all the other people who aren't posting but who are reading the two threads in question, which provide more excitement, blood, sex and HUMANITY than anything else on the boards at present, including the now somewhat stale Jay-Z/Nas one.

Anyone wanting to raise a number of key points which have been hitherto inexplicably left out of the debate and who wish to remind us what people tend to forget at the end of the day know where to go.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fritz I don't often agree with you but it seems to have peaked today. Then again, it's had the bonus of making me think "right screw the interweb, I'll do some wurk"...

Sarah, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

quick, create a diversion!

duane, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

excitement, blood, sex and HUMANITY

Or, 'Marcello gets over excited, everyone else sighs and thinks, oh no, not again'...

Sarah, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

PISS FIGHT!

duane, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Story of my bleedin' life, Sarah :(

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm only posting on the fun threads. the others are really. really. really. depressing.

katie, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm sorry to say that Sarah is quite right. i am getting a lot done at work. worst luck

Alan T, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Come my lady, come come moi laydee.

Sarah, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It'll take more than that to turn this into a fun thread.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

often threads do polarise as either really heavy, full of sincere and empassioned posts, and complete nonsense.

But today and yesterday do seem a bit lacking in daisies I must say. Maybe there's not enough stuff out there to love.

misterjones, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I do believe that the lad MacDonald might be on to something here.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Could you calm down Marcello, please? You think it's good fun but no- one else seems to. I can't help but feel you're doing this cos you know that Tom and me can't ban you or bulk delete your posts without fucking up the board.

DG, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeh, but Deeg, marcello is only posting what he feels is right, and thats no different to anyone else here is it? you don't have to be on the angry threads (and there aren't really that many of them anyway are there?)

gareth, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ladies come and ladies go in my revolving door. Some never come back but MOST COME BACK FOR MORE!

N., Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But he's losing it all over the place, Gareth. I'm not gonna delete anything, I said I won't ages ago and I'll stick to that.

DG, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth, he says it's 'sport', it's a 'laugh' and then acts extremely obnoxiously! And I've actually met Marcello but was at the other end of the table to him, he's not just 'a random mentalist' to me now - he's rapidly becoming someone who I think is mean or self delusional and needs help! Can you see why people are getting more worked up about this now?

Sarah, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes sarah, but it is not for me to judge. i am more interested in Judy Garland and Charles Mingus at the moment

gareth, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What, together? You naughty boy.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

guess you'll be wanting that dvd back now ned eh?;)

gareth, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah Fritz is otm. I'm not saying "hey talk about something fun", but I actually lurked for the most of today and in the end didn't bother posting anything.

Ronan, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

shut up, everyone.

chippy, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes but on the plus side we found out how to shut ronan up for the day

blimey it's hard work though but

(ok i lurked too but that was because someone at the office had a baby and we bought cake)

mark s, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what kind of cake?

chaki, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

m&s tempting TOFFEE cake, though actually it was mainly one million varieties of chocolate with cum-dollops of toffee squirtled on top: it was like "hullo mr coronary, we meet at last"

mark s, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yummy. i love office cake.

chaki, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought he said cake boat.

DV, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd also shut up if you give me cake.

Ronan, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

four months pass...
I've ended up on this site after looking for a recipe for Toffee cake!!?? i was after an English recipe but all i could find were American ones (i can't understand the measurements!) anyway i have probably missed the boat but couldn't leave without saying, i'll make your legs shake, you make me go crazy.

Claire Hayday, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh though Claire, you can get cup and half cup measures and all that from kitchen shops! i'm definitely gonna invest in some as i seem to come across a lot of tastylooking american cake recipes... cant help you with the toffee cake i'm afraid but good luck!

katie, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cup = generic measurement! It could be like 1 cup = 50 g therefore 2 cups = 100g - it's just a way of scaling things up and down and getting the proportions right. It's quite easy but you gotta do the maffs! My measuring jugs have 'cup' measurements on them, one cup = just under half a pint if I recall correctly.

Sarah, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cup is measure of volume NOT mass, so conversion from cups into proportional grammes will break your cake.

RickyT, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and then there is the egg problem

RickyT, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there is *always* the egg problem.

katie, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eggs are inherently problematic

RickyT, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

BAH!!!! Well I will have you know that I made a very very nice curry last night using those style of measurements so THERE!

Maybe you haf a point about cakes though. Although I still think as a rough guide it is quite good - stop being a rockist recipe follower!! That is wot one of the Fat Ladies said in the Observer food thing on Sunday hooray cheers cheers RAR for the 'just throw it in' cookery skool! Observers now may wish to point out that RickyT is perhaps a better cook than me. BAH! I am going to bake cookies tonight!! Who in London wants to come help?

Sarah, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or I may just go to sleep.

Sarah, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am no recipe rockist when it comes to non-baking stuff, it's just that cakes and the like are dead sensitive to proportions and flour's about half the density of margerine or butter. So using cup -> weight conversions would give you a very floury (and hence ubergrim) cake indeed.

RickyT, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Saying that recipes are bad and you should do it all by eye is fine if you know how to cook something already. The point of a recipe is it is something you haven't cooked before. Thus saying this is the preserve of a pro cook - or someone who wants you - tha punta - to be a lousy cook so you go to their restaurants.

Pete, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

b-b-but Ptee i make up stuff ALL THE TIME without recipes! and it is usually tasty stuff!

katie, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

B-b-but Ktee, if I wanted to make what you had made you would have to tell me how to make it which would involve a recipe for me to accurately duplicate your experiment. I am not anti-experiments, it is just probably easier to make a chocolate cake from a recipe than from first principles.

Pete, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

arr chocolate cakey yes. but fer yer average stew/curry/pasta sauce you just need a pan and a load of stuff you like. my "recipes" always go like "you need some potatoes, just cut them up however you want them" or "add some curry powder, chili too if you like it" and stuff. it's more a one-method-covers-all than a RECIPE per se though. Aubrey wanted to know how to make my Wonderful Chick Pea Thing and i showed him and he WROTE IT ALL DOWN! and it looked WRONG! making the Wonderful Chick Pea Thing is purely a matter of common sense.

katie, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

anyway i had to make cakes at a friend's house recently and he didn't have any scales and i made it up (ie. put what looked OK-ish in) and it was FINE. so there!

katie, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait! Claire, come back - here is a recipe English Toffee cake

You're my butterfly
Sugar, baby!

(Best google ever?)
Oh and Katie? Can you email me instructions for "Wonderful Chick Pea thing" without resorting to anything resembling a recipe? Ta!
