A question of biology

So, I don't entirely know what i'm asking but i'm hoping the collective widom of ILX can figure it out and hence provide the answer:

What is it called when someone is born having effectively consumed their twin, with a collective deposit of hair and teeth and Vitamin K stuff attached to them?

I know to most of you this doesn't sound like a real thing but I'm pretty sure it does happen from time to time I just can't remember what it's called.

dermoid cyst?

ENBB, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

Definitely a real thing, but I can't recall the name.

BTW - a dermoid cyst is a tumor that typically contains tissues including hair, teeth, bone etc. Is that what you mean? I'm not sure it always has to come from a twin though.

ENBB, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

I think ENBB has it. that was awesomely quick. I salute you.

Sound exactly right.

Man, tubgirl or whatevs don't really phase me compared to photos I've seen of dermoid cysts. *shuddershuddershudder*

Yeah, I was just going to say DO NOT gis this unless you're into weird medical shit like I am which is why I know the name of these things in the first place.

ENBB, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

Most specifically, ovarian tertratomas. GLAHHHH

Oh, I was gonna say

but maybe not.

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, they're not that bad. I was expecting much worse. Maybe that's what's growing in my wrist, ha ha.

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

I think a dermoid cyst looks like a regualr cyst but when opened contains hair, teeth etc. A parasitic twin is more extreme where someone has an extra head, or arm or something that once belonged to a twin.

Look what I just found: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/4848164.stm

I should have gone to medical school.

ENBB, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

From googling, it looks like dermoid cysts aren't necessarily twins, but actual eggs in the ovary which decide to go ahead and develop despite not being fertilised - and turn into gooey bags and skin and bone and teeth and things. There was a cool Margaret Atwood short story about one.

I have to admit I find this kind of thing fascinating, too, ENBB. Not even in a gross out way, but more in a "wow, human biology, it is SO STRANGE" way.

Awww poor two head girl. :(

Exactly. I think it's amazing.

I know, I feel so bad for that little one! But again, it's so incredible to me that that can even happen in the first place.

Also search "Fetus In Fetu", which I believe is the condition the recently famous pregnant Indian man had.

fascinating stuff

Uptoeleven, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

It is fascinating and incredible. I love learning about stuff like this but somehow, just that one thing, imagining my ovaries full of glommed up hair and teeth, that was mad worrisome to me.

Abbott, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

I got a good look at the half-developed twin removed from that one big-bellied Indian guy, and it was so traumatizing that I wound up writing something about it later, and the way the character in question described it was the best way I have to describe it, which is:

it looked like a bucket of fried chicken with a toupee on top
