Reducing.

One of the easiest ways to reduce your footprint is to stop drinking bottled water, if you do already.

Why stop at box turtles? Who would you marry if you could marry anything?

apparently about 1/3 of waste is paper and paperboard. That made me think that maybe I should pile up the cardboard at work where there is space and find a place to sell it per ton or whatever instead of "throwing it away" in a recycle box . (H.U.S.T.L.E.R - How U Survive This Life Everyday, Resourcefully). Anyway I think I do ok there, we reuse allright but to reduce some of it one thing that comes to mind is to install a fax software to avoid printing useless advertisements.

I don't recycle enough yard and kitchen waste (another 1/3 of people's waste) . The compost box being hard to access during the winter probably is the main reason why.

where do you all get your information on sustainable, equitable good quality products that will last?

Sébastien, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 06:40 (eighteen years ago)

I just did a massive long thread on recycling...

Obviously I need to work on reducing more. I already reuse most things that I can. I just need to work on weaning myself off those plastic containers that EVERYTHING from fruit to brownies come in, in supermarkets.

(Yeah, and don't lecture me on how bad supermarkets are. I love supermarkets. You can pry them from my cold, dead hands when the endtimes come.)

apparently Hackney council don't recycle paper that's had direct contact with food? I find this ridiculous but perhaps it makes sense. but the pizza boxes kep building up.

I've been re-using the same brown paper bag when I go out to get lunch (to eat back at my desk). i don't notice anyone else doing this. i could just use my satchel (it's too big to be a manbag) anyway. they should try and encourage people to re-use the bags they hand out so readily - printing a message on the bag itself perhaps.

on a different note my 'buy fairtrade chocolate only' experiment is going far better than expected.

I heard about composting with worms , sounds like a good way to be able to do some composting during winter time. "More and more people are learning to appreciate worms thanks to their remarkable ability to recycle (i.e., gobble up) apple cores, banana peels, and coffee grounds, and transform these and other organic materials into sweet-smelling humus or compost -- indoors!"
I will use 7 compost boxes in the garage , one for each day of the week so I will give them time to do their thing.

I am always annoyed by the amount of wrapping the Japanese shops use. It's just over the top. I understand they want to give a lot of service to their (demanding) clients, but at the end of the day it just means a lot of waste. I'm all for using less. REcycling is important, but you've got to solve the problem at the start.

it's here, sébastien - Do You Recycle?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 09:29 (eighteen years ago)

thank you t.h. . I just skim read it for now and hey there is worm composting talk over there :)

nathalie, you are right about wrapping . There should be public service announcements and possibly rules to change the popular perception that an unwrapped (or minimally wrapped) product have less value.
