It's really hard not to sign it "XOXO, K" as I do in personal emails. But I think that would generate misunderstandings!

Klaus M. Flanger, Thursday, 26 July 2007 11:01 (eighteen years ago)

"go fuck yourself, san diego!"

the sir weeze, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

Warm greetings, Sincerely Yours,... Shit like that. Depends on whom I'm emailing. I know "warm greetings" may seem a bit too chummy or whatever, but *shrug* I run a jewellery shop and tend to get emails from women... I don't think they really mind. One just emailed me her entire life. Straaaaange.

nathalie, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

Irish people: do you regularly sign things 'all the best'? I've noticed this one.

suzy, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

Begob and to be sure I do that as well, despite ever having been to the Glorious Emerald Isle only the once. Is that so? Yes.

Sarah, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:39 (eighteen years ago)

Hahahaha. You and a ton of Irish people then, but it is a nicer kind of signoff. I worked for a woman who had a complex signoff system code in place so that if she went apeshit at someone their 'best wishes' headed south to 'yours sincerely'.

suzy, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:46 (eighteen years ago)

ja nath 'warm greetings' sounds a lot like 'best regards' which i am often tempted to use but seems a little to familiar. i usually go with 'sincerely yours'. i like best regards though because then in replies you can be superdouchey and say things like 'best'.

tehresa, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:49 (eighteen years ago)

Suzy: Yes. Only for people I know though and definitely not to non-native english speakers! "All the best? All the best what?"

kv_nol, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

I just put "Regards".

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

Tehresa, here I find the removal of the 'best' from 'regards' to be a better enabler of douchiness.

suzy, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:54 (eighteen years ago)

No offense, CP - people who stick with 'regards' whatever the person are neutral in a good way.

suzy, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:54 (eighteen years ago)

Oh dear.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

-- thanks

gff, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:58 (eighteen years ago)

Email can fly back and forth so much, fuck a sign-off.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

Unless it's "your obedient servant."

Beth Parker, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha I worry about erring on the side of obsequious in correspondence w/editors but I haven't sunk to "your obedient servant" not yet anyway.

m coleman, Thursday, 26 July 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

"Je vous prie d'agreer, monsieur, l'expression de mes sentiments les plus distingues"

Is that right? It's been 15 years since I gave up French.

Mark C, Thursday, 26 July 2007 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

but when I finish this current piece I may just submit w/this:

"nigga i done did it"

m coleman, Thursday, 26 July 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

yes personal emails I don't really sign off unless it's to my boy or family then it's just "xo"

At work, it's just "-S"

Ms Misery, Thursday, 26 July 2007 13:13 (eighteen years ago)

I tend to go with 'many thanks' although I'll only hand my email out to customers under extreme duress and try to direct them to the general enquiries address for my government agency.

leigh, Thursday, 26 July 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

I alternate between these three most of the time. ranked in order from neutrality to some small degree of familiarity

thanks
best
regards

I don't do "all the best" cause Pres GHW Bush used to sign off that way cf. his published letters titled All The Best, Geogre Bush. bleech.

m coleman, Thursday, 26 July 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

- "Thanks" if it's a coworker
- "Very truly yours" if it's a new outside contact
- "Best regards" if it's an established an outside contact

mike a, Thursday, 26 July 2007 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

"very truly yours"??? I'd find that completely OTT and sad!

Deliciously,

Just got offed, Thursday, 26 July 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

I don't sign off e-mail other than the 'signature' which contains my name and alternate means of contacting me. It's both a casual and expedient form of communication and I try to send my correspondents as little superfluous text as I wish to receive.

Michael White, Thursday, 26 July 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

Do you really work at a meat market, PP?

Ms Misery, Thursday, 26 July 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

Irish people: do you regularly sign things 'all the best'?

no, we say "expecting an early revert".

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 26 July 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

Is it only in Ireland that tards have started using "revert" to mean "reply"?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 26 July 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

If an email needs a signature, it's the very Californian, let's-cooperate-to-make-a-billion, "thanks".

libcrypt, Thursday, 26 July 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

I should start using "KTHXBYE", though.

libcrypt, Thursday, 26 July 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

"Thanks" is my usual. More casual, my first initial. One of the girls down the hall, sometimes a smiley face.

kenan, Thursday, 26 July 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

I’ve noticed a tendency for people to use “Thanks” as part of their sig line. Which can be really irritating in that, “We deleted all archived files without notifying you. Thanks, Dan IT Admin” way.

the higgs, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

Adam

admrl, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

Best,

("I am the" is implied.)

nabisco, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

great question. yeah, Best really should have been an option. i think there was a NYTimes article or something recently about how Is It Rude or Is IT Just Efficient? I definitely think the latter -just so easy.

"Thanks" irritates me. it could be a simple statement and someone will sign Thanks. Don't thank me unless I did something for you, thanks.

Surmounter, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

If you have any questions or comments don't hesitate to contact me.

Will

Also, I use thanks sometimes, but it's mostly when I am like "can you do this thing that needs doing" to a lackie of some sort so i think it's fair.

Will M., Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

right well that is fair.

well yeah the NAME ALONE thing is great - actually that's what i do for internal emails. First initial or my full name.

But with customers, Best works well.

Surmounter, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

The "revert" thing has been appearing in emails from Chinese factory people. "When we have tested the new tooling, we will revert to you".

lol REVERT? very bizarre

Surmounter, Thursday, 26 July 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

i rly think if i read revert i would not be able to help cracking up

Surmounter, Thursday, 26 July 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

I write "Best Wishes" and it makes me cringe every time. But I was told that Yours Sincerely/Faithfully was inappropriate for email and anything else seems too pally.

Cathy, Thursday, 26 July 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

i just feel like WISHING anything in a work email is like a little personal. i mean all i WISH is that we can get our work done with as little hassle as possible...

Surmounter, Thursday, 26 July 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

i use thanks when i am sending 'bitch don't u fuck this up again, listen to what i'm saying' e-mails. totally sarcastic/fuck you "thanks".

tehresa, Thursday, 26 July 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

lol right. that's when the Thanks is appropriate

Surmounter, Thursday, 26 July 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

I am guilty of using "thanks" for everything. It could be an implied thanks for putting up with me, thanks in advance for not e-mailing me again, etc.

Jordan, Thursday, 26 July 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

I say "thanks ('gracias,' for our friends south of the border),"

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 26 July 2007 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

Is it only in Ireland that tards have started using "revert" to mean "reply"?

no

gabbneb, Thursday, 26 July 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

I use thanks because I feel like to just start up saying "regards" would seem robotic and weird. I've been saying "thanks" all this time because I couldn't think of anything better, except the occasional —D or D, but this is reserved for people I email all the time. It would be stupid to say thanks to them 500x per week.

Like, when you go shopping the cashier might be a total prick and the exchange is an angry one, but when the change hits my hand, both parties usually say "thanks" without meaning it in the least.

dean ge, Thursday, 26 July 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

"thanks"
"sounds good"
"makes sense to me"
"kortifw"
"hip to be square"
"always be closing"
"gotta make money, gotta get paid"
"go fuck yourself"

gabbneb, Thursday, 26 July 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

Mr. Que, Thursday, 26 July 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

Why don't we all create new obnoxious signature sign offs as if we all have our own talk shows?

dean ge, Thursday, 26 July 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

"And that's the way it is here in (place you work) at (time)(pm or am) on this (day), (month) (year). As always, thanks for your attention, your consideration, your patience and your candor. Until next time, enjoy the time between then and now. Be happy, be safe and be kind to others, if you wouldn't mind. And, have a good day, won't you? THANKS."

dean ge, Thursday, 26 July 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

Jon Lewis, Thursday, 26 July 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

i live in london now so it's "cheers," or "my best," every single time. no exceptions. "cheers" seems wrong if there's no element of thanks involved though.

i think "regards" sounds too distant.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 26 July 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

"Stop snitchin'

No, for internal stuff usually no sig or "Thanks." For external, "Best regards" or "Thank you" as the situation merits.

Nearly all my UK colleagues use "Cheers."

Phil D., Thursday, 26 July 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

yeah cheers is pretty great

"Cheers" for people I know in person (Tracer, "cheers" seems fine to me if there is no element of thanks involved, it's like "cheerio" as well so generally can convey just a "right, that's it, I'm off now" sort of sentiment. I think. Maybe that's just a Scottish thing though?)

"Kind regards" for people I've spoken to on the phone before/am sucking up to/am not really pally enough with to use "cheers" but don't want to be ridiculously formal to

"Regards" for proper bigwiggy people I don't want to seem overly friendly towards
